"REBECCA SUGAR AT 15"
*Gasp* you want to know about me?! Okies…
My name’s Rebecca Sugar, I’m 15, and I’m a comic artist/stop motion animator. I’ve made two bad little movies, and some day I’ll make a really good one, but I dunno when. At the moment, comics are my passion.
I made my first comic spring break of freshman year at high school, called “All your base.” It’s 15 pages and makes no sense. My second comic book I did last summer. I planned on making it a series, but I don’t think thats gunna happen. It was called ‘Raven Drake,’ about a high school outcast. (there are a bunch of pictures from it in the art section of this site.) I’m not all that pleased with the art… it looked quite Jhoneny, and I’d like to think I’ve improved a lot since then. Anyway, with the help of Sir Speedy (for folding and stapling) and my dad (for printing the pages) I made a whole bunch of copies—and they really do look like a pro comic book. Its the coolest thing. I sold some copies to Big Planet, a comic store in Bethesda. The manager there was insanely supportive!! I owe him so much. He thinks I’m ready to go pro— (I’d like to think so…) and says I should send my stuff in to Slave Labor Graphics.
I actually met the publisher for Slave Labor at the small press expo in september. I did show him Raven, but he didn’t think it was professional looking enough. So I’m making a new book now called Wafties (thats a working title…) which will definately look a lot better, now that I’m more experienced. I’m hoping to finish it around winter break. It’ll be a self containted 28 pager.
I owe a whole lot to Jhonen Vasquez. His show Invader Zim was my gateway drug to the independent comic world. His books are the best I’ve ever read and his art is amazing! Someday I hope to meet him and thank him for changing my life.
Aside from all things Jhonen, I love the Nightmare Before Christmas, Chuck Jones’ cartoons, Oingo Boingo and all things Danny Elfman, Foo Swee Chin, Poems with made up words, Ted Naifeh, bright red hair, Sinfest, Zelda, saying “shroom,” reading fanfictions, Simpsons Halloween specials, Jim Mahfood, Idgiebay’s fan art, freesylin’ on piano, Roman Dirge, waltzes in D minor, the pulsing light on my computer, really stupid online quizzes, Rikki and Tavi Simons, getting fan mail, getting responses to my fanmail, striped socks, and the thought of sitting behind the SLG booth at the San Diego Comic con with all my idols someday… *_*
