Even though House MD is the show that introduced Hugh Laurie to the world, for me, his appearances in Blackadder are what propelled him to success in the UK and Europe.

Everyone's mentioning Hugh Laurie's roles in Blackadder the Third and Blackadder Goes Forth.
However, his roles in Blackadder II don't get much recognition and I feel they should.
In "Beer", he first played Simon Partridge or "Mr. Ostrich", a drunk who loved rude words with HL being very impressive even though his screen time was limited.
It was the next episode, "Chains" where HL took on the role of Prince Ludwig the Indestructible, a master of disguise who first began as a joke but by the end of the episode, fulfiled his ambitions but at the expense of the lives of Blackadder and his allies.
I'm not sure but I think Ludwig is HL's first ever villainous role.
Either way, for me, I think HL is at his acting best whenever he's playing villains.

I'm convinced that Hugh Laurie's comedy skills that we see being used during Blackadder helped him gain popularity with the various people around the world watching House MD.
Plus, we get to see those skills and timing during various House MD episodes.
