You show up for your first day at Copyright-Free Magic School. As you're going through orientation, you're informed that all new students get a school-assigned familiar that they are responsible for housing and maintaining. The staff member assures you that your assigned familiar is appropriately chosen and reflects you in some way.

Spin this to find out yours. (Remember, you are responsible for maintaining this familiar in your dorm room.)

Got Spare Feathers?

BIRBLR! I found this really cool Facebook group through a mutual friend. https://www.facebook.com/groups/848166298569126/ Here’s what it’s about:

This group’s purpose is to receive and distribute donated feathers from Companion Birds, for free to traditional Native Americans. The feathers will be dispersed to craftsmen who make & give away items to be used in Native American church, blessings, naming of babies, or to be utilized as accessories in the circle of powwows. Macaw, Parrot, Asiatic Parakeet, Cockatoo are some of the feathers needed. Items made from these are fans, hair pieces, & adornments for sacred items. It is up to a 7 year wait for Native Americans to receive Eagle, Hawk, & Falcon feathers from the Federal Fish & Wildlife service, but the need for feathers to make and use for ceremonial purposes is there daily.  This is a great way for your companion bird to be honored. All feathers prior to use are blessed, praying for good feelings, good thoughts. This is done with all feathers, eagle, hawk, falcon, anhinga, scissortail, flicker, as well as donated companion bird feathers.   None of the donated feathers will be sold, bartered nor traded. This is a requirement of the person requesting feathers from the Feather Depot.

So that’s an awesome and important use for feathers you might just have laying around. I don’t know much about Native American culture, but from the posts it sounds like these feathers would have significant meaning to the people they went to. My girls are mostly too small except tail feathers (which usually come out mangled), but those with larger birds might enjoy knowing that their feathers are being cherished. Here are some photos from the group:

( here is a fan used in church made from about 60 or so ringneck feathers… or some other asiatic parakeet )

( This is how we keep our items made out of feathers when not in use. An aromatic cedar box.. some are made specifically to fit our fans… )
