This is the game they made a brain rot movie of and it is kinda sad seeing such a big piece of nostalgia turned into something that is clearly not geared towards the age group who was raised with it. They could’ve made something so beautiful and at least tried to replicate that magical feeling of being a kid and discovering/learning everything this game has to offer whilst the soft music plays in the background.

The saddest part is that they could've 100% aimed this movie at children and still make a good movie adults can enjoy as well.

But no... they made a movie neither kids nor adults enjoy...

while i understand that this is meant to be a joke about hellish capitalism, again, we cannot erase an important dimension to his work: franz kafka was a jew. he and his families were jews during a time period where traditional, religiously-based jew hatred was being replaced with a new pseudoscientific belief that jews were to be hated and oppressed because they were a subhuman race. this transition to race-based hatred of jews meant that even assimilated jews- who considered themselves citizens of states before they were ever jews- were now being irrationally targeted and hunted.

the term “anti-Semitism” was created specifically to name this new racial hatred of Jews. it was coined in 1879- 4 years before Kafka was born. 

in “the metamorphosis”, Gregor Samsa wakes up one morning to find himself transformed into a "monstrous vermin". in kafka’s real world, jews woke up one morning, in their country that they were told was now enlightened and accepting of all people, and found out that they were now considered “monstrous vermin”. and then 6 million jews of his generation were exterminated. 

i am giving the simplest analysis to this right now, but we need to understand that you cannot just blanketly universalize his work. you cannot remove the context of kafka’s jewishness or that he lived at a time when antisemitism became fervently racial. yes, discuss how his work comments on capitalism, society, etc. but to only use ONLY these lenses and to ONLY universalize his work is dishonest, whitewashes his work and life, and further exhibits how little non-jews know or care about the jewish history and the how antisemitism has impacted jews for over 2000 years.

In addition, Gregor Samoa is widely understood to be a stand-in for Kafka himself. While we can't diagnose him, he did have symptoms of body dysmorphia, and he struggled with his sexuality as well as suicidal ideation.

All of Kafka's writing was deeply personal. He viewed it both as a form of prayer and of purging.

They actually make physical media for a much larger percentage of movies than they ever did in the past. Often with a lot more care than any small release was treated in the early dvd days. Its just if you only watch streaming stuff or the big new recent box office hits you won't see that. It is so ridiculously easy to get physical media for movies that even 5 years ago you couldn't even find. Like yes Netflix is a stingy bastard but so many things are available on disc WITH special features than ever before

It's important to push back as hard as possible against the idea that the outside world should be entirely comfortable and should feel completely safe (which is meaningfully different from actually being safe) because when this goes unchecked you end up with people who think that the sentence for being annoying should be death. This is maybe the most apparent in how people talk about drug use and homelessness; I spoke with a woman this summer who told me that she hoped her neighbors overdosed and died to "teach them a lesson" because they have frequent overnight guests, something which is objectively mildly annoying and not meaningfully dangerous. Unhoused people are incarcerated, displaced, brutalized, and left for dead because they annoy people and offend people's sensibilities. The inability to just walk away from an inconvenient or unpleasant situation, to just manage annoyance and inconvenience and discomfort, kills people all the fucking time.
