Trip hangs around more gorgeous girls than Gary had cheerleaders haha!  These blue-eyed angels are all going on a shopping Trip in Kalos~ MAY REALLY WANTS FOOD.

I felt it would be fun to ask kasuria and solirad for character suggestions and what outfits they would wear (and they picked some really cute outfits!!) ahhhhh it was so fun~  I’ll have to do this again sometime!

I’m sorry, can I just talk about Stephan for a moment? He’s this buff, spiky-haired boy who’s known for his brutally tough fighting-type Pokemon but he’s got so much respect for his peers and rivals, and his battle style isn’t head-on like you’d expect it to be. He shows extreme skill and cleverness in his battle style.

In BW040 you see that he’s been hard at work training since his first loss to Ash, having evolved his Blitzle into a Zebstrika. During the battle with Bianca, even though the match seemed to be going her way, he remained level-headed and turned around to achieve victory. Then in BW041, in his second match against Iris and Emolga, his cleverness really shows as he anticipated his disadvantage at gender-specific moves since he already knew all Sawk were male, and specifically trained his Sawk to use Close Combat as a defensive move. Georgia was right when she said that Iris caught a lucky break because of Emolga’s special ability Static. After taking so many direct hits, one more attack would have done it in for sure. Furthermore, whereas most of the other Unova friends/rivals react poorly in defeat, Stephan was hardly phased, and gave Iris a heartfelt congratulation on her win.

In the next episode, though he is not battling, he’s content to judge Cilan and Burgundy on their Connoisseur battle, demonstrating his respect for other trainer classes. In BW069 he once again demonstrated his close bond with his Pokemon, as he managed to win Wishing Bell Festival contest (barring the fact that he got a little help from Litwick). Also, for a character who embodies many traditionally male characteristics, he had no problem cosplaying as Nurse Joy (which, to be fair, characters to a lot in this show).

In BW070, what impressed me the most was not Stephan’s first round win, but the fact that when Throh and Montgomery tried to get under their skin, Stephan rolled with the punches, and even held Sawk back from starting a fight. He has deep respect for battling and will not taint his honor by engaging in petty fights.

In BW071, he helped Ash train his Scraggy, even though they were rivals, and he managed to beat Cilan and Pansage, which is impressive considering Cilan is an accomplished and well-respected Gym Leader. Then in BW073, after facing off against Bianca, he got to battle Montgomery and Throh for the first place position, and their battle was tense but interesting. Throh’s brute strength managed to overpower every other competitor’s Pokemon easily, but Stephan’s strategy was to undermine the strength of these moves by literally letting them roll off the back. Sawk retained minimal damage after Throh’s first two attacks, but then it was caught up in Bind. Bind made it increasingly difficult to move and it seemed as though Throh’s strength was going to overpower them, but by using Bulk Up to loosen Throh’s hold, Stephan was able to launch into a powerful Close Combat attack. Though both Pokemon are clearly strong, Stephan gained the lead because of his superior battling strategy. Throh scores a direct hit with Superpower but Sawk is once again able to dodge his next attack. Using his ace in the hole, Montgomery calls for a Seismic Toss, and Sawk is nearly taken out by the attack, but demonstrates his strength by breaking free at the last second, and both Pokemon hit the ground hard. While it’s clear neither are strong enough to endure another attack, Stephan’s spirit reaches out to Sawk and he fires off one last Close Combat, effectively knocking Throh out, and allowing Stephan to win the Clubsplosion Tournament.

In his victory his celebrates by hugging his Pokemon (and looking super cute while doing it too). He may not be as powerful as Paul, or condescending as Trip, but I think he makes a good rival for Ash because he combines both brute strength and clever battling strategies to win his matches. Even when he loses, it’s never a KO. I know he’s not supposed to be as important as some of the other characters in the show, but I really like Stephan (even if nobody knows how to pronounce his name).
