Raleigh Becket, this is Mako Mori.
Nowadays, candidates eagerly seek each other out for drift compatibility. The written examinations, sparring sessions, and simulations aren’t for show. Sometimes, however, the neural handshake finds you first, and you never thought it would be you personally (again), but what else do you call that moment you raise your head, blonde hair damp and mussed under the umbrella, to find another pair of eyes staring back? They don’t belong to anyone you know, but from the expression on her delicately featured face, she certainly knows you—maybe you’ve met her before then? Your body stands still while your subconscious delivers an answer your mind hasn’t deciphered yet.
It translates into a long, slow click, the sound of a key finding its proper groove inside a lock, and echoes inside your chest while you continue to hold her gaze in an unspoken challenge. She stays wordless as the both of you let the silence stretch until someone were to give in, and now there’s a rush in your ears that reaches fever pitch in a roar—
“Raleigh Becket, this is Mako Mori.”
When she gives a nod of recognition, you finally blink from the temporary drift you were just caught in.
cries a lot about this
Usually I am allergic to the hotshot difficult attitude past-angst dude in films like this, but their relationship completely worked for me, and furthermore I thought it was well acted by both of them. Also: chemistry.
