anyway. I think it's so neat how tim clearly had a proto crush on dick grayson, then nightwing (just look at his face when they meet, cmon. it's not like tim could've predicted where their relationship was headed lmao), and then chris kent, future nightwing, had a proto crush on him (he thought robin tim was so cool and even name dropped being grateful of meeting him when he first sacrificed himself to the phantom zone, and when they meet later on during the red robin era he still has so much faith in him). full circle kind of stuff.

A Lonely Place of Dying, summarized very accurately

Dick *grabs fleeing child, punts him into the ground, then menacingly grabs his shirt collar*: “All right, suspicious kid, who the hell are you and what are you up to?”

Tim: “Hi, you are Dick Grayson, my name doesn’t matter and also I refuse to tell you, it’s important that we keep our priorities in order as I’m sure you’ll agree, anyway so glad I found you and also nice to meet you! By the way we are solving this murder mystery together look here’s some evidence that I found while I was crawling through the trash bins I know I may have appeared suspicious on account of the skulking around and also fleeing from you when you tried to grab me plus my general demeanor but please don’t focus on that right now anyway the good news is I believe I have solved our case!”

Dick: “... What. Who.”

Add the author’s reply, cowards!

I scrolled through the notes on this post and my favorite has to be one mockingly accusing Madeline Miller (a Latin and Greek teacher with a Masters in Classics) of needing to do research and she wasn’t a real writer like them.

Anyway when I read that line I immediately understood what she was trying to say.

Honestly, the first time I saw this tweet, I laughed my tits straight into the ocean.

I know what ‘olive skinned’ (and thus variations on it) means, but the author taking the time to have a little laugh, acknowledge that it’s at least a bit funny, and drop some knowledge is appreciated.

And a double thanks to the person I reblogged from for linking the articles.

The thread is perfect as it is, but just in case

Left: traditional extraction using a capacho basket, right modern extraction using a cold press. One is greenish brown and the other is green.

In case you want to see what the author meant about that not beeing what she saw.

I thought about them again, i really like when halloween specials show characters in fun costumes, specially when the characters already usually wear costumes…

Dick’s role in A Lonely Place of Dying is so massively important and good, which is why it’s so sad when it gets overlooked or erased.

In the 1990 collected edition, Dennis O’Neil (Batman editor of the time) talked about why he wanted Dick to be a central part of the third Robin’s origin. Dick needed to be there to show several key points:

  1. Tim and Dick are deeply connected to each other (their childhood meeting at the circus, which links old Robin to new)
  2. Dick approves of and endorses Tim as Robin (he directly tells Bruce that Tim should be Robin)
  3. Dick cannot return to being Robin, no matter how much he tries, because he has his own new role now (this is shown through the failed Batman/Nightwing teamup against Two Face)

O’Neil’s goal was to preemptively combat any potential concerns or complaints readers might have about a third Robin. He had overseen the updates to Jason’s origins and had observed the mistakes they made and which complaints they received. In particular, the new origin for Jason 2.0 gave Dick little control over leaving the Robin mantle or passing it down. This bolstered fan complaints that Jason was usurping Dick, a feeling that O’Neil did not want to continue with the third Robin.

These considerations were the foundation of how Marv Wolfman constructed Tim’s origin and character: someone with an almost fated connection to Dick, who idealized Dick and was passionate about what the dynamic duo meant as symbols, and who explicitly had Dick’s blessing to be Robin.

So, when people remove Dick from Tim’s origin, they are removing a core part of Tim’s character and how he got the mantle.

the au where shiva is Tim's mother has taken over my brain to a worrying extent.

a lot of my dc comics knowledge is still very superficial but I like canonverse despite all its flaws. unfortunately, or fortunately, retcons means I have to make a lot of shit up anyway.

okay, so, au thoughts/summary:

  • she and Richard Dragon meet whilst training under O-sensei in her early years as Shiva, and have a torrid rivals-to-lovers thing. shiva doesn't realise she's pregnant again until after they've both gone their own ways
  • there's no dad to take in this one and she has no interest in raising a child herself. but she's curious if, without ever having reason to struggle, this child of two genius fighters would still develop a warriors spirit or inherit her abilities
  • she picks the Drakes bc they're rich, seem harmless, and also Drake has a similar meaning to Dragon which she finds funny.
  • She checks on the family occasionally, but its just a "not dead yet" check until Tim suddenly becomes interested in karate and other martial arts (after he realises who batman and robin are). she shows up in the audience of some of his karate competitions but he's definitely Nothing Special, so she peaces out again
  • until she meets Robin in Paris whilst trying to track down King Snake and recognises his body language. now he's got her attention!
  • she realises whilst training him that behind his restrained veneer is a future supervillain just waiting for an excuse to go Fucking Batshit. this pleases Lady Shiva and is why she becomes invested in trying to make him snap. he's wasting his potential and running away from what would make him most fulfilled, she is simply being a good mother and encouraging him to be his best self
  • when he refuses to kill king snake she says some cryptic shit about being like his "real father" which is the first hint Tim has that he's adopted.
  • but to be the Good Robin and not follow Jason's mistakes, he decides not to delve into that and potentially trigger Bruce into a meltdown. he confirms with Bruce that he was adopted (and Bruce knew about it) since his dad is still comatose, and swears that he isn't interested in his biological parents and won't look into them.
  • despite being tempted several times, he actually keeps to his word on that
  • until after his Bad Time where he: lost steph, his dad, and kon; Bart isn't dead yet but is aged up into adulthood; cass has vanished after confronting Shiva; his stepmother, fake uncle and home were all lost when bludhaven got destroyed
  • in the comics this is when Tim, Bruce and Dick go on a cruise retracing batmans original training journey which was supposed to help heal all their trauma and reset their character arcs (and then Tim comes back and starts trying to clone Kon in a secret basement under titans tower)
  • here, Tim decides to track down Shiva using the excuse of looking for Cass.

more thoughts:

late to the party, but I also think you could have some fun with the fact that Jason also once thought that Lady Shiva was his mum.

Just, like, the exasperation on Bruce’s face when Tim finally makes the reveal, immediately getting a migraine and refusing to believe it despite everything Tim and Shiva say because no, come on guys, we’ve been through this before, you’re not Robin’s mom.

so fun fact: in this au Tim decides not to seek out his biological parents after he finds out he was adopted, right, bc he heard about what happened to Jason and didn't want to repeat the mistakes of the past?

it takes multiple years (and the death of his dad and best friends) before he decides to secretly track down his biological parents and has a Vigilante Road Trip/Very Regretful Time with Shiva.

Bruce, meanwhile, also didn't want to be repeat the mistakes of the past... so as soon as he found Tim's adoption paperwork he used the batcomputer to run a DNA test and look for matches and just. didn't tell Tim! and shiva's dna was on the system bc he collected it during that interrogation.

so Bruce went through the "but lady shiva was drugged with sodium pentathol when she said she had no children!" shock like. right at the start of tim's Robin career, before tim finds out he was adopted thanks to shiva dropping hints in paris.

in fact, he knew before Tim's mom (janet) died! back when tim was just living at Wayne Manor due to his parents being Loving But Neglectul.

and bruce settled on "Well, I was ready to accept Jason as shivas son so I guess I shouldn't let this change how i treat tim, but clearly i also shouldn't tell him about it in case the Knowlege Changes Him. I must make sure he is Prepared and Ready before i reveal this information... maybe on his 18th birthday as part of an elaborate morality test."
