Detail of fireplace, Farnsworth House, Mies van der Rohe. Plano, Illinois, 1945-1951. Supreme statement of minimalism, the fireplace is elementally reduced to two rectangular volumes in contrasting steel and travertine, and a back plane of steel. Without the accessories of logs and black fireplace grate, there is no visual clue that betrays its actual domestic function.
