i really wanted this plot twist
Okay, Kurt's little smirk, bat of eyelashes, and the tone of his voice - all reminiscent of his verbal smack down of Rachel's sycophants after winning Midnight Madness in season 4, and his verbal jousting with Sebastian in season 3. When Kurt gets like this? Everyone clear out.
I love it. It's the little things - the mannerisms - Chris Colfer? Spot on.
It’s also important to note that a lot of older people who are uncomfortable with homosexuality will refer to someone’s partner as their “friend.” When she says Kurt is a “good friend” to Blaine, she’s trying to support Blaine but distance Kurt. Kurt calls her out on it.
Reblogging again for the great commentary.
So I saw someone saying something about how June is a mirror of Blaine and I totally agree.
She’s a socialite so that means she knows how to read a room and how to make friends. She’s also a patron so she’s supportive. She also has beeen divorced a lot, apparently because her love life and career didn’t meshed wll together.
So what I get from her is that she is exactly what Blaine could be, and particularly, what Blaine could be if h doesn’t seize the opportunity to be a professional performer.
What she said about her marriages and Blaine’s engagement makes me think that maybe, when she was young, whether she sacrificed her career for her love, which led to resentment and a bitter breakup but she never got the same chance again after, or that (especially being a woman) her first husband didn’t like to have a wife more successful than him.
She’s a perfect example for Blaine to realize it’s not all or nothing in love life and career, it’s a balance. It’s not about if Blaine loves Kurt but if Blaine trusts Kurt to support him if he’s more successful than him (which for now, he doesn’t, not really, because Blaine is convinced that he doesn’t get things freely, he earns them, and with the cheating and all, in the back of his mind, he continues to think that he doesn’t deserve or earned Kurt’s support) and if Blaine can accept that his successes are not Kurt’s failures (something that Kurt seemed to have accepted in that episode).
The thing with June is, I think, Blaine is the first surprised to have been chosen. Because there he was just a support for Kurt, he didn’t “work” for it. He came to this thing almost like the guy who drives his friend to an audition and ends up with the oscar winning role.
He want to be the guy who uses his spotlight to showcase someone else (the end of Candles everyone ?), not the guy who inadvertently “steal” the spotlight from the others. When he works with a team, even if he does all the work, hee considers that the team won as a whole.
So added with insecurities, guilt, and people pleasing issues, this is why he’s trying so much to convince June to get Kurt on board too.
And I think June sees there a pattern that she has to squash in the egg if Blaine wants to reveal his full potential.
This is a really interesting interpretation. I am reminded of a few of Shirley MacLaine’s interviews about this where she talked about June as a frustrated performer - she clearly is, it’s not standard for a socialite to get up and sing Janis Joplin at a charity event, but she jumps at the chance to be on stage. Makes me think you might be very right about her past.
Shirley MacLaine on her character June Dolloway (from her interview with EW.com)
Glee has landed yet another legendary guest star, and this time it’s one Shirley MacLaine, who will appear in two episodes this season as June Dolloway, a wealthy socialite and NYADA donor who takes a special interest in Blaine (Darren Criss) when they cross paths.
In anticipation of MacLaine’s Glee debut on April 29 (at 8 p.m. on Fox), the showbiz great chatted with EW about the show’s grueling schedule and how it felt to kick her heels up once again.
No matter what June wants, Blaine is going to choose Kurt :)
Okay, nonnie, I’m really sorry if that comes out harsh but I’ve been blowing off steam in my friends’ inboxs for days now because the idea of this whole story being boiled down to Blaine choosing Kurt really bothers the hell out of me.
No matter what story we are getting, June is going to ask Blaine to lie about something, whether it’s staying in the closet or pretending he is single or another story none of us considered before, in all cases, that’s not who Blaine is. This is going to involve Blaine hiding and pretending to be someone he is not. The way I view it, and despite what Darren said in that audio post, it’s not a choice between Kurt and stardom, it’s between Blaine and stardom, or at least the stardom that is portrayed as something unattainable if he doesn’t say whatever it is that June wants him to say. Because Blaine will want to stay true to himself and to who he is. A couple of friends and I were actually talking about the possibility of this story having a parallel with Mercedes’s story in Wonder-ful. That’s my focus in the whole thing.
I don’t want this to revolve around Kurt at all if I’m being honest, no matter what the story is, I don’t want Blaine’s choice to be portrayed as him not doing it because of or for Kurt, I want it to be something he is doing it for himself because that’s the right choice for him before it’s the right choice for his relationship with Kurt. His relationship is going to be a factor, but I don’t want it to be the be all end all in Blaine’s decision.
I’m not in the opinion that this is a sacrifice that would make you a romantic and prove that you are in love. Blaine shouldn’t have to sacrifice his dream to get Kurt. NEVER
If we’re getting either stories, Kurt is a factor amongst many factors that Blaine has to consider in making his decision but ultimately, the choice Blaine could be asked to make isn’t between Kurt and fame, it’s between Blaine and fame.
Hi, the chilean anon here. I was seeing all this (gross) speculation, and maybe the "lie" that blaine reveals is that nyada is a scam school jajajajajajaajjajajaaj xD. I mean june is rich and had to have contacts. Now seriously, maybe she didn't ask him to stay in the closet (like people are saying), but more of the lines of saying he is indeed gay but single to appeal to more people.
¡Hola!
That’s along the lines of what i’m thinking. Not that she asks Blaine to play straight, but to do the typical pop star thing where they’re perpetually single. I mean, anyone who’s a fan of boybands knows that line of bullshit. Especially pre social networking.
Reblogging for fruitydany. :)
