am I listening to The Crane Wives because I feel sad about Owen Carvour, or do I feel sad about Owen Carvour because I'm listening to The Crane Wives?
listening to this on loop and thinking about the character because apparently I hate myself
dog-coded Owen songs
pre-fall:
post-fall:
once again deeply upset about this as an Owen song (pre-fall and post-fall in different ways)
I cannot get this song out of my head goddamn you Clark Baxtresser you've done it again
making dinner (an entire bag of pizza rolls) and listening to this and crying because I have a curse inside me
One unfortunate truth about me is that I would sell a kidney to hear Joey Richter do a straight cover of this song
HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT
This Could Be on Broadway is finally on Spotify!!!
my curtwen playlist is a disorienting place, these are the last five songs on shuffle
It took me a solid month and a half of work, but uh. I really do love this chapter. I know writing a series people leave comments at different points in each section, but if you like this chapter I would really love to hear about it, because it's sort of a different direction and I'm genuinely curious whether I made it work or not
Also mind the rating please!!
Here's some silly extras in case anyone is interested in stuff like that
First, I got so excited to post that I neglected to shoutout @uhhhitsme! Which is unacceptable. I had two just... extremely rough transition sections that delayed things, and I knew they weren't right but was too burnt out to figure out why, and Mars really helped me talk through character motivations and listened to my lowkey mental breakdowns until I understood what I had to do, so thank you Mars!!
Okay, now vibes songs:
For the conversation section (I did listen to the original Edith Piaf version too but Jo Stafford is my girl)
And for the inside the boat section:
(If anyone is familiar with the music video for Work Song some of that imagery might be familiar)
The mid 1950s is the heyday of the Catalina sport set, so I had a lot of fun picking out historical outfits because I am a nerd:
Now, fun fact about me is that my dad actually worked at a marina doing fiberglass repair for most of my childhood, so I have been on several mid-sized yachts despite growing up poor as shit. If y'all remember the warehouse from TNOY chapter 1, I've actually been in boat repair warehouses too (I cut like three paragraphs about winches)
Speaking of yacht, the one I use for this chapter is based on this 1953 Chris-Craft model (but like. imagine it is decorated in a normal way)
If you're thinking to yourself "hey how did that work?" regarding certain aspects of the interior I would encourage you to uhhh shut up and go with it. I'm a writer, not a spacial awareness haver
Oh! Also here's a picture of the night sky over the Mediterranean (had to dig through so much AI slop to find real pictures you have no idea)
And shoutout to this chapter for teaching me about the Bortle scale (measuring how visible the stars are against light pollution)
Oh! And gardenias and red amaranth! In Victorian floriography, gardenias can be used to represent "secret love" and amaranth can be used to represent immortality or undying affection. (gay) spies never die babyyy
oh no I'm having Owen Carvour feelings again
Having a good. And normal. Time. Yes. Good and normal emotion time
Partner comes out, blocks the computer, says "I have a curtwen song for you" and then I hear this:
I love this song because it's a classic, but also because its a song about being so horned up over someone that you give yourself a tummy ache
surgically remove these men from my mind please god
Its very funny to me that this is the song I'm writing to, considering the almost nonexistent amount of work they do in this chapter
