[ID: a coloured digital half-body drawing of priya and malini from the burning kingdoms trilogy. they’re standing next to each other. malini is tenderly holding one of priya’s hands, as if placing something in it or tracing the palm with her fingers. they’re both looking down at their touching hands, their expressions peaceful. white flowers grow in front of them, and the background is a light green that turns to warm yellow at the upper edges, with a pattern reminiscent of leaves in the lower half of the drawing and climbing up the sides. beams of sunlight come from the upper right corner.
malini is wearing a blue and teal sari with a floral pattern, the edges of the fabric a golden yellow. she’s wearing elaborate golden jewellery and a bindi, and is crowned with red and white flowers. her hair is in a braid. priya is dressed in a simpler, unpatterned red and orange sari with similar yellow edges. she’s wearing less and smaller jewellery than malini. her hair is down. /end ID]

imprisoned by her dictator brother, malini spends her days in isolation in the hirana: an ancient temple that was once the source of the powerful, magical deathless waters — but is now little more than a decaying ruin. priya is a maidservant, one among several who make the treacherous journey to the top of the hirana every night to clean malini’s chambers. she is happy to be an anonymous drudge, so long as it keeps anyone from guessing the dangerous secret she hides. but when malini accidentally bears witness to priya’s true nature, their destinies become irrevocably tangled. one is a vengeful princess seeking to depose her brother from his throne. the other is a priestess seeking to find her family. together, they will change the fate of an empire.

The plants in the soil around them and the silt of the rockpool shivered. The air went still. There was a sound. A splintering. The remnants of the needle-flower essence had furled into new life, splitting through the bottle until it was in shards, falling to the ground.
