They save each other as easily as breathing. They take and make hits for each other, when one is under the gun, the other is there to take it away. Switching between sword and shield like it was what they were made for. Even away from the battlefield, they did little things. like cover for each other when their twin is having a panic attack, holding and supporting each other in the wake of depression. A cup of hot chocolate and a hug just when it was needed.

It always seemed right.

When Billy saved Tommy, they thought it was the first and last. After all, they were strong enough to protect themselves, even if Tommy had needed the help to get out of jail. Needed the time to heal and recover. But they were very wrong and they would save each other many many times, it was far from the last.

And it certainly wasn’t the first.

The third time is a creation. They can feel themselves separating and they’re scared. i don’t want to lose you. you won’t. we’ll find each other again. i don’t want this power. i’ll hurt someone. then i’ll take it and you can use her brother’s. and i’ll protect you like he tried. yes.

The second time is a destruction. The pair have names during this time, and it helps them salvage what is left. They’re two parts of the same soul. Unfortunately, the soul was not their mother’s to claim and they are taken from her. The names help, but the thing that keeps their souls separate is the way they cling to each other, inadvertently giving each other form. I am you and you are me and you are mine.

The first time they saved each other was before they even had names. Something so small no one will ever know. That time before birth is fluid and fragile. Things created by magic are doubly so. It was not just by Wanda’s determination that her wishes are fulfilled, but also two scant shards of soul syncing and linking and making each other stronger. A feedback loop that sustained them both.
