“Darren Criss is Mesmerizing” -The New York Times
When @HedwigonBway tweeted the above quote yesterday, I wondered where it came from, since I couldn’t recall that the Times had reviewed the performance. So I searched for it. it’s actually a sentence from an article about theatrical and film directors who are now directing operas at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City.
In the context of discussing Michael Mayer, the director of Hedwig, Anthony Tommasini writes: “I only recently caught up with Mr. Mayer’s smash hit “Hedwig,” currently starring the mesmerizing Darren Criss. The stage teems with color, atmosphere and activity, and Mr. Mayer conveys the heady mix of seediness and sensuality in the world of a gender-fluid singer. The decibel level was unbearable, but, hey, I get it: This is a rock musical. And I understood even better how the director could so effectively depict a garish Las Vegas in his colorful “Rigoletto.”
Nice mention!
