November, 1918
It was another long day at the hospital. Not another overnight, but still long. You had an hour to go for your time, as you checked the clock. You headed over to make sure there was a glass of water on each bedside table.
It was simple training. It didn’t take long to get a First Aid and Home Nursing certification. They gave you a uniform of a white cap, a dark dress, and a white apron with a red cross stitched over the chest. Your first days as a VAD were full of fixing cups of tea and changing sheets.

“Can’t I at least scratch my arm! It’s beginning to itch!” you teased, though you did feel an itch on your arm.
It was a peaceful late afternoon. James had returned from work. When he announced himself, you immediately ran over to throw your arms around him and kiss him, something he enjoyed. As he changed into his everyday clothes, he asked if he could draw you. You agreed.
The sun was setting with its orange glow melting through the windows. You felt it behind you as the red curtains tickled you and the sunlight warmed your back. The inside of the sitting room looked lovely in its light. You looked down on the main sofa as James sat on a chair opposite. He was working on a sketch of you as you sat there, your hands folded on your lap. James looked at you from behind his sketchbook and smiled.

The church bells began to ring at six o clock. That used to be Albert’s job when he was a younger boy. He would run down every Sunday morning, reach up, and pull the bells to peel their beautiful sounds. They were clanging as you walked out to home. They didn’t stop when you arrived home. Their echoes used to make you smile at the picture of little Albert reaching for the tall ropes. Now…not so much. Though you heard they would not ring until the war had finished. Their last echo vanished into the air like a dying butterfly.
You had yet to hear from James. But you could not hold a grudge against him. This was the time he trained for.

“Why do you wish to speak to me alone, Mr. Lyons?" you asked.
He rubbed his hands together. Then he began.

Autumn 1913
That Sunday, You and Albert went about on one of your typical Sunday walks. As usual, Joey trotted next to you. The long grass was turning brown. The sky was so bright, yet the air was very crisp. The trees were growing orange with the harvest.
“And how was sitting in that rowboat with Lyons?” he asked, recalling the church picnic yesterday.

Autumn 1912
With the army stationed close, the new arrivals of men in uniform caused a stir. Considering that many of them were young and single, you and the other ladies in town were thrilled. You and your friends couldn’t help but notice and ogle them. Especially the handsome ones. How good it felt to indulge in the good, harmless giggling over attractive men!
At the shop, you worked with three other women close to your age- Mary, Ida, and Alice. After months of working together, the four of you grew in comradery. Sometimes, there would be an hour with no customers and no tasks. Then when a soldier or two passed by outside, one would alert the others.
“Come quick!” was the cry from Mary today.
💜👎🏻and 💻 for the asks! 😁
Hello there! Thank you so much, it does mean a lot!🥺🥺 I love talking about my own writing because I’m obsessive about my own writing (I will legit get so into it that hours pass)
💜- three favorite lines
(Warning, me being a Will hater below. You have been warned. Just fast forward to the rest)
My three favorite lines that I’ve written on this blog/account and the fics associated with this (not including the stuff on @likesomekindofcheese) are
1. The Opening Line of Stella of Essex or The Vicar’s Wife Betrayed (my fix-it fic of The Essex Serpent where it’s told from Stella Ransome’s POV)
“My husband fingered another woman against a tree.”
The “tree” scene happens in the book and I am not 100% sure if it happens in the TV adaptation. But I thought it was a nice, punchy first line for a series to open with the cheating and then rewind in the fic and go through Stella’s early life and her falling in love and marrying Will…knowing the whole time that he’s eventually going to cheat on her. I love using Dramatic Irony like that in stories- reading and writing!
2. This passage from the first chapter of The Twelve Days which is Prince Hal or Henry V/Reader being in an arranged marriage. Reader is tossed into it and is secretly dreading being married off to a powerful man she knows little about.
“Besides, the more cynical side of your brain thought, you were being brought in as no more than a glorified broodmare for England”
I just am proud of “glorified broodmare for England” in terms of describing a Queen Consort.
3. This is from the second chapter of Miss Narracott and The Captain.
“Ain’t nothin’ that makes foolish men quiver like seeing a woman happy on her own terms!”
Just the part of me that’s into feminism discourse loves it and I like it’s the reader’s mother encouraging her to go after whatever makes her happy instead of trying to please others.
👎🏻- if you could change something in one of your works, what would you change and why?
Good question! I have several, but if we are sticking with one, I wish both the first chapter of The Twelve Days and I Say Nothing That Frightens Me was more detailed and got into things. Because at the time I was in a rush to write both and get them just done and posted because I crave getting things done and getting attention for it. But then there is a bit of a shock when the latter chapters have more details and descriptions in them!
💻- three works of yours that are must reads
1. Definitely The Twelve Days series- the arranged marriage between Hal and Reader! Because I love building a relationship and working in the confines of a different time period.
2. The Cure for Virginity (so far, of the “Tom’s Characters” fics I’ve written my most successful! And I’m proud of it 🥰)
3. It’s a tie and here is my reasoning
(Will hate below. Don’t like that then don’t read the next two paragraphs and go the stuff below)
Alternative One: Stella of Essex or The Vicar’s Wife Betrayed felt the most like my own book rather than a run of the mill fanfic, but I know it was very ballsy of me because 1) it’s not a Reader fic like I usually do and 2) I take a loved character (Will) and actually discuss and deconstruct how destructive his canon action of cheating on his wife actually is and he (as well as Cora too) actually is punished and held accountable for it! But I get that it’s spicy and controversial.
So I understand why it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. But that fic was my coping mechanism for my trigger about cheating and being traumatized by The Essex Serpent. That fic is like my baby- you insult it, you insult me.
(Will girlies and Lust Viarettes I offer you this cake as a peace offering)
Understanding that, It leaves the alternative choice!
Alternative Two: Summer in Majorca! Jonathan Pine with some fluff moments, angst, some humor I threw in, and even an attempt at smut at the end😁
(Hopefully these links work😭)
Thanks for asking and letting me monologue!

Spring, 1912
This whole past week you did not see Captain Nicholls back at the shop. He likely had business. You wished to enquire what soldiers were doing here…but it was peacetime. And that was being quite nosy.
A farm never really had a weekend. But Saturday was the only day you could sleep in just a little. Dad insisted that for you.
“Come on, Y/N! I need help with the laundry!” mum called out from the yard.
“Coming in a bit!” you called back from the chair.
You had been repairing clothes that had tears. So far, it looked like Dad’s working pants were decent. Setting down your needle and thread in the basket by your feet, you walked out. As you entered the laundry area, you heard Joey mimicking an owl’s hoot. Both of you jumped and looked around.
“Oh, for goodness' sake!” Mum yelped as she checked around her.
Albert had trained Joey to trot up to him at the sound of it and the horse would bolt from wherever he was. Heaven help whoever was walking about at the same time Joey pranced in the yards! Everyone had to jump out of the way as Joey would hurry to Albert’s call.
But no, you did not worry about getting run over by a horse this time. Both Albert and Joey were standing in the field. They were in the circled off ground before the stable.
Mum lifted a white shirt from the basket of washed clothes. She put it on the line. You found another and did the same.
“Y/N, I want to have a little chat with you…it’s easier to chat when you’re doing laundry, …” Mum announced.
Hi fellow fic writers! I need some writing help- for Miss Narracott and the Captain, how can I show the process of Reader and James Nicholls falling in love?
I definitely don’t want to make it instant and show the passage of time- but how do y’all develop and build a relationship that’s going to be romantic without it being “rushed”? Thank you! (especially if it’s period apropos)

Warnings: A horse ALMOST gets shot but lives. Landlords being landlords. Period Typical Attitudes. But very fluffy with cottagecore vibes and a meet-cute with the captain.
A/N: You can decide if you want to be a member of the family by birth or adoption. I try to make Reader fics as neutral in appearance as I humanly can. I hope you like this! It won't get too super sad or angsty and will have a very happy ending- so enjoy! Comments, asks, reblogs, and messages about my works are always appreciated!
“If the rent’s not paid by October, the farm is foreclosed. And I take the horse, too!” the Landlord had threatened in your kitchen, finishing his tea.

“Hey Love! I saw your post and I have been looking for someone who wrote for James Nicholls. And I’m so happy that you do. I’ve got a request..that he’s married and has a son with the reader and has to leave for the war and promises to come back and he couldn’t keep it. And she has to cope with him being gone and not being there to raise his son?”
for @imboredsueme
His emerald eyes shine as he plants a brief kiss to my cheek. I grin at him and look at the stairs, loud feet running down.
“Father!” Gale yells, happy to see him. I am too, I always miss the days where he sits with us at the dining table, eating in peace. We don’t even have to exchange words. Just his presence makes me feel like everything is okay.
“My little-” He lifts Gale up, squeezing him tight, a kiss on his head. He lets him down and Gale hugs me around the waist. He is growing fast, already at my hip at the age of six.
__________________________________________________
That was almost 9 years ago.
Gale is as tall as me now and James never missed to point it out, knowing that it gets to me. They both just love teasing me.
“Love, what are you doing for dinner, it smells amazing.” James walks into the room, still in his uniform. I stirr the soup and set it aside, ready to cut some bread.
“Just some carrot soup with bread and butter.” I reply. He comes closer, drawing his fingers around my waist and presses against my form. His lips on my exposed neck. His hands cupping my swelling stomach. I hold the knife tight.
“Do you want me to cut myself.” I chuckle, placing it down and turn in his arms, wrapping them around his neck.
“Of course not, I just wanted you to turn around.” He admits and I bite my lip as he grins. He kisses me, my left hand in his hair. The kiss gets deep very quickly, making me pull away.
“Everything okay?” I breathe a laugh, cupping his cheek.
“Yes.” He glances down at my baby bump and back up, Gale’s voice makes us turn to him.
“Hey, can I help set the table?” He walks inside and I peel myself from between James and the counter.
“That would be great, thank you sweetie.” I give him the plates and James takes the soup and cuts the bread. We sit down and start eating.
“I have news for you.” James says, my hand stills over the bread. I draw it back, setting both on my lap. “I am going next week.” I gulp the food down, glancing at my hands, cupping my belly. My breath gets heavy and I push the chair back. I stand up and so does he.
“Love, (Y/N), wait. Please, don’t go.” He holds my arm, I face him. Tears well in my eyes, I bite the inside of my cheek. His own gloss over, breath heavy.
“You couldn’t have chosen a worse time to go.” I mutter and he glances down at me and back up, tiliting his head to the side. I hated that look he gives me. He knows I can’t yell at that face.
“It’s not my choice. The war is nearly over, after that I will stay. I promise.” He steps closer, hands on my stomach.
“I- I just want our baby to have a father.” I mumble. I didn’t get to grow up with one, so I honestly wish the baby- and Gale, of course- get to live with one. To grow up around mom and dad.
“I promise, love. I won’t leave you ever again.” He says, I nod, tears in my eyes. He wipes them away when they fall.
“Okay.” I know I don’t really have a choice either. Even if I want him to stay- he has to go. It’s for our safetly. For our country and for the world.
_________________________________________________
He kept telling me about meeting him at the market place. The soldiers would ride through the town, saying their goodbyes.
“Gale, Gale come on. We have to leave!” I yell upstairs. But nothing comes in reply. I sigh, stroking my belly and try to get up the stairs carefully.
“Mom, stop! I’m coming.” He stands at the top and I let out a breath. I step back. Gale walks down, an arm around my shoulder.
“I know you hate him for leaving. But promise me that you tell him that you love him today.” I say to Gale, glancing at the side of his face. He looks so much like James.
“Mom, he is leaving you alone- leaving us both. We both know that he probably won’t come back.” He mumbles the last part. I have to hold back tears and shake my head, we come to a stop inside a crowd.
“Don’t say that. You know that’s not true.” He huffs and looks ahead. I press my lips together, tring to get onto my tiptoes. It’s hard.
Then I see him. My husband. He walks towards us, his green uniform looks new, polished shoes on his feet. He stops in front of us, giving me a sad smile. He glances at Gale, who looks more mad than before. I rub his arm but he pulls away, still glaring at James.
“You’re a terrible father.” He mutters, walking by James. We both look after him. I can’t stop him, I don’t want to. He needs time. I look back at James, shaking my head.
“I told him not to be mad at you. It’s not your choice. He knows that.” I try to apologize for Gale but James breathes a laugh. Tears in his eyes.
“I know, I still love him.” He takes off his hat, taking me into his arms, holding me tight.
“Love, I need you to be strong. Be rough with Gale if you have to. He has much to learn. And when I’m back, I want our babygirl to be proud of her dad. She will be the most beautiful girl.” He pushes his face into my neck and the sound that leaves his lips makes my heart tremble.
“She will be, I know it because I already am. I will tell her every day how brave you are.” He pulls back, the sound of horses catching our attention.
“I have to go.” I nod, smiling at him through my teary vision. He kisses me, holding my face with shaky hands. I place mine on top of them, trying to take some fear off him. Then he kneels on one knee. He kisses my clothed belly, stroking the sides.
“I promise I’ll be back.” He mutters and stands up, one last smile and he is gone. On a beautiful horse. We share another moment, just looking at each other.

“Mom, mom!” I poke my head from out the kitchen, Gale stands at the door. Two men in front of him. Their uniforms looking much like James’. I glance at Judith, she sleeps peacefully in her crib. As soon as I step outside the kitchen, she screams. I ignore it for a second, joining the men at the door.
“How can I help you?” I ask, giving both a warm smile.
“Are you Mrs. (Y/N) Nicholls?” One asks, I nod and furrow my eyebrows. He carries a letter in his hands and holds it out for me to take.
“We are sorry to inform you- James Nicholls- he died on the field today.” My heart thumps against my ribcage, Judith’s screams get louder- just like the ones in my head. I glance at the envelope, drops of tears staining the paper.
“Thank you, gentlemen.” I try to smile at them but who am I kidding. I just lost the man of my life. My husband James. Gale closes the door, I slide down to the floor, not able to stand on my shaky legs. Carefully I open the envelope- A letter from James.
“Mom-” I glance up. Gale is covered in tears, red cheeks and quivering chin. I pull him towards me and let him cry, just as I cry with him.
“He loved you so much. He was so proud of you.” I mumble and Gale shakes. I try to stroke his back, I try to sooth him.
“I miss him so much.” Gale whimpers and my eyes burn from all the tears. My shoulder soaked in them.
“Me too.”

Five months have passed. Five months in which I needed James the most. I didn’t expect it to be so hard- raising a 15 year old and a little baby girl. Sleep was non exisiting currently. And Gale gave me a hard time- but I know he can’t control it. He’s grieving. But so am I.
“Gale, come down please. We need to leave for the market.” Since we lost James, we basically had to sell many things. But we also had to find another way to get money, so we could live.
“Gale!” I yell again, Judith crying on my arm. I try to sing to her, collecting more things to sell. Old books, even furniture- and our beloved sheeps had to go too today.
There was still no reply and I sigh, making my way upstairs. Gale walks over to his bed, sitting down.
“Can you please help me? I need to bring everything to the market. I can’t do it on my own.” He doesn’t look up. My frustration only grows, making me stomp over, shifting Judith to the other hip.
“I ask one thing of you- one thing!” I try not to yell but my voice is loud and clear. Finally Gale looks up at me.
“If dad would be here- we wouldn’t have to sell anything!” He screams back, angry tears running down his cheeks. He stands up and glares at me.
“Are you saying any of this is my fault?” I ask, not believing what he may imply.
“Maybe- you could’ve tried harder. Maybe he would still be here.” I hold Judith tight against me, shaking my head at Gale, my eyes furrow on him.
“Don’t you dare say that! This is no ones fault, you know that!” My voice breaks, I rock Judith in my arms. She stirrs and cuddles closer to me.
“I don’t care.” He says and sits back down, lying on the bed. He stares at the ceiling. More tears leave his eyes. Remember- be rough with him. That’s what James told me.
“So you won’t help me? Fine! You can go and beg for something to eat tonight. There will only be two plates on the table. Don’t bother to sit with us.” I turn around, climbing down the stairs. At the bottom I lose my act and sit at the table. Drainef of any energy.
“Mom.” Gale stands beside me, a hand on my shoulder. I glance at him, his eyes puffy.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean that.” He admits and I stand up.
“It’s hard if we do this to each other. Let’s work together.” He nods, taking me and Judith into his arms.
“I’m so sorry, mom.” I smile through my tears, stroking his hair.
“I know. I love you Gale.” He pulls back and glances at all the things we have to get rid of.
“Let’s do this.”
