shout out to this skull rosary. made me think of @cryptotheism 's post about how it was the medieval catholics who added all the spooky scary skeleton shit to halloween, not the celtic pagans

Clarification: The Celtic pagans has some spooky skeleton shit, but when Christian syncretism started, they sent that skeleton shit into overdrive.

Catholics will see a skeleton and go "is anyone going to gild this" and then not wait for an answer

I want the spooky religious object. I will wear it. Give it to me.

catholic guilt vs protestant belief in your own inherent superiority, fight

wait no I just remembered a few hundred years of history I take this post back

I see both sides demonstrating guilt and asserting inherent superiority tho

^^^ this is v true. Catholic guilt is def a Unique Brand of guilt, but protestants absolutely have their own brand. I mean this meme about Luther being like "everything is mortal sin" exists for a reason:

And both have issues with inherent superiority. With a lot of protestants it's v much a "we're Better than Catholics cuz we think our specific interpretation of scripture/etc is Correct™️ and Catholics use extra books that we are Suspicious of, and also we're obviously better than non-christian religions, obviously", while Catholics are "we're Better than Protestants/etc cuz the Pope and associated teachings decided upon by various Councils are Infallible, and Protestant translations of the Bible are Skewed and Not Sacred, and also we're obviously better than other non-christian religions, obviously."

Like both are: "oh sweaty, you are obviously Confused. I will pray that God will Light Your Way to The Truth™️ (aka what I believe)" with this expression on their face

My favorite catholic lore is that anyone can make holy water in a pinch but the church puts dumb restrictions on us like ‘do this only if someone needs their last rites’ like I WILL bless this McDonald’s sprite and I WILL enjoy the crispiness of our lord and savior

Another bit is that holy water cannot be diluted. When I went to the Vatican the tour guide was explaining this, if you put any amount of holy water into any amount of normal water, the whole bunch becomes holy. This is how they sell Pope Holy Water in the gift shop. This is how I've been drinking only holy water for two months now. I am immune to demons.

It’s not actually any amount of holy water- according to the Church, the water has to be more than half holy water by volume. So if you take a half gallon+a few drops of holy water and a half gallon of secular water, you get one gallon of holy water, plus a few drops. You can then add a gallon of secular water to that and then you have two gallons of holy water. We’ve got a couple jugs of Pope Water in the linen closet at my parents’ house, because my mom used the heck out of this loophole after a trip to Italy in 2008. It was more than a decade ago at this point and we still have Pope Water. We no longer have that Pope, but by god do we have his water.

Here’s what a jug of Pope water looks like. Mom measured a fill line on them so that we never accidentally run out and just have old jugs of secular water lying around.

““In the United States there’s a Puritan ethic and a mythology of success. He who is successful is good. In Latin countries, in Catholic countries, a successful person is a sinner. In Puritan countries, success shows God’s benevolence. In Catholic countries, you’re sure God loves you only when you’ve suffered.””

— Umberto Eco, in this interview from 1986.

Anonymous asked:

We know that The Catholic Church has several military orders; the Templars and Hospitalers. But did the Orthodox Church have their own military order? Aside from the Varagin Guard of the Byzantine empire.

Not to my knowledge. The Eastern Orthodox was quite shocked at the idea of an armed pilgrimage and warrior monastic tradition during the Crusade Era.

Thanks for the question, Anon.

Please remember that each woman has the right to choose what is or isn’t empowering for her. You do not get to speak for another’s experiences. In orthodoxy we believe our traditions are beautiful, not repressive. They form a sacred bond between us and generations stretching back centuries. And we have the right to choose this path or any other.
Please support and respect the decisions of women to practice the orthodox Abrahamic traditions (Judaism, Catholicism, eastern Orthodoxy, Islam)!

could u imagine if ppl talked about catholicism the same way they talked about like… indigenous ppl’s religions….

girl in horror movie holding a bible open: “according to legend, a mob tortured a half-man, half-god, and nailed him to a wooden cross, leaving him to starve to death. But days later, on this very night, they found he had clawed his way out of the grave. Now those who believe lie in wait for him to rise again, To honour him, they have weekly gatherings where they chant and sing, and at the end of it they eat his flesh and blood.”

girl’s friend: “wow.. thats so creepy…”

horror movie jock: “it’s only a myth, don’t worry”

Grandma’s been excommunicated by the Holy Roman Catholic Church lads

So I come from a long line of women who go “fuck that I’ll do it anyway.” My grandma is continuing this fine tradition. She’s always been an interesting mix of DEVOTE Catholic and VERY feminist and has talked often about how the church needs reforming to bring it closer to the goal of perfect unity and equality under God’s love. Or something.

Anyway she found herself a congregation of likeminded folk who have already been excommunicated for ordaining a few women as priests. On the announcement that another ceremony was planned for the ordination of another woman, the Church officially stated that ANYONE taking part in the ceremony would be excommunicated.

To which grandma went “fuck that ill do it anyway” so yeah

My grandma is now a renegade catholic priest

Op your grandma is integrity goals
