Well, this is horrifying. Not only will 99.9% of readers never take the extra step to look at the sources, that web page won't be around twenty years from now. I'm not sure ANY of our current internet will be around.

They're not kidding when they say future people will call these times a digital dark age. Historians will be glad to have the paper books of Ta-Nehisi Coates as a resource to understand the bizarre early 21st century, but they're going to be really pissed at his publisher.

this is the academic version of "source: trust me bro" and "source: I made it up"

I guess the publisher really wanted those hamas and PLFP propaganda to not be in their book

Agreed. I cannot help but think that Mr. Coates doesn't have any actual sources that would meet academic standards.

Yeeeeep this is hella suspicious

I went to the link (apologies if someone else in thread has too and I’m just repeating!). It’s… not a bibliography. What it is is a short essay reflecting on (some) of the sources Coates has used.

I like this because it’s useful to see his comments on, and responses to, the texts. He talks about his research process and how he used the sources to add to his argument. All good stuff.

That said, if this is a complete bibliography? It seems extremely thin. He cites 26 authors. For a well-researched, academic book, I’d expect a lot more. I cited 50+ sources for a 15,000-word honours dissertation, for context. I strongly suspect there are additional sources he hasn’t named - understandable given that this is effectively an essay reflecting on his research process, but unacceptable if this is meant to be a bibliography.

Finally, I’ll leave you with this screenshot of part of his Notes:

To which the only possible response can be: and where have you been living? Under a rock?

Anonymous asked:

If blood quantum laws are reactionary then what is holding an ethnic group together

Kinship and ways of organizing it, culture, language, connection to a place. Blood has almost no relevance at all except as a Euromodern scientistic signifier for lineage. Blood quantum as determined and qualified by the imperial state is especially not a factor keeping Native communities together except as internal colonies. Blood quantum in that sense is only a secondary aspect of the ward relationship between the Federal government and Federally recognized tribal nations. The nations use it to legitimize membership by Federal standards, and some members even sincerely believe in it just as they sincerely believe in the Federal ward relationship. But the relationship and the measurement is colonial nevertheless
