Thoughts on Marlon
I wasn’t gonna write this but after seeing people try to defend his actions and say “Marlon did no wrong”, it’s gotten me pissed to the point I need to speak up.
So let’s debunk these excuses.
“Marlon didn’t mean to kill Brody.” This doesn’t change the fact that he still fucking intended to harm her to shut her up. He wanted to cover up for his own shit, and even if he never meant to kill her, he still did it.
Going back on that, if he never meant to hurt anyone, why would he intentionally try to murder Clementine? The excuse of “Marlon didn’t want to hurt anyone” falls apart as soon as he tried to kill Clem to cover up what he did. He wanted to kill Clementine, just because he couldn’t fucking take responsibility for his shit.
“Marlon was a scared teenager.” I get he is, but this doesn’t excuse the fact that he literally trafficked two group members, planned to do the same with Clementine and AJ, killed Brody, locked Clementine in the basement with a walker, and then proceeded to pin the blame on Clem.
“Marlon was remorseful for what he did.”
(I know he surrenders after but the fact he says this shit after says it all. He was never sorry for what he did.)
And now, finally, the AJ hate.
“AJ killed Marlon so therefore I don’t like him” or something along these lines, has been said, multiple times.
AJ is six. He is six fucking years old. He is a child. He doesn’t know any better. He was born into a walker infested world. The only person he trusts is his mother figure, Clementine. Marlon was pointing a gun at her, screaming, threatening to shoot her. AJ did what he thought was right, and killed Marlon, protecting Clementine (even though he had already surrendered).
The only human he’s ever been able to love and trust is Clementine, the person who raised him, so it isn’t surprising at all he’d have no value for any life besides hers.
However, saying that Marlon was killed due to “shitty writing” or because AJ is a brat is highly inaccurate.
Marlon was killed to show how dangerous AJ could get. It wasn’t because the writing was bad, y’all are only saying that so you can blame Telltale for not keeping your precious boy alive.
Marlon needed to die in order to show the main conflict of the season: AJ’s moral values. He doesn’t know right from wrong, and in order for the cast to become aware of that, Marlon needed to die by AJ’s hands.
In conclusion: You can hate Marlon if you like. You can love Marlon if you like. But, stop excusing his actions under the pretense of “he didn’t mean to uwu” and stop blaming everything on shitty writing. Most of all, stop fucking antagonizing a six year old kid because he did what he thought was right.
Also, to the Marlon fans: Stop commenting under everyone’s posts expressing their opinions saying “respect people’s choices and ships”. Criticism isn’t hate, learn the fucking difference.
