He was walking through those murders constantly now. On the periphery, he always caught the ghost of movement, a scarlet-tinged silhouette that receded in equal paces as he approached.
In an imagined field beside an imagined girl - the girl, the anti-schematic, the not- blueprint murder, the first manipulation - he felt it again at his side. Closer than before, the cuff of a jacket or the bristle of coarse fur brushing his own sleeve.
He held very still, but it was leaning closer and its breath against his jaw was warm and wet like something very freshly dead.
"This is my design.”
The words were ones that he had used dozens of times, but the inflection was possessive and the rolling vowels and barely-voiced consonants were not his own.
