Arthur’s Theme [Stripped-Down Version]

I really love this track, and keep coming back to thinking about the lyrics. I get the reference to the Finn line, but the song is interesting for other reasons. The number is supposed to be a way to motivate Rachel to do the audition, but the song isn’t really about that. That “caught between the moon and NYC” line is always weird, but I think the moon is your dream—New York is the gritty, hard stuff that can get in the way. It’s the reality. So when you’re stuck, when you can’t get to your dream, then at least find someone: fall in love.

What Will it Be?

Reaction to 6.06. Around 500 words of Kurt coping and realizing some stuff. Not my usual thing, and I’m not even sure if I believe it, but I couldn’t get it out of my head.

It’s a Paula Cole song that finally snaps him out of it. 

Kurt had been doing that thing where he imagines different reunion scenarios, most far into the future: At a party celebrating his Tony nomination, drawn to each other in a sea of gorgeous faces; coming home from a date to find Blaine waiting for him on the stoop of Kurt’s new Park Slope brownstone, ready; over cake samples for Rachel’s “wedding of the century,” realizing they’d been planning their own wedding all along. 

His favorite fantasy is the one where they run into each other in Provincetown in their 50s, both divorced with kids off to college, their friendship long faded to coffee dates every few years and the occasional postcard. Revisiting the dreams of his youth, Kurt will have just purchased a house right in town. He’ll run into Blaine at a bookstore and learn Blaine had decided to rent a place for the month of July. They’ll be late dinners and all-night conversations as they catch up on their lives and fall easily back in love as if they were always meant to be together.

Rachel says to Mercedes of Kurt “I think that he works better when he collaborates” and “I don’t want all the kids singing Into the Woods and Paula Cole this week” and we all say Rachel you would totally let them sing Into the Woods if only you were here for it, what are you talking about.

This storyline has never meant so much to me.  Because Rachel sings that first line walking in past the posters, in past the signs of the dream she had always believed in and once achieved.  The dream the dark sides of whose reality, in the form of self-interested agents and lying television producers, so quickly sapped her joy and triumph in achieving it, and left her almost broken when they were done.

“Okay! Kiss, Marry, Ditch: Coach Sam. Mr. Hummel. Mr. Anderson.”

Blaine is alone in the Schuester-Pillsbury kitchen, scraping his plate and rinsing it before putting it in the dishwasher, when he overhears the group of new New Directioners out on the balcony.

“Ugh, you guys are so G-rated, it’s gross,” Kitty says. “Why don’t we just talk about our favorite My Little Ponies?”

“Twilight Sparkle!” Two voices say in unison. Blaine tips his head. The twins?

He should leave, it’s rude to eavesdrop, particularly when it’s about him. And really, he’d rather not know the answer but—Blaine pauses just at the threshold of the kitchen and dining room. His eyes are immediately drawn to Kurt, who has his back turned while he talks to Mercedes.

“Come on, someone answer!” Madison, he thinks. “Alright I’ll go then. Kiss Mr. Hummel. Marry Coach Sam. Ditch Mr. Anderson.”

Blaine winces a little, he can’t help it. What’s so wrong with him? Why does he get ditched? Does no one want to marry him?

6x06 reaction fic

Klaine, 1450 words, A03.

Kitty watches Blaine and the guys rehearse and learns something interesting.

Kitty held back as Jane and Madison sat down in the first row of the auditorium, and then took a seat in the row behind them, close enough to keep an eye on them but far enough that their sugary sweetness wouldn’t overwhelm her. Mercedes had instructed them to watch while the guys rehearsed a song that was apparently the theme from an old movie. It was romantic and kind of pretty, if you liked that kind of thing.

At least Mercedes had let someone else take the lead on this one. Kitty was annoyed at how she had just shown up and taken over. Rachel and Kurt were clearly doing just fine on their own, especially with Kitty’s help. They had won the invitational, after all. And now Mercedes was here encouraging Rachel to abandon them, just as Kitty had known she would.

Blaine was sitting at the piano, patiently running through the song until everyone knew their entrances. Sam and Artie weren’t paying much attention, but Spencer seemed rapt enough. Kurt just looked like he was torn between jumping Blaine’s bones and exploding with nervous tension.

It only got worse when Blaine ran through Roderick’s lines, Kurt gazing at Blaine like he was the answer to all his dreams. That Blainers did have a way with love songs.

"I don’t get it. Why is Mr. Anderson here?" Jane asked, turning in her seat to look at Kitty.

Kurt’s doing a good job on “whatever his thesis is” aka Operation Fix Shit with Blaine.

I like that this is the Demotivator poster we get in this episode and scene, with Rachel in the room. I mean, she is getting to work—with both the New Directions as well as Broadway. Her work is just tied to dreams: her work is to get others to believe in the power of their dreams. Idk, I just think there’s some cool irony at work with this poster, given Rachel’s job and aspirations.
