I love to know your toughts on the SvtFoE season premiere.

Don’t have a whole lot of time to get into detail, so here’s the quick highlight reel!

  • Glossaryck is still a dick and I love him for it.
  • “I almost died.”
  • There’s definitely more to Star’s mother than she’s letting on. She’s experimented with “dipping down”, taught Star a spell that would destroy her wand (apparently), and doesn’t want her daughter dabbling in any of it...yet seems to know deep down that it’s going to be inevitable at this rate. Very curious...
  • Ludo has been around comforts for so long he’d almost forgotten entirely what it was like to live for himself...and yet he’s still confronted by images of his old life. Haunted, even. That episode was absolutely AMAZING. Big props to the writers and boarders on that one.
  • Okay, one big observational theory that may explain the entire new season arc: new wand is clearly broken, or at the very least stands poised on the edge of corruption. Toffee wanted the old wand destroyed, or at the very least broken ("cleaved”, if you will). “You can cleave something in half, or you can cleave something together.” Notice on the wand Ludo found that the skeletal hand is missing a finger? Ten bucks says Toffee found the wand first, but couldn’t control its power, and in order to stabilize it, cleaved the crystal in half (losing his hand in the process) and buried it in the ground. Toffee can easily regenerate severed limbs (like any salamander would), but chose to keep his finger severed for some reason. A reminder, maybe. I’m guessing his plan is to maybe cleave the broken half of Star’s wand with the broken half of his wand, in order to gain some measure of control over it. Problem is, a half-cleaved wand is clearly going to produce only chaos magic (as evidenced by the new green tower at the end of the first ep). Hmm...

IN SHORT: I’m super excited by the prospects of this new season, and the long, long, LOOOONG wait was worth...well, the wait! I’m super excited!

I really hate that Star vs. the Forces of Evil made a Nazi reference. In the "Mewnipendence Day" episode, it is reaveled the the Mewnian settlers were transformed in to a "master race," complete with blonde hair and blue eyes.

Umm...I’m sorry, but I’m pretty sure that’s not what Mewnipendence Day was about. There is no mention of a Master Race, the settlers were transformed into knights (not blonde-hair-blue-eyes), and the obvious parallel they were making with the whole story was not a Nazi or even a World War 2 reference. It was a parallel to that time in American history when the English sent people across the Atlantic to “lay claim” to the land already occupied by Native Americans - specifically, the Plymouth people.

Let’s break it down a little:

Every year, the Mewmans (the people who inhabit the big castle on Mewni, including Star’s family) celebrate the day their ancestors arrived on the shores of Mewni (Star reads from a pop-up book that literally depicts this as a ship arriving on an island) and defeated the Evil Monsters, so they could “peacefull” follow their pursuit of “Life, Liberty, and Corn”. It’s a pretty clear parallel to how the English stole the land from Native Americans, then villainized them in the history books to justify what they did.

The pop-up book justifies the Mewmans’ obvious genocide by saying the battle was about the Monsters wanting to “re-steal” the land of Mewni away from Mewmans, much like how a lot of early American media depicted Native Americans as “savages” who tried to kill settlers and cowboys in an effort to re-take the land and the resources and the lives that had already been stolen from them (it’s carefully phrased in a way that makes it sound like the Native Americans [or Monsters in SVTFOE’s case] were aggressive for no reason, or because that’s just “how they are” all the time). The book glosses right over these facts so that it can prove - using basic propaganda techniques - that the Mewmans were totally justified in beefing up their warriors to an absurdly overpowerful state so they could CRUSH the Monsters, and the ceremony has become so deeply ingrained into Mewman culture that the people hardly even question it anymore, because that’s just the way it’s always been, even though the propaganda aspect is pretty much paper-thin as a disguise.

This also makes Toffee’s ambitions as a “Bigger Bad” much clearer. Re-watching the episode, I noticed that he is watching the re-enactment very intensely, while not speaking. There is a deliberate moment where he clenches his fist as Ludo comments “...what a MASSACRE.” There is also some carefully framed shots that linger on Toffee’s missing finger hand at some very critical moments - we see later that Toffee can effortlessly regenerate appendages, but he for some undisclosed reason, he’s chosen to keep his finger severed. It’s possible he was either AT the original Massacre (who even knows how old Toffee is at this point), or maybe he was involved in a re-enactment and lost his finger to a Mewman, or something like that. We still don’t completely understand his motive either (revenge? justice? using both of those as a way to leverage himself into power? or is it something even deeper?).

But yeah, no, it definitely was not a Nazi reference. Not from where I’m sitting, anyway.

To any uninitiated still lingering out there, Star Vs The Forces of Evil is awesome and you all should be watching it! (You can watch the episode in question here).

Just watched the Star Vs season 1 finale, “Storm The Castle”!

Like many others, I’m very confused, but also super enjoyed it! One of the things that seems to set SVTFOE apart from its other shows is that - like most of the older anime it’s based on, it can never quite tell when it wants to be serious or goofy as hell. And honestly, that’s kind of part of the show’s charm! I can’t tell if it’s all a joke or if I should really be afraid. It’s kinda like real life that way...

All of the weird and hilarious moments in the show are the things that really make me question how it all happened. It’s all the things the show DOESN’T say that make me wanna speculate! Tell me more about the chosen unicorn that lives in each new iteration of the wand. The new wand came back cleaved in half; does the new unicorn have any bearing on that? Why did the new unicorn speak Spanish Italian? Did Toffee KNOW the resulting explosion would happen after Star used the Whisper Spell? Will we learn more about the Whisper Spell later on, or is it really not that important since the wand was reforged anyway? Where did Star fling Ludo off to? Will Buff Frog remain a daddy going into season 2?

All of these things and more are often brushed off or hand waved away in the show, because the show is written from Star’s point of view. And brushing things off as unimportant is just how Star views the universe! She’s a magical princess with unlimited power, HOW it all happened isn’t as important as HOW she’s going to deal with it so she can get back to dancing with her friends, right?? There’s still all this unexplored and unspoken magic in the world, but that’s not what’s important to her, so why bother explaining it all? (Think like Rick from Rick & Morty, he doesn’t bother to explain how everything works either, because he’s too busy living it to question HOW or WHY)

I think that might actually be why I love this show so much...why try explaining magic? It’s literally magic. M A G I C !

So yeah! Can’t wait for season 2 now!

....next May.........
