How Zerith Ticks The Romance Genre

Written for @zerith-week Day 2 — Dating/Kisses
The rule of thumb is, FINAL FANTASY VII is not a romance story. This was accentuated by the ending of the original game where Hironobu Sakaguchi, who was the producer and created the story concept of the original game had said; "And what happened to the characters? It doesn't really matter, after all. It's their growth through the content of the game, though important. The main story of FINAL FANTASY VII is the battle for Planet. Focusing on each character would have distracted from the most important themes. Nothing is more important than a Planet. Nothing is more important than life."
Despite that, Zack and Aerith had been portrayed to have a romantic relationship from the get go. Aerith had mentioned Zack as her first love, and Zack had written to his parents about a girlfriend. Not to mention the numerous times the NPC in Crisis Core had addressed Aerith as his girlfriend as common knowledge, and Zack Fair Fanclub visiting Aerith upon the announcement of him being KIA in a mission as an act of condolences to the deceased's girlfriend. In the story compilation of FINAL FANTASY VII, we did get some love stories; Cloud and Tifa, Cid and Shera, and also... Zack and Aerith.
So how was Zack and Aerith shown to be a romance?
Tracy Wolff, a New York Times bestselling author had said; "Writing an emotionally compelling love story is all about the connection between your characters. The emotional payoff only happens when you've stoked the flames between them as high as the stakes that should be keeping them apart." And while there isn't one specific way to drive the point home, these bestselling authors had listed general rules to create this romance in stories, compiled by J. Kenner in "How to Write Romance Scenes; Ultimate Guide for Romance Authors", which had impressively projected on the love story of Zack and Aerith.
1. Start with attraction.
Even enemies-to-lovers story, there needs to be an attraction, a spark. Zack and Aerith are not an exceptional to this rule during their meet cute. The meet cute is the term for the inciting incident in a romance that sets the tone for the entire story. It had been well-known that when Zack first saw Aerith, he was attracted to her to the point of calling her an angel. He proposed a date to her not because she reminded him of someone but because he was attracted—okay, that was half joking lol. But anyway, this is really self-explanatory. Zack is a ladies-man. He’s not some kinda aloof guy who would hold back his flirting when he saw a girl he was attracted to. And Aerith is not a shy girl. She was also shown to be attracted to the guy when the game showed how her eyes followed his every movements since he doubled back up. She even admitted that she wanted to spend more time with him. Zack also tried to look cool by showing his strength against some monsters, and Aerith wasn't buying it. They share the same sense of humour that magnetizes them towards one another. We got some nice teasing and flirting scene back and forth which became the dynamic of their relationship onwards. But there was still an emotional gap between them here. When Aerith mentioned he was strong, and Zack thought about what was happening with Angeal, he felt deflated. He didn't immediately share what he was thinking with Aerith despite her asking, and that was realistic considering they have just met. Both of them are vocal about their initial attraction, even if the emotional bond has not formed yet. Not to mention their aesthetic and height difference make them look good together, but let's not go there. lol.
2. Building chemistry and dynamic.
Someone once commented that Zack and Aerith fell in love within ten minutes and then they only had cute moments with no development. This is false. The attraction and spark were there within the first ten minutes. The bond was built through time. Through each scene, their observations of one another get deeper and more intimatein a non-high-five way lol. But as I pointed out earlier, FINAL FANTASY VII is not a love story, thus the proportion of the romance being told becomes secondary or even tertiary to the plot. If you’re expecting a love story, FINAL FANTASY VII is not your game. However, we are still being fed with how Zack and Aerith gradually get to know each other. They went for a walk-turned-date, and Zack learned that Aerith loves pink ribbons and scolds people who stepped on flowers. She opened up about being scared of the sky. Zack also learned that Aerith is actually people-smart when she told him that the kid who pick-pocketed him didn't do it without reason. Aerith learned that Zack is actually troubled beneath all the jokes he cracked. And how he was willing to listen to her insecurities when she mentioned her fears. Subsequently they spent time together, getting to know each other better. They also called each other frequently to the point that she interrupted him pre-fight amidst missions. You see, Aerith didn't fall in love with Zack because he was cool, or because he was a perfect prince charming. She fell in love with him because he was a messed-up goof, non-judgemental, and way too caring for his own good. Zack fell in love with Aerith not because she was a Cetra or a Gainsborough or whatever privilege she possessed. He fell for her because she was a quirky girl who likes flowers and ribbons who empathised and helped around the kids in her sector. They chipped off the outer layer of each other and dug deep into their most vulnerable selves—Zack when he opened up to Aerith during his lowest point in his life never caring about being a cool guy, and her with her fear of sky and her insecurity of being different. That's when they finally fell in love. Aerith did not wait for 5 years and wrote 89 letters because of a guy she had a crush on. She did all that for a guy she had learn to love over the course of 18 months, whom she finally revealed the most vulnerable wish she could bravely entrusted to him; her 23 tiny wishes, all so that she gets to spend more time with him.
3. Emotional/internal conflict that build the tension.
Conflicts are important in story building. This includes hinting at any emotional wounds or baggage, and showing how falling in love might heal them. In romance, there are two main conflicts that make up good stories. One of them is Internal Conflict in which would build the tension between the two partners. Aerith and Zack are not normal people. Aerith is a Cetra. Zack is a superhuman SOLDIER. They both had eccentricities, Aerith probably more than Zack. But it was her Cetra heritage that held Aerith back. Her traumatic experience of watching Ifalna getting suspicious drugs and doing shady things to get them out of Shinra had her built up a defence mechanism to avoid the glaring problems right in front of her eyes. It manifested in their relationship in a way. There was this awkward push and pull on Aerith's side the first time they met because she was hesitant if Zack would accept her for who she is. It was a highlight of Aerith's insecurities that made her long for Zack but wary of his attraction at the same time. But she grew out of it while being with him. Slowly but surely, she expressed herself more, she gets bolder; her fears, her kind of wagon she wanted while still being mindful of him. She attempted some carefree conversation for a bit when Zack cried—her usual defence mechanism—but they showed how she knew him enough to recognise that wasn't what he needed, and she proceeded to give him a hug. They supported each other through their fears and lows. Their love healed each other. She was the best version of herself when she was with Zack. Caring, outgoing, sassy, but still empathetic. Zack, on the other hand, found out about Aerith's internal conflict from Cissnei. Aerith never told anyone about it, because she had been lying to herself to seek comfort in normalcy. Interestingly enough, she didn't need to. The minute he found out, he was only like "okay, so, anyway—". For Zack, she was still one of a kind, Cetra or not. It is the kind of scene where, in the case if Aerith finds out about it, her love for him would only deepen. It is his understanding and acceptance that makes their love that much sweeter. If this reveal happened earlier in their relationship, it would probably create a wedge between them. But their bond had been cemented, no ancestry was relevant to how they view each other by this point. Behind those walls, they were just Zack and Aerith, two ‘normal’ people who love and support each other unconditionally, giving comfort and hope for freedom and future, with no ulterior motive. And that was how their relationship grew as the game progressed.
4. External conflict that separated the lovers.
External conflicts work as the actual reason the lovers became separated. A realistic obstacle outside of the relationship that keeps them apart, driving the actions and plot of the two characters. The factors that keep the characters apart are important to make people root for them to get together. Most of this external conflicts for Zerith came from Zack's side, in contrast to their internal conflicts which mostly were Aerith's. Angeal's death, Zack reprimanding Tseng for tailing Aerith after knowing she was a Cetra, that foreboding when Zack had to be deployed to Nibelheim... Aerith asked when he'll be back and if she could call Zack during that mission even if it was constantly her routine in previous missions and it had never been a problem. The foreshadowing of their tragedy; building flower wagons and selling flowers, as if to savour every last seconds they had together. We have this bittersweet but equally heartbreaking scene when Aerith told Zack that she had fun even if they weren't selling well because he was there with her. Zack, too, entrusted Aerith to Tseng despite his vocal complaint about it before. The build-up of their separation was imminent. And then it happened. They were separated for good. What's unique and beautiful about Zerith's external conflict though, is the fact that neither of them were at fault for the separation or miscommunication. Aerith tried to reach out to him. Zack tried to get back to her. They both did their parts to their very best. It's just that their external conflict was too huge, it prevented their message from reaching each other.
5. Happily ever after.
This one is a bit tricky. Because we all know that Zerith is a tragic couple. However, here's the thing. Even a tragic romance has some sort of a happy ending—something to follow through the 'Downfall'. It is called the Perspective/Reflection. The story needs to put the tragedy into perspective, not let the Downfall go all the way down. The best example I could think of is Nicholas Sparks's romance novels, such as "Best of Me", when they had spent the time they lost and had their closure, the hero accepted the fatal fate he should've gotten earlier. And the heroine, despite heartbroken, becomes a better mother, better partner, and she moved on with a bittersweet memory. There is a hopeful glimpse of the character moving on or a montage of memories as they reflect on the loss. It should not end by making the living lover go around flower fields to take commemorative photos endlessly—okay, that referenced joke was uncalled for, sorry. But this is what Zerith had in spades. The Downfall of their romance was their separation, the failure to reunite, the grief that Aerith would never see her lover again. But what is the perspective after their tragedy? What is the resolution or reflection of their relationship? And this had been answered beautifully in Advent Children, bringing the romance story between Zack and Aerith into full circle, completing the criteria of writing a love story. The fact that they had reunite, walking out of the church together, with a full knowledge that they accepted their fate, and they stayed by each other's sides in the Lifestream, always. Later accentuated by Aerith’s yellow flowers blooming on Zack’s resting place, and Zack’s Buster Sword placed in the Sector 5 church where they spent the most time together, as if to tell us they have the eternity together.
Conclusion
In a way, Perspective/Reflection is the tragic romance's version of happily ever after, not in a fairy tale way, but more convoluted that leaves us satisfied with the culmination of the romantic relationship, in an odd way. The type that wrenches our hearts and keeps us thinking about them for days even. Ending on this note however, I do believe that the developers are not actually done with the Zerith's Perspective/Reflection. They had their Downfall—their fate was predestined to be separated, to be star-crossed. But such is the mystery in Remake, something they enunciated to be something to look forward to in Rebirth.
So is Zerith poorly written?
I'd say, according to the standards of the New York Times Bestselling Authors, they're pretty damn well-written considering FINAL FANTASY VII is not a love story, and they're not even the main pairing. But the important plot points and pivoting events to bring their relationship forward are included. They got their own beginning, their own conflict, their own dynamic, and their own ending. Their love and passion are explored from the superficial attraction down to the deep subconscious connection that made us turn our heads just by having them passing by each other.
In short, they ticked the boxes of romance recipes authors go for.
And with that, I wish a Happy Zerith Week 2022 to all Zerith nation. With Crisis Core Reunion and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth coming soon, let's rejoice and celebrate this well-written romance and buckle our seatbelts for more of their tear-jerking adventure!
Among the cast, Aeris is exceptional. This isn’t a matter of her heritage or her ability, however exceptional those might also be, but a matter of her outlook. By motif, Aeris is a “flower blooming in the slums,” something hopeful and tenacious and a little bit miraculous. She has grown up in bleak surroundings with an abundance of personal pain, and it certainly has an effect on her, but unlike much of the cast, she refuses to let it corrode her.
The thing to understand about Aeris is that she is not primarily kind. She’s certainly not unkind, but it’s not kindness that is her defining trait, the unique thing about her that insulates her from the darkness around her. Rather, it’s her ability to look forward with faith and inward with honesty. While the rest of AVALANCHE leaves Midgar with vengeance in mind, Aeris’ pain drives her to self-discovery. She feels her emotions without indulging in their negativity, and gets impatient with other characters (Cloud with his constant fretting or Barret when he’s lashing out) when they don’t do the same. She wants to understand herself and her history and how to carry on, questions that the rest of the cast eventually arrive at long after she’s gone, and questions that prove to be fundamentally self-healing to explore.
She does, however, insist on going through this process alone. It’s in her proclivity for self-isolation and secret-keeping that we see the way growing up “different” in a way that took her in and out of Shinra’s labs had a profound impact on her. Though she’s very friendly and usually very forthcoming with her opinions, her deepest and darkest are things she always tries to carry by herself. She’s the one character who never lays things out for us - her backstory is recounted to us by Elmyra, and she doesn’t share with us what she’s learned about the White Materia, or the details of her parentage. Her thoughts on her heritage become more sparse the more she learns about it.
Part of why she hides so many personal details must be habit born of prudence - it wouldn’t help her evade Shinra to go around telling everybody, after all - but I think that as much as she wants to understand herself and her legacy, she wants as well to be seen as normal and not exceptional. Exceptional killed her mother and saw her trapped in a lab for the formative years of her life, yes, but it’s also something vast that always risks drowning out the rest of who she is as a person. She may be an Ancient, but she is also herself, and she seems to want to be so authentically.
Characters like this, who hide the weight of their great cosmic destiny but seem cheerful on the outside, are often revealed to be hiding their struggle behind a smile. I think this is never the case with Aeris. Fierce independence and occasionally foolhardy confidence are character traits that go hand in hand with a desire to explore and experience the world around her as well as the world within. She seizes on whatever adventure is put in front of her, whether that’s flirting with the mysterious stranger that just fell through her roof or insisting on having a good time at the amusement park when they’re supposed to be hunting Sephiroth. The vibrance she shows through all of it is deeply genuine, and Tifa is right in more ways than one when she says that Aeris very much wanted to live.
Aerith in light of healthcare provider
So, I've wanted to write an analysis about Aerith in light of her medical viewpoint for quite a long time but only recently got the chance to complete it. It is well known in the game that Aerith is the healer of the story. She possesses a great MP with a limit break to heal and buff people which greatly affects your gameplay. Of course, you can equip others with Healing and Prayer materias to render them useful for healing as well. But story-wise, no one can take away Aerith's status as the healer. We know in canon that Aerith provided herbs to the Sector 5 slums doctor to create medicine. And if you finished the Corneo Stash side quest in Chapter 14, you can return to the church and see a couple of elderly sitting on the pew praying. And when you come closer to them you'll hear them talking about how they didn't see Aerith around and they're sure she's alright and probably be around healing people. You know, since the Sector 7 plate just fell. (Even though Aerith is not alright actually coz she was kidnapped by Shinra by this time) Point is, we are fed by the NPCs on how much Aerith had helped around as a healer. She had been doing this for years.
While being in denial about who she actually is, being a healer had always been implanted in her. She is used to it. When you're used to being a healer, there's a certain level when you have a different reaction compared to others. The way you think is different. Apart from that, she's also a Cetra. And we knew for a fact Cetra had a certain affinity towards souls who are returning to the Planet. Meaning, as much as she is used to healing others, she's also used to sensing death.
My whole point is that being a Cardiac Anaesthesiologist and Intensivist as I am, I can totally relate my position with Aerith, as we both have constantly helped people and encounter death on daily basis. While I'm pretty confident that the majority of these might be coincidences (because I'm pretty sure there are no doctors in the SE team), I thought the coincidences are pretty cool to ponder upon and I'm amazed at how the subtle differences between Aerith's reaction to events from other characters.
I'm gonna ignore the meta part of Aerith, mainly because I'm not discussing how much Aerith knew, and if there was anything in jeopardy of what she knew whatsoever. So we're gonna focus on the fact that she is used to healing and feeling people's death. People who are used to death on daily basis had a certain unique view on life and death. And that affects how we act upon facing them too. While this is evident throughout Remake, I'm gonna focus on the plate drop event to be more concise. I will also use Tifa as a comparison to make it easier to see the difference between the reaction of the two. Let’s start!
1) Aerith is quick in emergency situations.
- When you are used to people dying, you developed a certain immunity and you are able to have a sound mind and composure at the sudden change of event. As healthcare providers, we face stable situations turning into critical real fast. And we have a switch in our minds that turns us from standby mode to rescue mode. This is exactly what happened to Aerith when Don Corneo revealed Shinra's plan to blow up Sector 7's support pillar. Tifa is part of Sector 7. It is her home. Which is why her reaction showed how she was super devastated, she slowly stood up and muttered "They wouldn't..." because she couldn't believe it. Aerith? She had that switch in her mind, and she immediately turned and say "Come on, guys! We gotta go!". She switched into that critical mode in a second. It helps that she's also not personally connected to Sector 7, and thus her judgment was not as impaired. Of course, they both switched into the critical mode in the sewer, but it was at the moment of revelation that made it different. Just like how healthcare providers switched at the moment of revelation that their patients are at the brink of death—you immediately jumped into rescue mode.
2) She plans for the worst.
- Remember after they defeated Abzu and Tifa started to question Corneo's information? She didn't want to believe it, because it didn't make sense to destroy your years of efforts building the plate just to get back to a small group like AVALANCHE. Think about the money they put in to build it, they're gonna have to put them all again. In fact, along their way out of the sewer, Tifa voiced out multiple times how this had been bothering her. But I'm intrigued with Aerith's reply "If he's telling the truth, then we should go. And if it turns out he was lying, then so what?". This here is exactly what doctors do. We plan and prepare for the worst. And if the worst didn't happen, then so what? If you ever had life-saving surgery, your doctors would tell you "You need this surgery coz you might die. But if you do the surgery, there's a high chance you'll survive, but there's a small chance you'll die too". And we prepare for that small chance that our patients die. No, we don't let our preparations lacking because we hope they'll survive. We prepare for the worst outcome possible and get all the equipment ready in case they'll die. If they didn't, then so what? It doesn't mean our preparations were futile efforts. It only means we were prepared. And that line of Aerith seriously hits home to me.
3) She hopes for the best.
- Before they crossed the water sewer, Tifa once again voiced out how she couldn't stop thinking about what Corneo said, and she was still hoping that he was lying. And then Aerith said, "The future isn't set in stone". (Again, I'm gonna ignore the meta part of Aerith) And then she proceeded to set up that small date with Tifa. Believe it or not, this is actually what we do during bad calls. We'd talk about what we would do after all this ends; we'd go out dining, or playing games/darts, or go drinking, or whatever it is that makes us happy. Just to keep our minds calm and to allow us to hope for the future, even if it's just a few hours away. It gives us hope and courage to go on. We plan for the worst, but we hope for the best. The more critical the situation is, the more you need to be level-headed. And needless to say, after this point onwards, Tifa is much more calmed down from her struggle to keep herself focus.
4) She follows orders.
- This might sound weird to some, but the ability to cast away your worry and focus on what you can do, instead of what you should do, is important in emergency situations. You need to know what you don't know. You don't get in the way of your comrades. If you're not good at intubating, you don't insist to intubate in emergency situations just because you wanna help. Seriously, you'll just make things worse. When Cloud, Tifa, and Aerith were attacked before climbing up and out of the sewer, Cloud asked both Tifa and Aerith to keep going. Aerith immediately answers "Okay" and left—without a single but. This is significant because it shows that Aerith knew she'd be better off leaving. She doesn't need to offer help, coz her help was not needed. This is not the place where she could help. The ability to recognize this is very important for healthcare professionals. Tifa was a bit more reluctant to leave, but that's probably because she is a martial artist in-game. Also, the fact that Aerith could still joke "We're not delicious" is just so real lol! Yup, we joke sometimes when we're facing deaths—doesn't mean we lose focus in saving the dying person in front of us, don't worry. And then it happens again when they reached Sector 7 when Cloud asked them to stay with Wedge as he goes up, Aerith immediately answered "sure"—because she can "patch" Wedge up, it's where her abilities lie. This is even more accentuated when an injured Wedge argued that he can still fight when he clearly can't—making this point even more obvious. Aerith is someone with a healthcare mind, Wedge was not.
5) She supports her comrades emotionally even when she’s worried too.
- When they reached the surface, they spotted a Shinra helicopter. Cloud assured them they're only on patrol. Aerith turned to Tifa and said, "Don't worry, we'll make it in time". This moment is also very iconic to me. As I mentioned, I'm an anaesthesiologist. We are the support doctors to surgeons and physicians. Those moments when we're operating on AAA surgeries and the patient is losing liters of blood and literally dying, we're pumping bloods in with our hands and get those Level 1 machines operating, and the surgeons would be panicking because it keeps bleeding? Yep, I did say it before. "We'll make it. Just concentrate on the surgery and don't worry about the bleeding", even though I'm sweating and dying here trying to keep the patient alive. But I pretended to be calm in front of my team and cheered them on. Because the whole team needs to keep calm. If one of the team loses hope, then bid your chance farewell. As an anaesthesiologist, we're almost like the anchor in the room. People look at us to know if everything's alright. I need to tell them it's alright, so they need not worry. Aerith knew Tifa is worried. And she tried to keep Tifa calm with reassurance. Even if she probably freaked out herself.
6) She doesn’t discriminate.
- After they defeated the ghost at the haunted maintenance facility, Cloud tried to kill it, and Aerith didn't let him. When Cloud said that thing was dangerous, Aerith said she knows and added "but even so..." she didn't feel right about killing it. (Let's ignore the fact that the Ghoul was a lonely creature for now) It then goes to drop the train wreck which almost killed them had it not been for Cloud. Now this would have been avoided had Aerith let Cloud killed it—maybe. But here's the thing. When you're hyper-aware that people are dying left and right, you value life more. No one deserves to die, even the worst criminal in the world. You're a law-abiding citizen? You're a criminal? It doesn't make a difference to us. I know this is something super hard to comprehend. But technically only when the law subjects the criminal to the death sentence that a person should be left to die. I've been a doctor for eleven years, I was a prison doctor for two. I had the first-hand experience of dealing with criminals. It's not my job to determine whether they deserve to die or not. It's not my call whether they will turn a new leaf had they lived. I know this is something others find difficult to relate to and agree with—happens to my non-medical family and friends. The verdict to us is simple. It's a life. It's worth saving. Period. (Technically the ghosts are dead though but my point still stands)
7) She tries to her best abilities and lets go of what is out of her control.
- Tifa's emotions are tampered with again when they confirmed Shinra was going to drop the plate when they overheard the Turks conversation. Her voice shook, we can literally hear it. Aerith's response was "all we can do now is keep moving". And she's right. When they reached Sector 7 and the Whispers were preventing them, she said "we have to get past whatever it takes". And later on, Tifa left to help Cloud and Barret, and Aerith agreed to get to Seventh Heaven to ensure Marlene's safety. Wedge had a short mental breakdown when he realized he was no good to anyone up or down the crime scene. And Aerith told him "We can still save a lot of lives", "That's no excuse to give up", "I need to know I did everything I could". Her encouragement helped Wedge save more people. Some argued, did she not care about the lives that already died? Now here's my point; no, we don't. Sorry if this sounds harsh, but really. What can we do for people who are already dead? Nothing. What can we do for people who are still alive? Everything. And this is the core of being a healthcare provider—we prioritize. Yes, we're also humans. We can get emotional when our own friends and relatives die. (Aerith might not be as calm had it happened at Sector 5) But when we put the healthcare provider cap on, we mean business. That is why when disasters happened, and we triage people with a black tag? That's when we know we couldn't do anything for them. We don't mourn at the black tags. We move on to the other tags instead. So that we know we already did everything in our power to help. And yes, it doesn't matter even if we lost more lives than we saved. It's worth it, even if we only saved one person out of thousands of deaths. Just like how Aerith saved Betty in Sector 7. That one life is worth it.
Title: From A to Z Summary: From A to Z. From Aerith to Zack. Throughout the 18 months of their relationship, Zack brought back a variety of flowers for Aerith so that she could see the world the way he did. Aerith would reply in the same kind, telling him what they meant so that he could see the world in her view as well. I love these scenes with her so much!
FFVII Crisis Core | An email from Zack’s fan club
Aerith was never afraid of the sky, but what it meant
When Aerith last saw the sky, she was above the plate as Aerith-the-Cetra. The only existence she’d ever known was her imprisonment in the Shinra labs… a life of constant fear and loneliness. When her powers “awakened,” Aerith struggled and failed to control her confusing Cetra powers under threat of her mother’s life–and her attempts to save her mother’s life resulted in the deaths of others. As a young child, Aerith quickly learned that her Cetra identity was isolating, confusing, and dangerous to herself and others. (Source: “Picturing the Past” from the FFVIIR World Preview Book; fan translation here, fan summary here.)
But as soon as Aerith was taken in by Elmyra, she became Aerith-of-the-Sector-5-slums. Under the confines of the plate and sealed away from the sky, Aerith could become a girl who ran freely outside, chattered away with her adoptive mother, and felt safe–finally, Aerith could pretend to be a normal girl. But still, only pretend–Aerith knew that her harsh life before the slums was always nearby, waiting to pull her back. So is it such a surprise that Aerith is afraid of “seeing the sky” and remembering her time before the slums, of being “sucked back in?” Afraid of leaving the safety of the skyless slums and becoming Aerith-the-Cetra once more?
Knowing this, it’s easy to see these sentiments in Aerith and Zack’s full conversation:
Z: It’s kinda stuffy down here. […] I know what it is! You can’t see the sky. A: Who wants to see the sky? I don’t, that’s for sure. Z: Wouldn’t you normally miss seeing the sky if you lived under a plate all year round? A: I guess I’m not normal. Z: You want to talk about it? A: The sky frightens me. I feel like it’s sucking me in. Weird, huh? Z: Normal is overrated. A: Think so? Z: I have an idea! One day, I’ll take you to see a beautiful sky, the real sky. A: (turns away uncomfortably) Z: It’s not frightening at all. I know you’re gonna love it.
(Source: English CC script, Chapter 5)
(It’s touching how after only a few hours of knowing each other, Zack can already sense her unease and does his best to comfort her.)
The themes of this conversation carry into their date at the playground. While the English script has the line “normal is best,” this popular fan sub uses stronger language:
A: I think being normal is the greatest happiness.
(Source: this popular fan sub)
More than anything, Aerith thinks being normal–not being a Cetra, not being who she truly is–is the key to happiness. So much so that she thinks SOLDIERs are “weird” for choosing to give up normality. She even goes on to confide her true thoughts on SOLDIERs–they love to fight, and that frightens her.
It’s a testament to the depth of Aerith’s and Zack’s bond that she doesn’t run away when Zack confesses that he is a SOLDIER, one of those people that should terrify her.
But Aerith’s willingness to reconsider her long-held beliefs is an even greater testament to her trust in Zack and her own open-heartedness. In just a few short hours, Zack proved himself to be goodhearted, kind, and honorable–someone she would never feel afraid with, nevermind afraid of.
If Aerith was wrong about the aggressiveness of SOLDIER… then what else is she wrong about? Is she wrong about the unnaturalness of choosing to become SOLDIER? Is she wrong to value normalcy so highly? Is she wrong to be afraid of the sky and her own Cetra heritage?
When Aerith looks into Zack’s eyes to face her fears–of SOLDIER, being different, the sky–she is struck by how beautiful they are. She accepts these things and loses her fear of them because they’re part of him. And this helps her accept the corresponding parts of her–being Cetra, being different, the current danger of her heritage presents.
A: So beautiful. Z: My face? A: (giggles) No, your eyes. Z: Do you like ‘em? If that’s so, then look at them some more. Eyes filled with mako… signs of a SOLDIER. A: Oh, stop it. Z: Haha. If you look into them it looks like you can see the sky, doesn’t it? A: If it’s that sky I’m looking at then I’m not scared at all! Z: …But it’s true that there’s nothing normal about me. Aerith, you don’t have a problem with that, do you? A: (laughs) I wondered if today would be a peaceful one? I didn’t think to myself, “Today a SOLDIER will drop from the sky.” Z: It wasn’t such a bad thing. A: Yeah.

Zack and Aerith’s date is poignant in that it seals their undeniable connection–not even Aerith’s justifiable fears could separate them. But the significance of the scene lies in how Aerith’s bond with Zack forces her to reevaluate the snap judgments she made due to those fears… and as a result, become more accepting of Zack’s and her own true self.

Please consider this my humble (and late!) offering for zerith week - day 4: clear blue sky. While I know it’s not the typical post, I love their relationship and how they help each other grow. 💞
If We Never Meet Again
As Zack and Aerith exchange their parting words before the Nibelheim mission, she asks him a troubling question. Her request isn’t big enough to change fate—and yet it changes everything.

For @zerith-week 2021 Day 1: Church.
Five years later and she’s still wearing the bow Zack bought her
About Aerith, Her Promisedland: And A Little Issue I have With Some Ideas In This Fandom.
The idea that Aerith died without ever moving on from Zack and acting like if she had moved it this means she doesn't love him.
Moving on is actually the best thing for Aerith. Loving someone new is the best thing too. Because that's part of her ARC. That she was so stuck in the past she denied his death.
That's not healthy. The reason Cloud snaps her out of it is because it's deju vu but not quite she realized he isn't actually Zack. The situation is different.
And that these feelings that she has are not some betrayal but just the beginning of something new and that it's perfectly okay.
Now she can grieve properly because she is longer holding on to her denial. Now she can face her feelings for Zack without anything in the way now she can explore her feelings for Cloud and figure out exactly what that means for herself.
Now ironically she can live her life.
Ironically she doesn't get to.
But she is freed from her denial and being stuck in the past and her conflicted feelings before she does.
And it's a bit cruel you know?
That because of a ship people don't want that for her.
They say it's cruel if Cloud stays stuck in the illusion.
Well yes and it's equally cruel if Aerith if Aerith does too. If she never resolves her feelings for Zack. Never admits her feelings about Cloud.
And just dies with no resolution.
What the heck kinda arc ends with the character exactly where they started? Aerith starts off not over Zack. That's why she is still in denial.
So you really expect her important realization to end with her... Stillll not being over Zack?
Never moving on then dying?
Wow, what a beautiful arc. She has feelings for this guy only because he is like her dead boyfriend because she's in denial of her boyfriend being dead. And she is denial because she isn't over him. Then she REALIZED she isn't over him! Dun dun dunnn then she died.
Yep. That's all there is to it.
No.
Aerith's denial stems from the fact she isn't over Zack. To resolve her denial she needs to face this. And the way she faces this is by being confronted with new feelings that bring forth a conflict. She feels it's unfair if she moves on so the story forces her to move on.
That's her personal internal arc.
So yeah just like with Cloud never regaining himself
it's equally cruel if she never gets to get out of her denial.
It's equally cruel if she stays stuck just because it's so much more convenient that way.
Sure her feelings for Cloud are conflicted and messy and based on just on the current moment but guess what? Feelings ARE exactly that. Conflicted. Contradictory. Messy. Not logical.
And that's just part of being alive.
Aerith moving on from Zack is not a sign she doesn't love him. Aerith having feelings for Cloud is not a sign she loves Cloud more or Zack less.
How can it be? She just met him. But that doesn't make her feelings chopped liver either, it's just the beginning of new feelings.
And it's very mono aware. And it's fine if they're unrequited all she needs is that, the will to move on. The incentive to love again.
Which she basically does before her time is up.
And nothing about that is a threat to her relationship with Zack. Zack who wouldn't want her to be stuck forever. And nothing about that is a threat to Cloud's relationship with Tifa, Cloud who has had feelings for Tifa since forever.
And in the end of it all she returned to the place where her soulmate was. She gets REUNITED with Zack by facing this conflict. The LifeStream being the Promisedland. Zack was there and she ironically could only be reuinited after this realization.
The Promised Land in Gnostic lore and Jewish Kabbalah being Final Heaven/one with god and the source which YOU CAN'T REACH if something is tethering your soul and keeping it out of balance. For example your complete denial of your feelings and holding on to the dead to point you deny they're dead?
So yeah. Aerith moves on because that is what her arc is about.
Acceptance. Acceptance of who she is, acceptance of her heritage, acceptance of her feelings for Cloud, acceptance of her love for Zack, acceptance of what must be done.
Her arc in terms of Tifaret pulls Gevurah towards Chesed. Strength towards Unconditional Love towards humankind and through her sacrifice for her new friend she saves the world.
A journey that she must first accept.
And in that acceptance she returns to the Promised Land. Is once again reunited with her love and continued on as protector of the Planet.
As the Cetra's journey also goes.
And no ship analysis can ever fully cover the extent of how meaningful that really is for her as a character.
