fic: three steps

The NYC Crew, 2018. (Well, part of them. No Artie or Santana, sorry.)

Three couples, three different stages. Finchel, Samcedes, Klaine.

She’s in Ohio again.

Not for long—she’s just stopping by. Her newest pilot is about to air and one of her dads—-well, he’s not doing so well, so rather than having them fly out to for her premiere, she’s going to watch it on television at home with them.

Before any of that happens, though, there’s someone she needs to see.

“Hello Finn,” she says quietly, before kneeling and placing flowers beside the grave.

As usual, the grave doesn’t respond, but the wind picks up, and she feels at peace.

“I’m sorry it’s been so long since I’ve visited. LA is a little farther than New York, you know?” She laughs, playing with the ring on her finger. “My pilot got picked up. Second show in five years, that’s pretty amazing, you know? And everyone is doing well from my end.

“Well, not well-well—my Dad is really sick, but not, like, terminal or anything. The doctors say he’ll get better, he just—needs to take it easy for right now. So I’m visiting them rather than having them visit me.

“And, um, I have some news. Some news I haven’t told anyone about, mostly because I don’t know what to say but also I wanted to tell you first because I thought maybe if I told you I’d know more about what my answer’s going to be.

“But, um, I’m rambling. But you remember Bradley, right? The director I’ve been dating?

“He—he asked me to marry him.” She pulls a ring out from her jacket pocket and fiddles with it in her hands. “He asked me to marry him, and I asked him if I could think about it, and then I ran into the bathroom and threw up.”

What was your first time like?

With all our riots about twerking and Blaine’s ass and Kurt shirtless and tattooed and pierced, I just want to take a minute to remember the Finchel fandom tonight. The scene at the end with Rachel’s tattoo was beautiful, but obviously bittersweet. 

*hugs you all really tight*

…so asked someone on another forum that I frequent.

And my first gut response to such a query was, of course, “How dare you question Burt Hummel you unprecedented ingrate, I will murder you with a stapler and sell your organs for cocaine.” Y’know, a rational response.

And…

I have a question. Do you also think the fact that Rachel and Finn were marching down the aisle and Kurt was about to go back to New York to go back to school yes or no factored into Burt’s ease with this?

I remember one of Rachel’s dads commenting that the wedding needed to stop because they needed to get Rachel’s Broadway dreams back on track, and apparently three years rather than three months has passed since the end of season four as far as my memories are concerned because I can’t remember. But wasn’t a big shout out from a lot of characters (Quinn weighed in here too I think) that Rachel couldn’t put her dream of going to New York on hold for Finn, and Finn couldn’t make all his decisions based off what Rachel was doing?

Because I feel like that’s a piece of the comparison I haven’t seen (Um, well not on my dash so others might have). Meanwhile you’ve got Kurt already in New York and Blaine planing on going to New York.

Whether or not that works out might be a pothole in the road for Kurt and Blaine, I don’t know, but I’m just throwing this out there.

The Creekbed: “What was up with Burt changing his stance on getting married young?”

This strikes me as an important difference too. We have that scene in “New York” where Kurt’s already talked with Blaine about moving to New York together, before he and Rachel discuss it and before he and Blaine have even exchanged “I love you.” And Finn is still unsure enough of his future and Rachel is unsure enough about Finn, that we get Kurt’s (paraphrased) “Bring him along, he’ll be useful when we have to move heavy things.” That sense of a certain, future plan has been A Thing for K&B for a long time. It’s not hard to imagine the plan could even predate their romance. When Blaine checks in with Kurt about applying to NYADA in “Glee Actually”, it’s a question of “are *we* still on the same page here” rather than Blaine asking permission (not that he would need it).

Kurt and Blaine have talked about their retirement together, too. I never got the impression Finn and Rachel daydreamed of their future in this much detail or that far along. Kurt and Blaine moving forward together isn’t a derailment, it’s been the plan all along, really. it’s more like returning to the path rather than stepping off it.

I remember commenting on Burt’s reaction to Blaine’s ‘that’s completely different’ in the auditorium as Burt recognizing both the similarities and the differences between Finchel and Klaine. Because despite Finchel being very different from Klaine, whether personally or as a couple, at the time, both proposals were, in essence, an act of desperation. In Finn’s case, it was feeling like he had no goal, not knowing what to do in his future and hanging on the one thing that made sense while in Blaine’s, it was a desperate attempt to reach out to Kurt in order not to lose him. The situation is different and the couples are different but the idea came from the same place.

I like to let myself think that Rachel called Finn when she left the diner to let him know she got Fanny and that Finn will pass with the knowledge that his sacrifice that day in the car was all worth it.

Headcanon accepted. Now excuse me while I sob.

Dear any Finchel fan reading this, I just want to say that, I know that tonight is going to be difficult. I promise that it will be okay and we are all here for you as friends and gleeks. We wish that you too could be celebrating the reconnection of your ship. Much love and many hugs.
