Some Final Fantasy Things

@somefinalfantasythings / somefinalfantasythings.tumblr.com

In the Final Fantasy universe, I've met characters who I fell in love with, experienced adventures I could have never been a part of in the real world, and have had a lot of fun along the way. It's only fitting that I should make a blog dedicated to these lovely, wonderful games. ..................I post/reblog Final Fantasy photos, edits, gifs, and fanart, and occasionally my own final fantasy opinions and experiences. I'd LOVE to answer any questions you send me. ^_^

Top 50 Final Fantasy Characters

My Top Fifty Final Fantasy Characters posts and descriptions are now all available under the same tag, HERE.  Sometime in 2013 I made a list of all my favorite characters and posted collages of each as well as an explanation for why I liked the character so much.  If you ever wish to see all fifty of these posts, you can now click on the third link on my blog under the blog's picture and description.  It's got a little diamond icon next to it and says "TOP 50 CHARACTERS."

Keep in mind that I made this list in 2013.  I believe I was partially through playing FFVI and hadn't played FFIV, FFIII, FFII, FFI, or Lightning Returns yet.  As I play more FF games, my list of favorites may very well change here and there.  My favorites will probably also change based on the fact that I'm a growing, ever-changing person.  When I replay any given Final Fantasy game, I may find a new appreciation of a character I didn't quite understand the first time through. Nevertheless, when I made my list in 2013, these were my favorites, and with good reason.  Some of them have been my favorites for as many as eight years, so they'll always be special to me.

Top Fifty Final Fantasy Characters

1. Vivi Ornitier, FFIX

Where do I even begin with this gorgeous little creature?  Vivi is a popular character within the Final Fantasy fandom.  I'm certain I'm not the only one who positively adores this little guy.  Similar to my feelings toward Rikku, I feel tremendous love and respect for Vivi and explaining it in words might be a challenge...  But let's go ahead and start typing it and see what I end up saying:

We meet Vivi very early on in the game, as he stumbles around Alexandria with a counterfeit ticket to the play everyone's going to.  This is when I begin to love him.  Right when we meet him, he's tripping over everything, he's lost, gullible, so sweet, and adorable.  How could you not love him?  He turns in this ticket he's really excited about and then finds out it's fake and is so clearly disappointed... He makes me want to cry already and I barely even know him at this point.

But that is only the beginning.  Eventually we find out Vivi is a much more important character than he seems.  He's not just this cute, unfortunate, gullible, little guy we love and need to feel protective over.  He's so much more complicated than that.  He doesn't understand where he came from, why he exists, how long he'll exist, or what happens after he ceases to exist. (These are all thoughts I think most people contemplate at various times in their lives.  Everyone wonders why they are here and what life's all about, what their purpose is, if there even is a purpose for them, what dying will mean...)  Vivi wants to understand the world and his place in it, just like everyone else.

In addition to all that, Vivi is a very powerful mage, but he fears these powers.  He doesn't understand them and is at first reluctant to use his magic.  But through the duration of the game, he learns to use his talents and becomes a very strong and powerful member of our party.  I think this is so relatable to so many people too.  Isn't everyone afraid of their talents to some extent?  I'm at the age where I'm finally qualified to be considered for jobs that require responsibility, jobs that actually matter.  I am capable of being a responsible adult, but it's so scary to accept this bit of power I have and to know I might mess up.  This isn't as awesome as Vivi's powers, but it's a parallel to it for me at least.  Everyone is scared of themselves and of messing up, if only just a little.

So we can relate to Vivi.  But that's not enough reason to have him as my top favorite Final Fantasy character ever.  Vivi deserves so much love and respect for much better reasons than his relatablilty.

This little mage is strong willed, brave, kind, and tells a beautiful, tragic story.  The best part about the FFIX story, in my opinion, is Vivi's story.  Within the game, he learns so much about life and friendship.  He learns what it means to live and to die, which is a really difficult concept even for adults to fully grasp... And Vivi is just a baby.  He was only just created... He also makes so many meaningful friendships and enriches the lives of everyone who knows him throughout the game, helping them with their own crises and being a kind friend along the way.  At a certain point in the game, Vivi realizes his mortality, and it makes him and every one of his friends, and me, and you, and everyone in the world really really heartbroken, but instead of him lying down and crying and cursing the unfair world, he makes the most out of what time he has left.

Vivi has so many things to wonder about, so many reasons to feel cheated.  Black mages like himself were created to be weapons.  Some were killed mercilessly right in front of him.  He finally met people like him and began to understand himself only to find out these people were all "stopping" (otherwise known as dying) at very young ages.  Vivi knew that meant his time was likely limited too. But he kept living, kept helping people, and left his mark on the people who grew to love him.

We can all learn a lot from Vivi.  All of our time is limited.  You might live to be eighty.  You might live to be thirty.  You just don't know, but no matter how old you live to be, you definitely will die one day, so you should try to use the time you have wisely, just like Vivi did.  Don't fear death. It's inevitable for us all.

He transformed from the beginning of the game to the end, from a scared, timid little creature who did not know his strengths, who feared the unknown and didn't understand life, to a strong, mature, brave person who made friends with nearly everyone he came in contact with and who taught them all valuable lessons about friendship and life and death as well.  Characters grow up in Final Fantasy games all the time.  That's a huge aspect of these games, but Vivi grew up so much, so fast.  He sort of had to.  And the changes between the beginning of the game and the end, for him, are huge, and so admirable.  He's such a wise little mage.

This scrambled, confused explanation does not do him justice, but Vivi is one of my favorite fictional characters in existence. I love him so much it's hard to put it into words, obviously...  Vivi will live on forever in the hearts of all of us who love him, and I'm certain there are so many Vivi-fans out there.  So, so many.  We love you, Vivi. Your memories will be part of the sky...

2. Rikku, FFX

This young Al Bhed girl is one of the coolest characters ever in the world of video games. I'm not sure I can even convey my love for Rikku within this post, but I'll certain try.

Let's start off with the basics:  Rikku is introduced early on in the game and is one of the very first characters to actually help you (Tidus) out in this strange new world you (he) find(s) yourself (himself) in.  (Wow... sorry for that previous sentence...) Though she and her Al Bhed companions seem a little rough, they are actually pretty helpful. They could have just left Tidus down in Baaj Temple to starve to death (as it seemed he was pretty incapable of getting himself out of there on his own... It looked like he was just going to lie there and die...)  Rikku helps him fight off some fiends, offers him some spaghetti o's or something, and is really pretty friendly.  She also shows him early on how useful she is in battle, when she steals from the enemies.  At first she pretty much just steals grenades, because that's all anything we fight seems to have... But you can use those grenades to kill enemies pretty well at the beginning of the game, so that's just great!  Then of course, later on Rikku steals stuff you cannot possibly obtain any other way.  She is, in a way, the most important character to have in your party... that is, if you care about having awesome weapons, armor, and items.

Alright then... Clearly I have a strong love of Final Fantasy thieves... but you already knew that, and Rikku's not the only thief in the world of Final Fantasy... Why else then is she ranked at #2 on my list of favorite final fantasy character ever? Well, I'll tell you:

Rikku is the youngest member of our summoner-guardian party. At only fifteen, she is fighting battles most adults would flee from.  And on top of that, she's assisting her cousin Yuna on a quest Rikku completely disagrees with.  Rikku thinks what she is doing is wrong... Rikku thinks Yuna shouldn't do it, that it's not worth the sacrifice, that there must be some other way to accomplish the same results without Yuna being killed for it.  She clearly feels so passionate about this, and yet she helps her cousin anyway, because she knows that's what Yuna wants.  It takes a very strong person to stand alongside a friend who is doing something you disagree with, yet Rikku goes along with it anyway, to support someone she truly cares for, and she doesn't speak ill of Yuna for it either.  She does, however, continuously fight to change Yuna's mind or otherwise prevent her from fighting Sin.

If there's something in the world which deserves tremendous respect, it's a fifteen year old standing up to practically an entire world to change something she feels isn't fair.  Rikku helps with plans to kidnap summoners to prevent them from what she feels are suicide missions.  She, along with her Al Bhed family create machines to try to defeat Sin another way... She's not just standing back and accepting the world with all its faults.  Instead, she seeks to change those faults, to make the world a better place, even when everyone tells her she shouldn't and that she can't.  She's fighting so hard for what she believes in, even though it's an unpopular opinion.  I cannot even put into words how much I respect that.

And one last reason Rikku is someone I really relate to is that she's Al Bhed.  The Al Bhed people, in Spira, are treated as outcasts, as sinners, as though they are the scum of the world... and for what? Because they built machines and Yevon says that's wrong for no conceivable reason? Because the Al Bhed just aren't understood by the rest of the world?  People act horribly toward Rikku and toward Al Bhed in general for no reason other than the fact that they know where she comes from and they don't like it.  Even our own Wakka enjoys her company and then decides he doesn't like her when he finds out she's Al Bhed... People dislike her and her people for just that reason...  Because she's a part of a community they don't understand.

I'm sure almost everyone has been treated unfairly for some stupid reason like this... because your religion, race, gender, age... any sort of dumb excuse for someone to say you're not as good as they are. I'm sure most people know how frustrating and hurtful that is.  Rikku experiences this all the time, and yet she shrugs it off for the most part.  She's so strong, and so mature considering her age.

At first glance, she may seem like she's just silly and cute, but she is really so patient, understanding, passionate, intelligent, crafty... the list goes on and on... I respect you so much, Rikku!!

3. Faris Scherwiz, FFV

When I first started playing Final Fantasy V, I was pretty sure I wasn't going to be able to get as emotionally attached as I did to the games I had played before. I figured I start playing, get bored pretty quickly, and forget about it.  You hardly ever hear anyone in the Final Fantasy fandom speaking positive words about the games prior to VII... In fact, you don't hear much of anything about these games.  I figured they probably weren't very good if no one ever talked about them... They must have just been boring...  And the fact that the graphics are waaay old-fashioned made the game seem like I maybe shouldn't even bother playing it...  It's harder to feel a connection with characters who look like legos... But I was proven wrong when I met Faris, one of my favorite Final Fantasy characters ever!

We first meet Faris when we're trying to steal her ship.  She, the captain, and her pirate crew travel the seas on a pirate ship without the aid of wind with the help of a sea dragon, known as Hydra on my PS version of this game.  Hydra and Faris have a special bond, which is something I admire. (I've mentioned before my love of Final Fantasy characters who have non-human animal friends. My own best friend is a dog, so I can relate to such characters.)

Faris joins the rest of the party because she sees Reina (Lenna) wears a pendant just like Faris's. She, unlike the others, goes on this journey to learn more about herself rather than to save the world.  She does what is in her best interest, not what is in the best interest of everyone else.

When we are first introduced to Faris, we are meant to believe she is a male, and that's exactly what she wants us to believe.  Because she was raised from an early age by a bunch of male pirates, she dresses and behaves in a typically masculine fashion in order to be taken seriously.  Assuming the identity of a man probably helped her maintain courage and confidence.  Because everyone thought she was a man, they respected her more.

She later learns that she and Lenna are sisters, and that she (Faris) is the long-lost princess of Tycoon. After learning this, she is protective of her little sister and becomes a much more caring person toward the rest of the party (particularly Lenna.)  Eventually, she considers all of them her friends.

Though it is learned that she's a female, and more importantly, a princess, Faris doesn't let that change who she is.  She gets dressed up as requested by those who want her to behave more princess-like, but it's clear she feels awkward about it.  She enjoys being a pirate and acting in a more stereotypically masculine way.  That's who she is...

I also love that she doesn't get wrapped up in any romance plots.  I love those independent women characters who don't end up dating someone by the end of their stories. It seems almost all characters have to be partnered up romantically in the end, not just in Final Fantasy, but in all sorts of movies, shoes, books... But in real life, some people just aren't into romance.  It's always nice to find a character whose values and aspirations match your own, and to me, that character is Faris.  I'm not into romance; I would like to be a pirate; I would love to be a man, or at least treated with more respect than some people give to women.  Plus, Faris has gorgeous long flowing purple hair. That's awesome!

I hope they remake FFV someday, with good graphics.  Most of the best Final Fantasy characters exist in FMV scenes of their own games, or at least in Dissidia or prequels/sequels of FFVII, with good graphics... Faris is one of my favorite characters ever, and I don't even know what she looks like... Not in the good graphics... But I just know she'd be gorgeous.

4. Oerba yun Fang, FFXIII

The best thing about Final Fantasy XIII is this lovely woman right here. Fang is a strong, independent woman who don't need no man. She fights better than any of the others and has the coolest summon as far as I can see it.  Bahamut is awesome!    There's no doubt about it; She's the best character to have in your party... That's just my opinion, of course, but my opinion is based on the fact that she's the strongest character in the game... She also has a high HP, which makes her a good lead character, so you don't have to worry about dying... Also, She's a dragoon... Remember how I'm in love with those? (with the exception of Kimahri.)  Hooray!

Fang is more than just a bad-ass killing machine.  She's strong-willed, yet compassionate. She is honest and doesn't let anyone take advantage of her, but she clearly cares about her friends, especially her partner, Vanille, who she clearly states she'd do absolutely anything for.  She spends the first half of the game trying to reunite with her significant other (alright, the game doesn't clearly state that they are in a relationship, but come on... COME ON!) And of course Fang also fights for the other characters as they become her friends as well.

In addition to all that, she's intelligent, dresses in beautiful clothing, has a wonderful accent, and is the most gorgeous Final Fantasy character ever.  I've got crushes on a lot of Final Fantasy characters, but Fang might be my most potent crush.  She's just so pretty, and has such a lovely personality.

There are many Final Fantasy characters who seem to be built to be role-models, characters you're meant to look up to, characters who in real life you'd migrate toward.  These are characters who are easy to get attached to in the game too, because you can tell they know what's what and you can sense they would be able to make good choices and lead you to out of harm's way. Fang is one of these such characters.  I just feel good having her around.  I trust her to make sure I don't die. ^_^

And of course, she and Vanille are my favorite Final Fantasy couple. :D They are just so cute together!

5. Cid Highwind, FFVII

Cid Highwind is a man whose introduction in FFVII says a lot about him.  We first meet him in Rocket Town, where he's persisting in working toward his goal of constructing a rocket and making it into space.  He's passionate about science, loves to fly (which is very useful in the worlds of Final Fantasy,) and has no qualms about using colorful vocabulary and chain smoking as much as his heart desires.  During our first meeting with him he also graciously offers us some delicious tea!  How pleasant!

He seems like such a genuine person.  He says and does what he wants, and that's that.  He may swear and act kind of rude, but he's a nice person. He cares about his friends, but he doesn't feel the need to act all goody-goody about it.  Those kinds of friends who will tell you when you're being stupid are the best kinds.  Honesty is the best policy.  He may seem a little rough around the edges, like he might not really have much compassion for anyone, but damn it, if you mess with his friends, he's gonna kick your ass. He loves those guys!

Final Fantasy VII contains many comedic characters, but none of them make me laugh as much as Cid does.  Have I ever mentioned that I think swearing, to an extent, is hilarious?  People attach such a stigma onto it, so when someone is able to use swear words so casually, I get a kick out of it. Cid is so charming, in an unusual way.  I love how he is demanding and vulgar at the same time as he's being hospitable, and I also appreciate his helpfulness... Where would I be without the Tiny Bronco and The Highwind?

Cid is also one of the strongest characters in Final Fantasy VII, and always one of my top picks, if not my very top pick, for who to include in my party. (I almost always choose Cid and Vincent... and then Cloud is forced on me, but he's a really good fighter too, so I'd probably pick him anyway.) Cid fights with a spear and is a dragoon.  Remember me expressing my love for dragoons?  Probably not... I don't expect any of you guys to read and keep track of everything I ever write, but I do love dragoons, for the most part, and Cid is one of the best. There's only one dragoon I like more, and she's number four on this top fifty list...

6. Selphie Tilmitt, FFVIII

Selphie is by far my favorite character in Final Fantasy VIII. She's friendly, cute, funny, and has a great sense of humor.  Selphie is of course nice to everyone.  Some of the other characters seem annoyed by each other, but if Selphie feels that way too, she doesn't make it known.  That involves a lot of patience.  Either that, or she really does love everyone, which is even better!  I wish I had the capacity to love everyone... I get annoyed too easily sometimes...

Notice the impossibility of Selphie's hair?  Me too.  And I love it!  I'm a fan of people who look or dress different than "normal."  Selphie's impossible hair is one of my favorite things about her appearance.  It's so freaking weird!  I love it!

And as I mentioned before, Selphie is cute and funny.  She's a very charming and sweet person, delighting in simple things, such as music and trains.  She doesn't seem to get all wrapped up in romance to the point that it consumes her life, which is always good.  And I believe she made a joke about skinning a moomba and eating it?  I don't remember what exactly she said, but it was really morbid and I liked it. ;)

One last thing: Selphie is brave, fighting all those monsters and enemies at the young age of seventeen... And her limit break is amazing!  She can cast spells multiple times, which is very useful.  Her limit also doesn't take the spells out of your reserves, which is even better.  That alone is grand, but the coolest thing about her limit is her "The End" spell, which I personally have never gotten, but I think it's hella-fucking cool that it's a possibility.  Watch out for cute little Selphie...  It's a rare occurrence... but she may be able to end your life with one simple spell...  No one else can do that...

7. Vincent Valentine, FFVII

Vincent may be one of the most awesome, bad-ass Final Fantasy characters ever created.  Just look at him...  I don't really need to explain this, but I will anyway.  He is an optional character found in a coffin.  He wears a lovely, long, tattered, flowing, red cape and has the most beautiful hair I've ever seen.  One of his hands is an awesome golden clawed gauntlet and his limit break makes him turn into a fucking literal monster.  When he's not in his chaos mode, during which he attacks the fuck out of everything and you cannot control him, he fights with a gun, which is something mostly only cool characters do. They don't want to get right up close and personal with the enemy... They just kill it from a distance.  Less messy.

Okay... So clearly Vincent's got that cool vibe to him.  I love stuff having to do with death, so him sleeping in a coffin for years upon years is pretty awesome... He's almost like a reanimated corpse... He just laid there for ages like he was dead.  That's awesome. But lots of Final Fantasy characters are awesome (maybe not this awesome... but awesome still.) Vincent scored so high on this list for other reasons too.

Vincent Valentine is compassionate.  He helps people out and makes friends with people even though he seems to be a loner.  Being a loner myself, I know how hard it is to connect with people.  Vincent must really care about his friends to bring himself to be around them when he seems like he'd usually like to just sit in a coffin and pretend to be dead.

He's also easy to relate to, for me, and probably for a lot of people who play the Final Fantasy games.  He's a favorite character among many, not just me, so I'm clearly not the only one who feels a connection with him.  He's relatable because he seems to hate himself to some extent... I'm certain a lot of people are pretty critical of themselves.  Many of us are more judgmental of our own mistakes than the mistakes of others.  He has regrets about his past, and who doesn't?

In a way, he can be an inspiration for those of us who feel the same ways in our own lives.  Vincent has so many regrets.  He seems to loathe himself.  But we love him.  We see him and think, "No, Vincent!  You're amazing!  Don't hate yourself! No regrets, Valentine!  You're perfect!"  If we can see that Vincent is being too hard on himself, maybe we can begin to feel like we are being too hard on ourselves too... Maybe through loving Vincent, we can learn to love ourselves.

He's also one of many Final Fantasy characters I have a huge crush on. He's so pretty. :')

8. Oerba dia Vanille, FFXIII

Vanille is so adorable, and I always love having her in my FFXIII party.  I hear tell Hope is a better mage, but I love Vanille so much as a character, so I keep her around instead.  She's a fine medic and ravager, and her death spell paired with her eidolon, Hecaton was so incredibly useful in killing those adamantoises before my party was strong enough to kill them without the death spell.  Couldn't have done that so early on in the game without Vanille. ;)  "Alright!  Here it comes!" (that's what Vanille said eight-hundred times while I cast death on countless adamantoise.)

So we've established she's a useful character, but what else? She's got a great personality, of course. She's generally cheerful and tries her hardest to be positive, nice, helpful, and caring toward everyone, even though she's got a lot to be worried about.

I remember Vanille telling Hope once something along the lines of putting off stress or worries until later if they are too much to deal with now.  That is, instead of feeling miserable and worried all the time, Vanille prefers to just push all feelings of dread or guilt out of her mind when she can, in favor of dealing with it later.  While that's probably not mentally healthy, it's a philosophy I practice all the time, so I find Vanille to be very easy to relate to.

She also makes up half of my favorite Final Fantasy couple of all time.  She and Fang are the most beautiful, genuine Final Fantasy couple ever in my opinion.  I love them so much. :')

And I don't care what you say; I love her accent.  I love that it's different than usual FF characters, and I think it's really cute!  I love listening to Vanille talk.  She's great!

9. Auron, FFX

Man... Auron is just too awesome.  He's the first character you really meet in FFX (besides Tidus, who is you.) He's sort of your mentor, and I just love mentors... because they help me! :D  It's always nice to have someone around who will help you when you're a newbie or otherwise just uninformed...

As soon as I met Auron I immediately looked up to him and thought he was amazing.  He killed stuff significantly better than I did and looked awesome while doing it. When you finally get him to join your party again later, he still kills things better than everyone else (assuming they aren't anyone else's obvious "specialty" like an elemental or flying monster or anything anyone else is created to be best at killing.) He's the strongest, so for anything that's a huge boss battle or just some big bulk that needs to be killed any way you can, Auron's pretty damn useful.  Also, he looks kind of like Robert Downey Jr.  That's sexy.

And he's also a really genuine person.  He doesn't fuck around and try to impress anyone.  He's honest, and if you're being a tool he'll probably tell you in some way or another, but he's not a bully or anything.  If he makes some negative comment about you, it's probably because you deserve it.  He's not a big mean jerk like Kimahri or a discriminating douche like Wakka. (I'm sorry if you like Kimahri and/or Wakka... I admit they are a lot more likable in the end...)  But just think about how each of those characters reacted to certain things and how Auron reacted differently.  Tidus was kind of an annoying idiot. Kimahri attacked him.  Auron just made little snide comments and tried to inform him little by little.  Rikku is Al Bhed (which really, no one has any right to be angry about.)  Auron knew immediately, because all Al Bhed have the same eye color, but he was fine with it.  Wakka learned of it and acted like a complete bastard.  At any rate, what I'm trying to say is this: Auron may seem a little intimidating, but he's never actually mean. He's just honest, and sort of a teacher.  He's the sort of authority figure I actually wouldn't mind listening to (and that's rare.)

On top of all that, Auron is also really quite a caring person.  He clearly cares a great deal about all of his comrades, even the ones who are kind of dicks.  He fights alongside the rest of the party because he cares, not to be a hero, to make himself look cool by showing off his mad skills, or anything else.  He knew the fathers of the two main characters, and he's kind of looking after Yuna and Tidus as one last favor he can do for his buddies who are dead/sort of dead. :'(  How touching...   And all the while, Auron's dead too...  Oh man... I'm so sad.

10. Yuna, FFX

Yuna is potentially the most powerful character in Final Fantasy X, through her aeons.  She may seem small and physically weak, but you all know you'd bring her into your party during your moments of desperation and near-death in order to utilize those aeons.  She's the only character in FFX who can summon.  In most FF games, anyone can summon, or at least more than one character can... But in FFX, she's the only one, and her summons are damn nice! You can control them for as many turns as they are still alive, which can last a while if you're savvy about it.

And of course, once your characters are all maxed out on their sphere grids, everyone is pretty much just as strong as everyone else... Except Yuna still has those aeons, and if you bothered getting the Magus Sisters, your Yuna is a force to be reckoned with.

But of course Yuna is worth so much more than her abilities (and her aeons' abilities) in battle. She's also one of the most pleasant Final Fantasy characters I can think of.  She's so nice, and cares so much about everyone.  She cares about her friends, of course, and fights with them even though they are all meant to be protecting her.  But she cares also about everyone in Spira.  She fights to defeat Sin so that her friends and everyone else in the world can have a few years of peace.  She's not even saving the world so far as she knows.  She's just giving people a few more years of peace between Sin's destruction, and at the expense of her own life.  Wow... That's really selfless... And that's not even all!

Yuna went so far as to actually marry a guy she didn't like so that people she doesn't even know would be happy.  The way I see it, she knows she's going to be dying soon, so she's using her entire existence to please everyone else as best as she can.  I don't know about you, but if I knew I was going to die soon, I'd do everything for myself.  I'd go where I want, do what I want, never spend time with anyone if I didn't want to... But not Yuna.  She's spending her last moments still trying to make people happy... And they aren't even necessarily people she likes or even knows... Just people in general, who want to see a pretty celebrity couple (Yuna and Seymour... Yunmour... or something...)

And even when certain people call her a traitor and treat her terribly, she continues with her journey.  She's fighting for people who don't even respect her...  People who would have had her executed...  Oh, Yuna... You are so much more forgiving and kind than I could ever be...

Also, she's really pretty.  Someone told me once that I resembled Yuna and I felt very pretty for a moment before my paranoia set in and I wondered if they were just making it up to be nice...  Yuna's gorgeous!

11. Freya Crescent, FFIX

Final Fantasy IX was full of some really awesome characters.  In my opinion, Freya Crescent is one of the best in the game.  I often appreciate strong female characters, and Freya is no exception.  Many females in the Final Fantasy universe fulfill some type of mage role.  They aren't strong fighters, but are great at white or black magic.  Not Freya.  Freya is a dragoon (which coincidentally is the job class of many more of my favorite characters: Fang, Kain, Cid Highwind...) She is a strong physical fighter, which is very respectable.  That's not to say I don't respect the mages... It's just always nice to see some typical gender roles reversed.

Freya is also so mature.  She doesn't hold grudges or act rude towards anyone.  In fact, I remember her as being a very friendly person toward all of the other characters.  Many of the FFIX party had disputes with each other, but I can't remember Freya ever really having a problem with anyone.

She is not a typical human character, and doesn't necessarily adhere to common notions of what is considered pretty, but I think she's very beautiful nonetheless.  She's elegant, jumping gracefully as a dragoon and speaking calmly to those around her, offering them sound advice and kind words of friendship.  She also does that weird dance about the sand storm in Cleyra... Weird, but still elegant, I suppose.  Her tragic love story and its lack of a happy ending is also beautiful, in a way.

12. Caius Ballad, FFXIII-2

Caius was by far my favorite character in FFXIII's sequel.  This game is all about time travel and how changing the events in time can affect people, whether that effect is positive or negative.  For Yeul and Serah, the future changing means they'll see a different future and their lives will be shortened. Caius knows this and since he cares more about Yeul than anyone else, he does what he can to save her from having to die young over and over in different incarnations of her original self.  Caius doesn't want the future to be changed any more.  This means certain people will have to die, but the person he cares about most would live.

Serah and Noel also wish to save people they care about, by changing the future.  Serah and Noel's actions also result in certain people's deaths.

To me, it seems Serah, Noel, and Caius are all seeking the same sort of goal.  They don't want certain people to die.  It's strange to me that Caius is somehow considered a villain and Serah and Noel are somehow considered protagonists when both of them are causing people to die in order to fulfill their goals.  In order for each of these characters to achieve the future they want, other people who would have lived otherwise must die.

So I don't feel like Caius is really a bad guy.   He's really passionate about what he wants and he's willing to kill for it.  That's not a bad thing in my eyes.  Serah and Noel are more covertly the exact same way.  At least Caius is honest about it. If you're going to cause people to die, at least don't act like you're everybody's hero while you're doing it.

And of course, I must mention that he's gorgeous in a Vincent Valentine sort of way.  I love long hair. And purple hair... He's also incredibly bad-ass and I wish I could replay FFXIII-2 as him and kill everybody.

13. Ultros, FFVI

Ultros is so fucking weird. He's this bizarre perverted octopus who always shows up seemingly out of fucking nowhere to attack us.  In rivers, theater stages, caves... He even showed up in the sky one time...

But when he does attack us, it's not this malicious, angry type of fight... He seems to almost be toying with us more than anything.  Just look at the things he says to us before the battle starts... "Did ya miss me?" "I was just thinking about you!" He's just like a younger sibling or someone else who is always following you around trying to make you mad, but with no real harm intended.

I like Ultros for many of the same reasons I like cactuars.  He's weird looking and doesn't really make sense.  The plot doesn't need him.  He's not on Kefka's side or ours... He's just kind of there, fucking with us at random. Like a cactuar, only he talks! Even better!

14. Eiko Carol, FFIX

Eiko is so hilarious.  She lives in Madain Sari with only moogles as her companions/family, has a very inappropriate crush on Zidane, and calls people obscene names (I remember her calling someone a bimbo once.  I'm not exaggerating.)  This would be funny if a teenager did it.  It's even funnier considering the fact that Eiko is six years old.

She's not only funny though. She's emotionally strong, very brave, and really a sweet person.  Eiko is only just a little child, and yet she lived with no human contact for most of her life.  Of course, she's got the moogles, and they are great friends to her, but moogles are a lot like children, so she didn't really have much parental guidance in her life.  This is probably why she's so mischievous and a little socially inappropriate at times.  Nevertheless, she's a really caring person.

Even though she didn't know of her relation to anyone in Zidane's party at the time, she joined up with them and risked her own well-being to help make the world right again.  No one would have blamed her if she had elected to stay behind.  She is, after all, only six years old.  But she felt it was her duty to help, so she did.

She's also useful in battle, as a white mage and summoner, and if you take advantage of that Marcus/Eiko leveling up "glitch" she can end up with really high stats, so that's cool.

15. Yuffie Kisaragi, FFVII

If you can forgive Yuffie from being a pain in the ass and stealing all your materia, it's easy to love her.  She's funny, cute, cheerful, confident, and generally friendly.  I've mentioned many times before that I love thieves in Final Fantasy games, because I love having at least one of every item that exists in each game and stealing is a great way to make that goal a reality.  Of course, anyone in FFVII can be a thief if you equip steal materia on them, but Yuffie is meant to be the best at it.

Yuffie has many opinions and is not afraid to voice them.  Because her opinions aren't generally stupid, I like this about her.  It's always good to be opinionated if you're also intelligent. If something's going down and Yuffie thinks it's unfair, she's probably going to say something.  The world benefits a lot from people who are willing to stand up for what they believe in. (Like I said, unless what they believe in is something stupid...) But Yuffie isn't stupid.  She's very smart.

I think a lot of players of Final Fantasy could probably relate to Yuffie.  She's got a sort of obsession with materia and will do whatever she can to get her hands on it.  Didn't we all feel the same way while playing FFVII?  I know I certainly stocked up on materia and would have been willing to do almost anything to get more.  I would have gladly murdered Cait Sith if it would have granted me more materia. But then, that's not much of a sacrifice...

Yuffie also cares about where she comes from.  It's always nice to remember one's heritage. She strives to restore Wutai to its former glory and to prove herself to her father.  She rebels against her family, but still wants them to respect and understand her.

16. Kuja, FFIX

Kuja's logic is "I'm going to die, so everyone else must die too." That's pretty interesting, and I can definitely understand why he would feel that way.  Who wants the world to go on without them?  It's not necessarily that most people don't want anyone to move on and going on living... It's just hard to picture a world without yourself as a part of it.

In a way, Kuja is just like Vivi and the other black mages, only he doesn't react to his existence as well as they do. He was created for someone else to use.  That's his whole purpose, and that fact really pisses him off, which is perfectly understandable - no one likes to be used, and everyone wants to feel like they matter and can make their own choices.  That's exactly what Kuja begins doing, making his own choices, including gaining control over some eidolons and killing Garland, who created him.  He doesn't want to be anyone's puppet.

Kuja was created to be a murderous monster.  He wasn't designed to care about anyone or anything but himself and his master.  But he didn't stay that way.  In the end, he feels compassion for Zidane and his company.  He even apologizes for what he's done and transports everyone to safety.  It seems like his lack of childhood makes him somewhat childish.  He wants to be treated fairly.  He doesn't want other people to live if he can't.  He wants to be important.  He doesn't care about anyone, and yet he does.  What a complicated person...
