My favorite Darren story: So Darren gets Eastwick and then gets Glee, which is great, and then, I work a lot with Walt Disney Imagineering and they needed voices for a new ride in Disneyland called Star Tours, they cast Darren to be a background voice. Darren comes in the office and I said “I need to see you in the Conference room” which means he automatically thinks he’s in trouble. We get into the Conference room and I say “I know you’re really excited about Glee, but you’re going to be doing the voice on the Star Tours” I’m telling you the scream! He’s nothing but a big nerd! His entire reaction was just “oh, my god! Oh, my god!” When he did the session, he had the time of his life.

Ross [Lynch] on the other hand, I had never met before. I saw him at the test and there were a lot of other Austin’s and a lot of other Ally’s…I really don’t know why my mom and I decided to sit by that side of the room, but we did and then my mom and his dad, Mark, started talking. Somehow, Glee got brought up and Darren Criss and at that time, Riker was working on the show and I was obsessed with Darren Criss, so that came up.

Raise your hand if you could watch Darren Criss order artisanal cheeses and grilled romaine for daysssssss. Just kidding, we could not either, and that was annoyingly funny as hell, but kudos to the artist formerly known as Blaine for deftly playing such a douchetastic 180 as Hotel Cortez’s resident hipster a-hole in tonight’s American Horror Story: Hotel. (Glee’s Kurt would have put him on blast at the first pretentious eye-roll, thus saving his life, further proving Klaine fans made a really valid life choice.)

Darren [Criss] was like a fireball. I don’t know if I’ve ever met anyone with as much energy as him. […] His vocals were really amazing. He made some small changes to some of the actual melodies that I wouldn’t mind - (don’t tell Stephen [Trask] that I said that) - keeping. His physical presence was really amazing to watch and his singing was great. He was like a fast and furious Hedwig.

Much has been made of Darren Criss taking on the main role, making him the youngest Hedwig to date. It’s no surprise that he slays each and every one of his vocals. He frequently sang live on Glee and having also watched him perform live in concert, I can attest he is a truly gifted singer. However, Criss delivers so much more than just a good vocal performance. He transforms completely, and for nearly 90 minutes, we don’t see a single element of the actor at all. We watch Hedwig. He embodies her so completely that at the end, when Hedwig is stripped bare, there is a moment of total and utter silence as the audience tries to rectify the man standing before them with the outrageous, funny, bitter and vicious, Hedwig that we’ve been watching. He is a true master at bringing all Hedwig’s pain and anger to the surface, and it manifests itself in each and every song, whether loud and intense or soft, slow and heartfelt. He is quick to deliver off the cuff banter as well as rehearsed come backs which one would only realise were planned if seeing the show more than once, as I did. He keeps the pace up throughout and delivers long monologues that keep the audience laughing, and all in a flawless German accent. The audience does need to listen carefully though, to catch all that is being said. Criss seems most at home out in the audience, making out with unsuspecting guys who then sit proudly smeared in lipstick for the rest of the evening. He makes sure to thank them all at the end, but to be honest, they all seemed pretty thrilled.

We reported recently a little bit about “Rise,” which is a song co-written by Darren Criss that is one of two that he has coming up. Neither one of them are exactly Blaine spotlight songs, but we can at least still say that this one is particularly great. It almost makes us wonder why the show was not looking to him for more original songs before now. It has an anthem sort of quality to it that makes it perfect for the show, and we may actually like it a good bit more than some of the other original songs that were released many years ago

I was definitely a fan of the show. I remember I watched the first and second [seasons] and then I kind of dropped off a little. Then, I had to catch up when I got the show. I was a fan and I always liked the stuff Mercedes (Amber Riley) did and I always liked Blaine. Darren [Criss] is a performer and he’s very, very good at it. He can sell pretty much anything.

With this being the “Glee” off-season, many actors are going to be off doing some of their own things. This is amplified right now even more than usual, as the show is really staring off into the horizon. The sixth season is the last one, and after that many actors may enter pilot season, music, theater, or many other ventures. For Darren Criss, this is really a unique situation since he is a triple-threat in many ways. We know that he is a gifted singer thanks to his time on the show and with his original musical; meanwhile, he also happens to be a great actor, and he also can handle the choreography of a major stage production. The world in some ways could be his oyster.
