That girl in sixth grade who […] thought I’d marry Brandon Boyd from Incubus, got suspended for refusing to take my Nas poster down […]. Still that girl. - Solange Knowles (March 2015)
Seventeen Magazine - Sound-check:
We rolled our eyes when we heard that Solange, Beyoncé’s 15 year old sister, was putting out an album. Like how tough could it have been for Solange to get a record deal? But her upcoming debut, Solo Star, proves that Solange has the goods. “It’s totally different from Destiny’s Child,” she insists, adding that she wrote most of her own material and worked with different producers from DC’s. Still, there are similarities, namely that husky Knowles voice and the hyper R&B beats. And Solange admits hanging with her sis’ group has its perks. “I can go backstage with them, so I get to meet a lot of stars.” Like? “Nas!” she squeals. “When I met him, I just started crying, I was such a dork. I have a teddy bear named Nas - after my favorite rapper - and another called Thug Bear, who does a little rap I made up about the TRL tour,” says Solange. And though Solo Star is full of bootylicious hip-pop anthems, Solange also likes the harder stuff. “I love Incubus and Lifehouse and I’ve been getting into Linking Park lately,” she says. Beyoncé had to practically drag Solange away from Incubus’ Brandon Boyd at the Billboard Music Awards. “He’s so cute and talented. I got in a quick hug,” she says. And though her CD isn’t exactly the head-banging type, Solange did sneak in some raucous vibes. “I did a track called ‘This Song’s For You,’ which has big rock guitars.” Beyond Beyoncé indeed.- Laura Morgan (March 2002)
