This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Andrew and his wife, Gabriella, are the creators of hOMe, the 207 SF (+110 SF in lofts) modern tiny house on wheels.

They live and work in hOMe full time, off grid, and debt free. With the extra time and money that they have they travel and enjoy time together as a family. Andrew Morrison has been a professional builder for 20 years and has been teaching people how to build their own homes in his hands on workshops since 2004. In that time he has personally taught over 1,400 participants how to hand craft their own homes and has seen again and again that anyone with passion and perseverance can build theirs too. Andrew and his family’s personal experience with tiny housing came while living in the “American Dream” home. Frustrated by feeling like slaves to it, they got rid of 90% of their worldly belongings, bought a pop up tent trailer and spent nearly five months reassessing what “home” meant to them while living in Mexico.

This is why I turned down the MoMA in NYC last year when they asked if they could display the COMET camper as a piece of art - where the hell was I supposed to live while people oohed and aahed at my home? For many of us, our homes are artful and beautiful yes, but they are also real spaces that we inhabit on a daily basis.

The Dumpster Project: Creating One of the Most Sustainable Tiny Homes

Jeff Wilson, an environmental professor at Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, Texas, has been living in a dumpster on campus for the past four months. The 33-sq-ft space, only 1% the size of the average American home, is in the first phase of a project to test the possibilities of sustainable and “tiny” living. Currently outfitted to match the poor energy performance of a typical American house, it will soon be retrofitted with all sustainable features, including solar panels and a “cutting-edge eco toilet.” The project is currently seeking additional funding through Kickstarter

In the rush to help create low carbon economies as a solution to curbing climate change, the construction industry has strived to create zero-carbon homes whose footprint is negligible. Now UK company Lignacite has developed the Carbon Buster, a building block that is actually carbon negative.
Made from over 50 percent recycled material, the brick is an amalgam of cement, sand and water. It also features wood particles that sequester carbon dioxide and store the gas in the block itself, rather than emitting it into the atmosphere. According to test results, its 3.6N/mm2 strength bricks have an embodied carbon level of -14 kg per tonne – compared to the industry standard of 100kg. Its 7.3N/mm2 strength model also has -3 kg per tonne rating. According to the company, the blocks are suitable for most building projects and also offer greater noise absorption than industry standards.

"We are currently around 15 Thais and international peoples (mostly Thai), speaking both English and Thai, and spanning in age from five-years old to 47. We moved onto the Pun Pun land in July 2003. We live, eat, work, and teach together in community. We work the organic gardens together. We build our natural dwellings with our own hands. We maintain a seed-saving operation where we collect, propagate, and network rare, heirloom, and local seeds. On a regular basis, we have many visitors from within Thailand, surrounding countries, and other parts of the world. We host hands-on educational events to share our knowledge with others. Several of us travel extensively, working with villagers, NGO’s, and others."
