let’s look at three of the major elements of akechi’s character:
- his unwavering fondness for his mother, as well as compassion for her circumstances
- his dedication to getting revenge on shido
- his ability to quickly, and accurately, assess people’s personalities and behavior within a few minutes of meeting them
he doesn’t hesitate to tell ren he doesn’t hold anything against his mother, not how atypical their living situation was, nor the work she had to do, nor that she gave birth to him at all. this shows he has understanding and compassion in matters where he and another person are put into painful circumstances; he exerts a level of compassion and understanding to her that he doesn’t give to himself.
he has made his entire modus operandi in life to dragging his piece of shit father down, first for what he did to akechi and his mother, and then also because of shido’s ambition to control the country–a country whose society akechi already loathed for how he and his mother were treated. he was alone, friendless, left to fend for himself and live years of lies and careful manipulation in order to hold his head above water. never once did he give up. never once did he waver. this shows that akechi is loyal almost to a fault, and most definitely to his own detriment. when he dedicates himself, he will not stray from that decision.
he can quickly read people, which is why he’s so eager to get to know ren (well one of the reasons–it’s just as likely he recognized ren from the metaverse at this point). he isn’t lying when he says that he finds ren interesting, or that he thinks ren will be a good influence(!), or that he’d find conversations with ren intellectually stimulating. akechi is the sort of person who talks out loud as he thinks, thinks extensively and carefully, and likely has to view situations from multiple angles not just for understanding’s sake, but for safety’s sake. he has a keen understanding of human behavior–how fickle the public can be, the level of fervid devotion his fans have for him, his repeated profiling of the personalities and motives of the phantom thieves. this means that akechi is observant and insightful, two traits that would make it easier for him to assess the needs or thoughts of whoever he’s talking to.
all of these traits–compassion, loyalty, attentive–are not only admirable, they are traits you’d want in a friend or a partner. they are traits that come naturally to akechi, are key foundations of his personality. now just think of how much someone like that would appeal to ren. ren, who is likewise compassionate, attentive, and dedicated. ren, who is loyal to what he sets his mind and heart to, and will not waver from it–unless, of course, it involves painful consequences to someone he cares about. none of us hesitate to point out how caring and relentlessly devoted ren is to his cause and his friends, yet i haven’t seen many people point to akechi and say, "and he’s the same, too.”
the only difference is, of course, akechi hasn’t had anyone to dedicate himself to besides a memory of his mother, and a concept (justice, revenge). it’s not until ren shows up that he can then extend that understanding, devotion, and attention to someone. and for ren, the difference here is that akechi is all these things together in a way none of the other PT are. they may have one or two traits, and perform them to varying degrees of success, but none of them have all three combined, consistently practiced, and given to him. if anything, he has to give it to them.
two sides, same coin. they balance and complete each other in ways no one else can. no one.
