A Magus' Journal: Mary as Virgin Vs. Mary as Young Maiden

The Gospel of the Nativity of Mary puts forward that when Mary married Joseph, she was a virgin, yes, but she was also young. More specifically, she had been at the temple for most of her life and thus had a spiritual innocence and purity that came not from her virginity, as often said, but rather from her faith and devotion. She was still remarkably human, and this is seen in her interactions with Christ. She mourns him, she loves and adores him. Even though she gave birth to the Christ Child, she sees him as no more different than anything else. He's a child with a bigger name. She still visited her sister, Elisabeth, who birthed St. John the Forerunner prior to the birth of Christ, and that already shows her humanity. She was not only the Mother of Gd, but a wife and a woman of her family.

The concept of Purity is finnicky in gnosticism, going between the world is impure to some other aspects. Regardless, one aspect of the Pleroma is called 'Incorruptibility', which shows the stainless nature of the Divine. In the gnostic view, this is developed in the self by remaining virtuous despite the issues around you, you dissolve the world but are not dissolved yourself. You become 'Incorruptible'. So, I would honestly say that Mary was pure not by her flesh, but by her nature, her spirit as the Mother of Faithful Souls.

Likewise, I consider the Spirit of Mary to be that of Sophia/Zoe. She is Life. This can be somewhat established by the Nativity where she is said to have spoken to Angels but also how gnosticism sometimes refers to a 'Virginal Spirit' (or a spirit that is not moved or distorted) in the Court of Sabaoth. We're then left with a particular question, is Mary a Virgin by way of representing a perfect conception of a woman, meek and humble, or should we rather view her as a Virgin as being of a Pure Spirit and Mind.

Virginal in the way that, although she experiences the sufferings of the material world, she is not distorted nor tainted (deluded) but remains firm and resolute in herself.

Smithing Witchcraft: Bronze

Bronzes are a group of alloys who are made of copper and tin. Recipes vary, but on average, most alloys are roughly 80% copper and 20% tin. The resultant mixture is harder than either copper or tin alone.

Historically, bronze was the preferred metal in the making of bells and musical instruments needing a great timbre. As any metalsmith who has worked in bronze while crafting a bowl, vase, or other vessel can tell you, standing in the wrong spot while hammering can deafen an unsuspecting artisan.

Bronze also has a storied history as an art material, particularly in crafting statues and occasionally as an architectural element.

Much like brass, bronze has a storied history in naval construction.

Qualities of Bronze:

Bronzes, like many brasses, can bear considerable strength in conjunction with corrosion resistance in salt water. This is because bronze typically oxidizes only superficially, forming a layer of oxidation (usually copper carbonate), which protects the underlying layers of metal from attack.

Bronze conducts both thermal and electrical energy better than most steels, but less than copper or silver alone.

Bronzes, while being strong, are not a rigid as steels, though they do not fatigue as easily (meaning they are less likely to break or crack).

Bronze is nonmagnetic, though alloys containing ferromagnetic metals such as nickel or iron may still bear magnetic qualities.

Uses for bronze in witchcraft can include

Communication, particularly where tone, clarity of message, and ensuring that a message is heard are concerned

Beauty magic and (visual and auditory) glamours.

Protection from everyday elements and dangers.

Strength where grace and/or dignity is also needed.

To connect to the past or call on ancestral energy.

Smithing Witchcraft: Silver

Silver is an elemental metal in the same periodic group as copper and gold. It has the highest electrical and thermal conductivity of any metal and is also distinguished as the most reflective metal. Silver is also distinguished as one of the ‘noble metals’ meaning that it is highly resistant to corrosion in moist air (The others being gold, platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, osmium and iridium.)

Sterling silver, however, which is how most people encounter silver, is an alloy of 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. The copper adds strength to the metal and silver adds ductility and brilliance.

Applications of Silver:

Boosting magical energy

Warding illness

Protection by reflection of negative energies

Matters of wealth

The home, domesticity, and housekeeping

skill and craftsmanship

Beauty and glamours

Many also associate silver with offensive magic as well (as in the silver bullet used to kill a werewolf or to ward a vampire).

edit: Though I don’t operate using planetary systems or the moon in my practice, it goes to be said that silver is also strongly related to the moon and its magical energies.

Ways to use it:

Jewelry (already in your possession or newly made)

As colloidal silver (see warnings below)

As a coin (coins were still made of silver in the U.S. until 1964, and fine silver coins are still available as collectors items).

As a foil or leaf, painted onto other objects

As flatware or silverware

As a vase, bowl, or other hollowware item

Really, in any form that you find it. Just make sure it’s actually silver and not silver plate.

*Colloidal Silver has long been purported as a homeopathic cure-all when ingested. Modern science has proven this to be a fallacy. In fact, colloidal silver can cause cosmetic side effects such as argyria (bluing of the skin caused by the irreversible build up of silver in the body) or even allergic reactions and medication complications. In short, don’t ingest colloidal silver.

I had read about how teasels capture rainwater at the base of their sessile leaves and that the plant absorbs nutrients from insects that drown in the water. I hadn’t seen it in action, though, until I noticed new teasel growth at the Anacortes Ferry Terminal and saw the pools of water and decaying organic matter. Total Solar Eclipse: A regale of the Yayoi people, Amatsukami and Ama no Iwato

As the Total Solar Eclipse was a great event taking place across North America, I thought it would be the perfect time to write about the solar eclipse, and what it means in Shinto traditions - especially in regard to the famous Ama no Iwato myth. While it is unknown the true event associated with Ama no Iwato, it is said popularily it represents a solar eclipse – however when one studies further, a more significant connection would be to the Winter Solstice. However, indeed, solar eclipses would have most likely been significant as well, especially in relation to a recall of Ama no Iwato.

(Solar eclipse) The myth of Ama no Iwato is centered around the Amatsukami - Heavenly kami - originally worshiped by the Yayoi people. The era in which their culture flourished and was most active is traditionally dated about 300 BC to 300 AD, called the Yayoi era (Yayoi Jidai 弥生時代). It is from this time the Yayoi people and culture shared and practiced an early type of Amatsukami worship, the spiritual tales they told immortalized today in the Kojiki. While the Kojiki was written much later, in 712 AD, there is archaeological evidence and oral tradition that these myths are much older, dating to the Yayoi, who had no writing system. So, to understand fully about this spiritual story of Ama no Iwato, and the significance an eclipse would be to them, we must talk a bit about them first. The Yayoi people were the first to bring worship of Amatsukami to the land what we now call as Japan. An easiest example to show the connection, as pictured below, one can clearly see the connection even in the modern era – the architecture of Ise Kotaijinguu, Amaterasu Omikami’s primary shrine in the country, still retains the ancient architecture of the Yayoi people, and Yayoi settlements. (See below for comparison)

https://tapluan.wordpress.com/category/kien-truc/ (Aerial view of Ise Kotaijinguu - Naiku) The primary Amatsukami – Amaterasu Omikami (the Sun), Tsukuyomi no Mikoto (the Moon), and Susanoo no Mikoto (storms – as well as wind, ocean, and also connected to stars). Were and are considered the Three Precious Children (Mihashira no Uzu no Miko 三貴子).

The importance of the Sun, Moon, stars, rain, ocean, and wind – and their spirits/souls, the kami, played an important part of Yayoi worship. Amaterasu Omikami being the most important to them – as she was said to be the kami who gave them life, warmth, growth, and livelihood, as well giving leadership guidance to the Yayoi leaders ( considered royalty, and were also oracles/shamans), who were usually women as well.

http://image1.shopserve.jp/manai.co.jp/pic-labo/llimg/p_sankishi.jpg (Three precious children modern depiction) Now with all this in mind, many of the Yayoi’s traditions line up to the Kojiki stories of the Amatsukami. The Yayoi held the symbols of the mirror, sword, and magatama jewel in utmost respect as symbols of Amaterasu Omikami – a tradition still held today. Common Yayoi practices, such as divination using the shoulder bone of a deer (Futomani), silk weaving, rice farming, channeling the divine via dance (miko), and so on, can all be seen reflected in the myths – especially in the Ama no Iwato myth, all these elements appear. This is why, it is important to understand the background and context of the Yayoi, to catch the nuances and importance of this myth. I’ll retell an excerpt of Ama no Iwato below, with some parts cut out in order of relevance

Susanoo no Mikoto, having neglected his duties as a kami due to sadness over Izanami Okami’s death, was banished from Takamagahara (realm of the Heavenly kami, Amatsukami). Distraught, he went directly to Amaterasu Omikami’s palace, in order to (seemingly) seek guidance to his elder sister. (Story of the Divine Oath) . . However, while it seemed Susanoo no Mikoto had a good and pure heart, while he stayed in the palace, he committed very rude acts. In his anger and sadness, he decimated the sacred rice paddy, the farmland, and threw excrement all over the palace. The other Amatsukami were enraged and asked Amaterasu Omikami for an explanation. She tried to defend him, saying that he was suffering through a lot of difficult emotions, and the Amatsukami begrudgingly accepted her words. She spoke to Susanoo no Mikoto afterwards, and while it was quiet for a time, he seemed to have planned and even bigger transgression. In Amaterasu Omikami’s palace, her younger sister, Wakahirume no Mikoto, was the leader of the weaving maiden kamis. She is said to be a kami of the dawn, or dusk, as well as weaving, silk production, clothing making, and related aspects. (Enshrined at Ikuta Jinja in Kobe). As Wakahirume no Mikoto was weaving silk, Susanoo no Mikoto hid on the roof of the weaving palace. He held a skinned divine pony, and threw it harshly, crashing through the wooden/delicate roof, and landing on top of Wakahirume no Mikoto. The impact had her fall directly onto her loom with such force, that pieces of it pierced her pelvis, and she is said to have died right away. (However, later her spirit is said to have revived). The other weaving maidens, and now Amaterasu Omikami, who had rushed in hearing the screams and crashed, saw horrific things – a skinned divine pony (said to may have been Amaterasu Omikami’s own pony, which is why a white sacred horse is still presented to Naiku/Inner Shrine at Ise), ruined silk and looms (considered sacred to Amaterasu Omikami, and still offered to her at Ise Kotaijinguu), and most critically, seeing her younger sister dead. Completely numbed and in shock, she broke down and ran with adrenaline to a cave, which we now call as the sacred Ama no Iwato, and shut herself inside. Of course, with this, the light also disappeared, and the other Amatsukami were thrown into a panic. The weaving maidens quickly told them about the incident, and, after swiftly punishing Susanoo no Mikoto by pulling out his nails, cutting his hair and beard, and exiling him to the land of Kunitsukami, Izumo no Kuni, they began to work how to get her out of the cave. They consulted Omoikane no Mikoto, a kami of knowledge and wisdom, to see what to do. As they made camp by the Yasu River near Ama no Iwato, he came up with a plan to call sacred and pure energy so she would want to come out, and delegated tasks to the other Amatsukami. To Ame no Uzume no Mikoto, he suggested she do a divine dance, to call sacred energy. To Ame no Koyane, he suggested that he write a norito prayer To Ame no Futodama, he suggested to do the the Futomani divination with the shoulder bone of a deer (a sacred animal to Yayoi) to find out if the plan will be successful or not. To Ishikoridome no Mikoto, he suggested she make a large mirror (now known as Yata no Kagami) so she can see her own reflection To Tamanoya no Mikoto, he suggested they make many magatama (now known as Yasakani no magatama) to hang on the sakaki branch alongside the mirror.

Amaterasu Omikami is said to have been fond of magatama ever since the magatama necklace, Mikuratana no Kami, was given by her Father, Izanagi Okami, as a symbol to be the ruler of Takamagahara.

They also collected divine roosters, hoping their call would call her out (as roosters caw when the sun rises).

After Ame no Futodama confirmed the plan would succeed through divination, the kami began to implement everything. It seemed to be going well, but despite the chanting of norito, and Ame no Uzume preparing a divine dance, there still seemed to be no sign of it working. All the Amatsukami were nervous. Then, Ame no Uzume no Mikoto, the goddess of the sunrise, began to do something different. She overturned a washtub laying by the river, took sakaki and other branches and flowers in her hair and hands, and exposed her breasts. Instead of a solemn ritual to call down divine energy, she began to cheerfully and excitedly dance, and laugh, and make lots of noise stepping on the washtub and shaking the leaves. The Amatsukami, all suddenly shocked by her actions, couldn’t help but release from their tension in laughter. Once they began laughing, they couldn’t stop, and Ame no Uzume no Mikoto was encouraged and began to do more and more exciting things, making the Amatsukami more and more cheerful and laughing. At the same time, the roosters began to call, and Ame no Koyane began chanting the norito more loudly. Amaterasu Omikami, surprised at all the sounds and noises, was shocked out of her sadness and depression for a moment. She peeked a little from the cave, and called out, “What is happening?” and Ame no Uzume no Mikoto cheerfully replied, “There’s a new goddess here! And she’s way better than you!” Amaterasu Omikami, shocked and confused, peeked more, whereupon she saw her reflection in Yata no Kagami. While she was dazzled having never seen her reflection, her depression had come back, “Oh, it seems it’s true, she is much better”. In this moment of remorse however, was the Amatsukami’s chance. Omoikane no Mikoto called Ame no Tajikarao, the strongest of the Amatsukami, to quickly grab her out from the cave. As he did, Ame no Futodama quickly sealed the cave, said to be with shimenawa, so she could not enter again.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AmanoiwatoCave.jpg Thus, light was restored, and cheerfully the peace among the Amatsukami and Takamagahara was restored. (What happened to Susanoo no Mikoto? He has a happy ending too, but for next time!) From this myth, we can see important elements of Yayoi culture, such as rice paddies, farms, horses, silk weaving, and most importantly, life – all decimated. All these things would be considered very harsh transgressions against the head kami of the Yayoi people, and the people themselves. The traditional spiritual practices to commune with the kami at the time, such as Futomani, and divine dance, were credited to restoring peace, sunlight, and order. It can be gleaned that whenever transgressions against the kami happened, people reconnected to them via the leader’s and their court spiritual communication with the kami to restore peace and balance. The Ama no Iwato myth itself, as mentioned, is more associated with the Winter Solstice, especially if one considers the torii leading to Uji Bridge (Ujibashi) at Ise Kotaijinguu. This torii is the very first one that is seen before entering the sacred realm of the Inner shrine (Naiku). The way the torii is built aligns to the sun rising directly inside the torii on the Winter Solstice day. As Ise Kotaijinguu was founded by Yamatohime no Mikoto, from the Yayoi/Yamato Kingdom, and still retains Yayoi traditions throughout thousands of years, there is a connection the Winter Solstice time was a more significant event to the Yayoi (longest night of the year). However, despite this, the time of solar eclipses relates to this myth as well albeit in a more abstract manner.  The Yayoi most likely also made the connection between Ama no Iwato, the Winter solstice, and eclipses – all times when the sun’s light is less, or in the case of an eclipse, slowly taken away and completely blotted out for a few minutes. Remembering that Ama no Iwato happened due to severe transgressions - even by the divine - private rituals by the leaders, public ceremonies with the people, and extra food offerings were most likely done in order to keep the sun’s light shining – to keep balance, peace, and harmony among their deities and their people.

While Ama no Iwato itself may not have been an eclipse story – the eclipse would have certainly reminded them of the myth, and to be humble and continue a proper way of living. It would have had a strong impact on them, just as it still does on us as humanity as a whole, even after thousands of years and scientific knowledge, we are still in awe at the power of great nature, and the power of the sun.

Hi, i was wondering, would you consider it "impure" to work with shinigami and death spirits as a shintoist? Im a shinto beginner and very interested in working with them. Thank you and have a nice week!

Hi there!Well, firstly, Shinto is a way of living moreso than a religion. One of the cores of Shinto is to live with oharae, or purification, or keeping the balance between purity (oharae) and impurity (kegare). It’s important to remember purity doesn’t mean “good, clean”, and impurity is “bad, dirty”. Think of them like positive/negative emotions/feelings/energy. Positive energy (Purity, Oharae) makes us feel “cleaner, energetic, happy”. - it’s “pure” because in Shinto thinking, our spirits naturally at birth are very positive, innocent, joyful (nigimitama, kushimitama, sakimitama). When this naturally clear spirit is clouded by Negative energy (impurities, kegare), it loses some of that original purity - so that’s why we go to the shrine, or practice faith in Kami, and do purification (oharae) ritual daily, to restore to that natural pure spirit. Negative energy (Impurities, Kegare) makes us feel “angry, sad, down, bitter”. However, negative energy isn’t always bad. It’s natural, and important to feel out these negative emotions too - these “impurities”, it’s a natural part of the Universe/Nature, and thus not “unnatural”, “an offense against nature (tsumi/sin)” or “bad/evil”. In fact, even Kami themselves are prone to kegare/impurities, and thus also do oharae, like people do. When a spirit is feeling negative, angry, rough, rude - it’s referred to as “aramitama” or rough spirit. It’s thought in Shinto, every being - person, kami - anything with a spirit/soul, has a single spirit/soul, but then four “aspects” or “souls” of that, that can manifest individually as well, but still part of one connection. This is Nigi, Kushi, Saki, and Ara mitama. Therefore, kegare in a sense is natural, we just need to keep a balance, in day to day Shinto living, and way of life. You can read more here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitamahttp://eos.kokugakuin.ac.jp/modules/xwords/entry.php?entryID=1181Now, when kegare is overwhelming to us, when negative energy consume us and get the better of us, we let that control us and overtake us. This is known as “tsumi” or translated as “sin” - but in a sense it’s more like an “offense against the laws of the Universe, offense against nature and yourself.” Tsumi is like killing someone, out of rage or hate, for example. That’s why, it’s important to keep the amount of kegare/negative energy constantly purified day to day, because it’s easy to accumulate, especially in our modern society which tends to get very negative. This is all traditional Shinto thinking, way back from the Jomon and Yayoi periods. Original Japanese thinking/interpretation of Shinto. This is why things like childbirth, menstrual blood, blood, illness, death was kegare. Not physically, but because…childbirth is painful and tiring (pain = bad energy/feeling, tiredness = not energetic )menstural blood (periods = painful, tiring, stress from not being able to work as usual, etc) blood (when blood is spilled, usually there is physical pain, or they are being treated for an illness by a doctor, or worse, someone has killed another, etc.) illness (well….you can see why)death (of course, because it causes immense grief and sadness, and conducting funeral rites, mourning, and so on…) It’s less about the physical aspects , but more about the emotional/psychological/how it affects our spirits. That’s why in myth, the sources of kegare were moreso the emotional turmoil. It wasn’t Izanami no Mikoto-sama’s corpse that was impure, it was all her hatred and rage (kegare) to Izanagi no Mikoto-sama’s fear (also kegare). Amaterasu Omikami-sama was not scared by the blood of the skinned horse, or the death of her younger sister (Wakahirume no Mikoto-sama) alone, it was the grief of the death of her sister, and the shock and trauma (kegare). If it was physical, she would have hid in the cave when Susanoo no Mikoto-sama threw excrement all over the palace - but she was able to brush it aside, it wasn’t a big deal to her. But when things cause real kegare (grief, trauma, fear, rage, anger), that is when problems arise. And also, that is why Ame no Uzume no Mikoto-sama’s dance (with joy, happiness, laughter, revelry) was Oharae/Purification and brought out Amaterasu Omikami-sama again. Now, all that being said….to your question, well,Personally, given all I explained,  I don’t see it as impure or bad. You should be respectful of course - but if you work with Shinigami or Death spirits in balance, and it is as a way to bring peace to those who passed on, or to ease grief and sadness of death, or strike a balance /understanding death as a natural part of life/the Universe, this is Shinto way/thinking. You can worship/work with Shinigami without keeping this in mind, but then it’s not Shinto - it’s just spiritwork with Shinigami. Even so, in Shinto it can  still be a grey area to some….because Some priests and people believe the later thinking/traditions, who feel physical things /aspects are impure. The view is the Asuka to Heian era influenced beliefs, when Shinto mixed with Chinese and Korean culture, and as a result Taoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism. In this tradition, it would be impure, because “Death” itself is seen as impure, not the energy/emotions surrounding it, and not good to deal with. But in these times lately, Shinto is moreso going back to that ancient/original belief system, and personally I feel it makes more sense, given the context of the myths and practices/rituals. This is why more and more shrines are also handling Shinto funerals, and offering Mitama (spirits of the deceased) home shrines in Shinto style (called Soreisha), and so on. I hope this could help!

Weirdest thing I've used in witchcraft would be my own wisdom tooth, I made a "wisdom" charm and set the tooth in beeswax after so it wouldn't be too odd. I have a couple more that I'm waiting to use, any ideas? 🤔🤗

Avatar

Teeth are so handy for magic. Think of everything they connect to and represent. First off, it’s a really powerful taglock, so using it to tie your energy to a working is an amazing tool. Even in a witch bottle (a bottle of protection that pretty much acts as “you” and a decoy to draw any negative energy/hexes/spellwork etc to it instead of you.) would be a great use of an extra tooth.

Teeth also connect to the old and ancestors (especially wisdom teeth) as they are bones of their blood, you! So using them as a tether for familial spirits is a good idea too.

The ask I answered before this made a protection charm out of their baby teeth so you’re on a really cool path!

Teeth also connect to hunger (literal or figurative and could be used for blessing or baneful magic), happiness (teeth show when you’re smiling and laughing), anger (gnashing teeth) and power in general. You could use them to “grind their bones to make your bread” as a binding ala fee fi fo fum.

Bind or sow discord.“Shut your mouth” or“Loose lips sink ships”!Last idea that comes to mind would be in divination. You could make lots to cast and interpret and a tooth can represent so many things, it’s an awesome addition to any form of thrown divination.

If you ever want to send some teeth my way, I would gladly accept lol

Ancestor Work

Ancestor work is a practice that is found all over the world in many different cultures, and traditions. There are a couple types of ancestors that have the potential to be worked with, and honored. These different types of ancestors have different connections to you, and can help you out in various ways. From these practices you understand that your ancestors are still with you in a spiritual form and can still help an impact your life. You will be able to honor, and communicate with your ancestors in order to gain insight, and understanding that you might not have gotten any other way. You can build relationships with all of those you have a connection with already that you may not even know that you are connected to. The types of ancestors as I categorize them here are blood ancestors, associated ancestors, land ancestors, and tradition ancestors.

Blood Ancestors:

Your blood ancestors are any entity from whom one is descended going all the way back to even prehistoric times. You will be able to determine more of your blood ancestor lineage through historical records, or DNA testing. Through the power of working with your blood ancestors you can more closely connect with yourself, and your bodies lineage. This does include entities who are not Homo sapiens, and that are also connected to you from human evolution.

Associated Ancestors:

Associated ancestors are ancestors that you consider to be part of your lineage, but that are not connected to you by blood. These would be friends, and family members that are not blood related. These individuals are connected to you in such a way that you have consider them to be worthy of your ancestral veneration. This includes non-human animals.

Land Ancestors:

Land Ancestors are those who lived on the land before you, and who also called it home. Land ancestors are knowledgeable about the area, and are great entities to get in contact with if you want to work with the land better. This also includes non-human animals.

Tradition Ancestors:

Tradition ancestors are ancestors who practiced, or was apart of a tradition, or group that you are now a part of. These types of ancestors are connected via practices, and understandings. This would be like practicing magick, and then honoring the magickal practitioners that have come before you. These ancestors would be able to provide guidance and understanding around your tradition and the practices of a specific group, or way of thinking.

Connecting, Honoring, and Working With Your Ancestors:

In order to connect with your ancestors you should first spend time learning about them and the way that they did things. Look into their lives, the things that they did, and the Legacy that they left behind. Learn about their likes, and interests, and study them as thoroughly as you can. looking into the tradition that you practice and how they honor their ancestors is also a good way of understanding your ancestors. This information may provide you with insights that will allow you to honor and work with them more effectively. You are also able to pick, and choose what ancestors you work with in case you do not want to work with some for certain reasons.

You can honor your ancestors by dedicating actions in their name, building shrines to them, and by making offerings to their spiritual being. You can perform ancestral prayers to communicate, and venerate your ancestors, and to even ask for aid. You are also able to invite your ancestors into your dreams, so that you may interact on the dreamscape.

By setting up ancestral shrines, and altars it allows you to make a spiritual connection to your ancestors, and to have a place where that spiritual connection is grounded. You will want to make sure that this place is cleansed both physically, and spiritually wherever you said it up. In these places you will be able to communicate with your ancestors telling them about your life, and being, while also being able to provide them with offerings. Through these places of communication you will also be able to ask your ancestors for help, and advice in many aspects of your life, and your ancestors may help you by protecting you and guiding you through the course of your life.

The ancestor shrines, and altars can be very simple or can be extravagant they can include things such as pictures of your ancestors, items that you associate with them, graveyard dirt from their graves, items in which they owned, or even pieces of them much like bones, or ashes. You would also be able to include things such as ritual supplies, and places for offerings. Things that you could go through the process of offering them are things that you know that they enjoyed within their lives, or things that you think they might like. You are also able to meditate at these places in order to bring your ancestors into your meditations, so that they will be able to meditate with you, and you will be able to communicate with them in that liminal space. You can go through the process of bringing power to your shrines, and altars by calling forth your ancestors to be in this place, and to bless the area in which it is in.

How did you come up with the "favourite memes"?

sorry, i misread your ask. I mostly looked at scripture and Apocrypha and other people’s interpretations of each disciple, and I did my best to kinda come up with a personality for each. From this personality, I assigned a meme.

For example, Magdalene likes the arthur fist meme because she always gets discredited and is prob always salty about it. For John, the reason he likes the fitnessgram pacer test meme is that there is a line in the Gospel of John that literally brags that he was a faster runner than Peter.

A thing I learned in one of my religious studies classes was that different disciples also claimed that they themself was Jesus' favorite lol. Like in John I think, it refers to John saying "Jesus' most favored disciple", but in another book it says the same thing about another disciple. So it honestly makes me laugh when ppl say that every line in the Bible is the incontrovertible word of God (with no bias due to who wrote it or where or when they wrote it)

Also the elements in Chinese culture have some differences from Western culture. I found this thing awhile back about the Chinese elements and like how to change your parenting style based on your child's dominant element (which could be determined by a pretty extensive personality quiz). It's pretty fascinating tho im sure it's more complex than my limited understanding.

Revelation 21:11 11 having the glory of God. Her light was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal.

Revelation 21:19-21  19 The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with all kinds of precious stones: the first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, 20 the fifth sardonyx, the sixth sardius, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst. 21 The twelve gates were twelve pearls: each individual gate was of one pearl. And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.

Talking about the stones that will be the foundation and adorn New Jerusalem.

Hey, Gang! Bea here, and I thought we’d do something a little fun today. Everyone’s invited to participate, whether you’re old hat at reading tarot or just starting out on your journey.

What I’ve done is pull three tarot cards from a well-shuffled The Wild Unknown deck, which you see above. These cards are the King of Swords, the Four of Swords reversed, and the Page of Pentacles reversed.

What you’re going to do is reblog this post and take a moment to interpret what the cards are trying to tell you. Don’t worry about how other people are interpreting the cards. Don’t look at any other interpretations until you’ve posted your own. Reblog this post with your interpretation of the cards!

This gives us a chance to look at the cards in different ways and I think it’s going to be neat. Go ahead, give it a try!

Right now, there's an energy of swift action and reaction. You need to learn to take a rest sometimes, ground, and gather your resources. It can't always be GO GO GO

Hair Magick

So i have a lot of hair and i’m not allowed to cut it. This makes it high maintenance, and having low energy i can go several days without brushing it. However, i find when i do put effort into my hair, it has a lot of magickal significance.

  • combing/brushing for grounding
  • or banishing negative energy caught up in your hair
  • i use plaiting/braiding as a type of knot magick
  • using enchanted hair pins etc
  • (if done before hand this would be useful on low spoon days)
  • glamours to affect how people see you
  • hair colours with magickal correspondences

I want to hear your ideas, let me know in the replies or comments!

Witch Tip: Astral Travel

A relatively easy way to begin astral traveling is with meditative imagining. This method allows a safe way for your mind and body to get used to the experience.

Create a safe place in your mind. Whatever you choose, it must remain fundamentally consistent, even if you change the content. It could be a house, a play ground, a field or a cave. Anything at all as long as there is a set edge or boarder. Mine for example is a birch Grove, but occasionally I will add a pond to swim in or a stone altar.

When meditating, imagine yourself there. The feel of the air, the grass or stone, are their animal sounds? What is the decor like? Make it as vivid as a fond memory. Sink into that day dream. Eventually things in the background will move or function without your thought, and you will focus less on your physical body.

This is a safe space half way between here and there. You can practice abilities and learn who your astral self is. When you feel ready, imagine a way out. A door, a tunnel, an archway of trees. Before leaving, make sure your astral haven is heavily warded so only you and those you explicitly allow can enter.

Bringing this back around for a few people asking how I began teaching myself astral travel.
