I have recently been replaying Final Fantasy IX, my favourite entry in the series next to FFVI. I keep going back to that game just to be immersed in its gorgeous world, not to mention for its fun characters and beautiful music. However, whenever I research into it more, I'm always saddened that it could have looked even more beautiful than it already is. So much detail was put into the environments, only to have their picture sizes downscaled to fit the PlayStation's 320x240 screen resolution. If you're familiar with how the game looks on the PlayStation, you'd be amazed just how much better it could possibly be.
I sincerely hope one day Square will remaster FFVII, VIII (not counting the PC Steam versions) and IX, (....hell, Chrono Cross too, while they're at it) simply implementing the high-resolution versions of the old backgrounds with some character/texture enhancements, much like they handled FFX and X-2. Although I'm with most of the community when I say I'm not without my reservations and concerns.
I could go on all day about the politics and controversy of it all ever happening, let alone the topic of "remakes" in general (especially when it comes to Final Fantasy), but The FFIX Blog already perfectly sums up my feelings.
