mod announcement:

mod Camille has dropped off of tumblr for personal reasons, so for the last two weeks or so I have been trying to keep this blog updated on my own.  but I have to admit I’m not really putting that much into it, and I think I’m going to stop.  at least for a while.

this blog is several slots down on my priorities list.  I have two jobs that come first.  I manage two Twitter accounts and three Facebook pages which are much more rewarding than one small tumblr account.  in addition to that, I run three other tumblrs besides this one.  there’s just too much on my plate for me to be able to keep up with this anymore.

I’ll leave you with these last pieces of advice.  tumblr is not the greatest platform for socialist organizing.  if you want to organize, don’t pour all your energy into something on here.  join your local DSA chapter or start one.  or join another socialist club.  talk to people in your communities.  join a union.  and most importantly: stand up for those in your communities who are being attacked.  your Jewish neighbors need your solidarity.  your Muslim neighbors need your solidarity.  I’m not telling you all to quit tumblr entirely, but don’t let it be your only place of organizing.  there’s a whole world outside.  people need you out there.

fascism is not to be debated, it is to be smashed.

If you would report an undocumented immigrant to ICE you would have reported me to the Nazis and I don’t fucking trust you

A note:

I live in a state where you “have to” report anyone you suspect of being undocumented (that wonderful hellhole of Arizona). Now in practice this law has fallen far short, thank goodness. But if you live in such a place and they start enforcing it, here is how you get around it:

Assume everyone who doesn’t speak English is visiting.

Never ask about their job, because if they tell you they work here then you know they’re not visiting. You see them a lot for several weeks or months? Hm. Someone in the family must be ill. That’s terribly tough. They always dress in old, ratty laborers’ clothes? I feel you, my dude, I can’t afford new clothes either, and my dad has the fashion sense of an aardvark, so sometimes it’s not even about “affording” them. They say they’ve been here for years? You must have misunderstood. Spanish isn’t your first language, after all. First and last name? It never came up, or you don’t recall–you meet a lot of people.

And then, if you’re asked: no, you haven’t seen anyone residing illegally in the United States. Just people visiting.

Very good very important addition

Essentially, this is the civil society version of a work-to-rule strike.

Don’t do more than is expressly asked of you, and do what you are asked with such an intense attention to protocol that not asking you at all becomes more effective than even bothering.

In this case:

“Have you seen an illegal immigrant?”

“Could you describe an illegal immigrant, officer?”

*officer describes a person who is in the country without appropriate paperwork, or who has crossed the border illegally*

“No, sir, I haven’t seen any illegal immigrant.”

And this is correct. You have NOT seen an illegal immigrant, because you have no way of knowing if Jose Fulano is here legally or not. And since you can’t see his paperwork (or lack thereof), and did not personally see him cross the border illegally, you are only answering precisely the question asked.

I know it’s not hard to point out reactionaries hypocrisy when it comes to like safe spaces or hug boxes or whatever but genuinely how much of an echo chamber do you have to exist in for you to think this is a reasonable thing to say

reblog if attacking fascism is really the hill you want to die on

this is literally like one of the most justified and honorable hills you could die on??? lol??

this is absolutely the hill I will probably literally die on

and I wouldn’t have that any other way.

the ruling class: "I just don't understand why Bernie Sanders is still so popular with the American people!"
me: could it be because he's a genuinely nice person whose message resonates with a lot of Americans?
the ruling class: "I just don't know what it is!"
me: I think that's what it is.
the ruling class: "who knows?"
Narrator: "it was that."

Hid art. Made graffiti, smuggled out kids, hid people, preserved knowledge, and kept the truth out of the lies

Not everyone is built to be a fighter. And that’s okay. A war isn’t won by the infantry alone. We need support in this trying time as the great beast called Facism rises. Don’t tolerate intolerance. Stay angry. Stay together. Stay smart.

I can’t believe this needs to be said, but the rich are not doing you a service by employing you. They require you. Everything they have is contingent on the fact that you work for them and do what they say. Without you, the rich have literally nothing. Workers have power over the entire economy.

It is actually workers doing a major service to their employers by not unionizing and not starting a revolution, since literally the only thing workers need to do to grind the entire economy to a halt is put their hands behind their back and stop working. That is it. Workers could crash the entire machine in one moment if they wanted.

Stop calling them “job creators.” They aren’t. They literally require you. But you dont require them. You are wealth creators. And you have the power to take it back whenever you want. You just have to organize.

One of the most useful insights my father ever gave me was that “your employer owes you money”. At any given moment, you have done work that your employer has not yet written you a check for. They owe you money, and you owe them nothing

hey

the mcdonalds strike against sexual harassment is today

the point is to make the company see that their profits are generated by workers who they are refusing to protect and that they better start addressing sexual harassment or risk losing the cooperation of those workers

the worker’s cooperation only matters to the rich policy makers if a lack of it is destructive to profit, so their strike works better the less profit is made by the company while its occurring

don’t go to micky dee’s today. no one else is gonna help us so we just gotta get creative in demanding consequences for harassers and support each other in doing it

We are multiple generations now with no experience with strikes, and I see a lot of confused, well meaning people who want to help but don’t know strike etiquette.

1. Never cross a picket line of striking workers.

2. Never purchase or take free goods from a company who’s workers are striking

3. Honk to support strikers if you drive by a picket line.

4. Join strikers on the picket line even if it’s not your strike, but follow their directions and defer to them while there.

5. Say “that’s great, the strike is working, the company should negotiate with their workers” whenever someone complains about profits lost, inconveniences or other worker-phobic rhetoric. Always turn it back on the company, who has all the power and money.

Purchase I understand, but can someone explain the “free goods” part to me?

How do those free goods get to you if you’re not crossing a picket line?

Also companies generally seem to do that to draw attention away from the stike and keep their customer count up so the strike doesn’t work.

on the free goods thing, companies whose workers are striking will sometimes try to hand out free samples or throw big events to draw attention away from the strike (and to advertise for their company like they’re always doing.)

for example, the workers at the Four Roses Bourbon distillery and the Four Roses bottling plant in Kentucky are on strike right now.  Four Roses is having a big event tonight in Louisville.  the picket lines are not in Louisville, they’re outside the distillery and the bottling plant.

if people want to support the Four Roses strike, they should not buy Four Roses Bourbon while the strike is on, and they should also not go to that event Four Roses is holding. (unless they’re gonna stand outside it and protest. that would be a welcome action.)

boycotts are an important method of supporting a strike, but a boycott of a company means a boycott of everything the company is doing.  it doesn’t just mean you stop buying their products.  it means you stop going to events they hold, stop talking about them online unless you’re talking about the strike, stop giving the company your time.

I want other young people to understand that if the extent of your radical action is posting “eat the rich!” on social media and waiting for somebody to tell you a revolution has started, nothing will change and you’ll get arrested in the Third Red Scare and that’ll be it

What’s the plan?

Join a local trade union and the IWW. Join or start a local tenant’s union. Volunteer with Food Not Bombs and do other mutual aid in your community. Support your local solidarity economy and maker community. Build, fix, and grow stuff. Use free, open-source software and stop letting companies sell your data. Pirate stuff. Break unjust laws. Attend local actions

And most importantly, join radical groups in your area. Strength is found in numbers and none of us can change the world alone. If you need help finding your local movement, DM me and I’ll look around for you so you can start getting stuff done

Would like to again remind everybody that, as a history grad student specializing in US history, the Left really is literally bigger in the United States right now than it has been in 100 years and people need to stop underestimating how big of a deal that is. DSA has over 50,000 members now and it is growing at a rapid pace. Self-declared socialists are going to the US House of Representatives. Anarchists occupied ICE facilities all over the country. There is a massive prison strike going on.

This is big. There is absolutely no reason to be defeatist.

We winning the long game here
