Dear Lumen,

I would like to thank you for your answer to my previous ask (about writing advices).

I feel so excited about all the advices that you gave me and that I read on the writeblr community !

I also can't wait to try this Ulysses app it seems really fun and practical to use ! I just discovered the writeblr community and indeed it's a gold mine of informations and advices.

Have great day / night 😊

Hi darling,

My pleasure! I finally got around to write an in-depth article about the Ulysses app, showcasing my workflow before and after, listing the pros and cons, features, how it works, etc.

This is one post very much interlaced with a more intimate insight into how I write / my system as a writer, both for my blog and my fantasy books, so if you're curious how I mastered my workflow go ahead and check it out.

I also included some snapshots of my setup (theme matching my pink aesthetic of course), perhaps it will inspire other writers to replicate my system and see if it works for them. There is a 2 week free trial, so really you've got nothing to lose by testing the waters.

Personally, I'm in love. I have a billion folders neatly organized, color-coded and icon-customized exactly as I want...

Have a great day ahead fellow writer, and don't be a stranger. Let me know how your progress unfolds! ✏️✨

what do you use to write your stories?

Hi anon, it's a writing app I discovered a week ago and it literally transformed my writing process like.... 🤯 I'm not even kidding. (And I'm notoriously picky when it comes to my writing setup, or anything really.)

Thanks to it, I was finally able to centralize all my writing - books, ebooks, poetry, blogging, everything. Mind you, I have manuscripts (as per previous posts) that are over 100k by general rule, and I've been direly in need of a sustainable, smart setup so I can actually focus on writing instead of playing the where-did-I-save-that-file-again-oh-there guessing game.

It also has the minimalist & customizable interface I prefer, and loads of functionalities like publishing straight to Wordpress (ie. my blog www.sklumen.com) or Medium, both of which I actually use. Endless folders and subfolders to organize my writing in, not to mention all the stats a writer could want one click away?? And these are just a few features. As you can tell, I'm quite enthusiastic about this discovery!

So I'm actually going to write an in-depth article on it soon (next week perhaps?), reviewing the whole app and my new writing process, so stay tuned. ❤️

As a writer, I feel like I'm artistically obligated to spread the word so other creators won't have to slog through antiquated apps for years like I did because I wasn't aware of anything better... But hey, you live and you learn, and that's alright.

There's always room for levelling up, even when it comes to the craft of writing.

When I don't know how else to cope, I write it out. I write through the pain, through the healing, through the grief. I write until the chaotic mess of everyday mundane life is untangled and made sense into an order that works for the universe in my mind, the imaginarium in my soul. I write until everything makes sense again and I'm liberated by the burden of feeling lost, of flowing in currents alien to me; I realize that I have always been and will always be the heroine of my story, and nothing can ever change that. When I write, I'm both the writer and the written, I am both the story and the hero.

There are people out there in this very moment who are in need of your story, your experience, your voice, your energy, that one work of art or book or course or anything else that only you can create. You owe it to both yourself and the universe to show up as your most authentic self, to serve the world with your truth, your magic, your potential. It is your legacy. Make it something you'll be proud of at the end of it all.

Dear new writers,

Before you continue your exciting journey as a writer, remember this: you are a creator, an artist. You are the sole and exclusive owner of the boundless fictional world of your own making. That is your ability, to weave worlds out of thin air, like magic. You may decide to follow a traditional publishing route, or you may choose indie publishing; but before and until you make that choice, you have all the rights to that world, to create, reuse, distribute and so on as you wish.

What I’m trying to say is this. You are the one in power here. You bring something new to the world, granted you make it with heart. Do your research, be smart and savvy, know what you want, and learn the best ways to get it.

Don’t be afraid to set solid boundaries for yourself, to set a value for your art and stand by it. It is your baby, your hard work of perhaps months, years, decades. Know your value as an artist and make decisions accordingly.

Remember, you’re in control… and you’ve got this.

You know that moment when you haven’t written in a while and then get back to your WIP manuscript and you just get that impatient tingly feeling of wanting to see a book/movie/tv show done pronto with your story so you can already see all the characters and scenes and narrative unfolding and not spend another waking moment actually writing it? Yes it’s a mood.

January: Day 20 From a fitness & health perspective, what does your highest self look like? Keep in mind this is about only improving the health of your existing body, not drastically altering its appearance via surgery or other invasive procedures. How fit is your best self - lean like a ballerina, or strong and muscular like a professional athlete? Is she inbetween? In other words, is her focus on agility, strength, or overall light fitness? What does her daily diet (diet as in meal plans, not as in restrictive eating) consist of? What physical activities does she incorporate into her life: yoga, dancing, jogging, weight-lifting, cardio, etc? Defining your ideal fitness goals is the first step to leveling up your body's health, while keeping in mind that these goals should work with your body and should be sustainable and as enjoyable as possible - otherwise, it will not be sustainable long-term because there's no joy in it.

Meet the cast: Kaodhan

As an orphan, Kaodhan grew up deprived of the emotional security of any sort of home as decreed by the enigmatic gods of the otherworld; so it is a natural coping mechanism to take on as much responsibility as possible, to help people in need, to feel needed. “Life is what you make of it” is his motto, and for him responsibility is a way of giving life purpose. When he asked for help, nobody offered it, so he makes sure nobody else has to go through the same helpless circumstances.

Many are intimidated by the enigma that is Xandrias’ leader, and many misunderstand his fears and obsessions – with freedom, with truth and self-control, but those closest to him know that no matter how many times he runs off into the world to embark on another journey into the wilderness, he will always return to Xandrias, where his heart truly belongs.

Hi Lumen! Any more tips for getting over writer's block/writer's hibernation and getting inspired again?

Dear anon,

Indeed I prefer to use the term “artistic hibernation” because 1) it’s kinder, 2) more truthful, 3) because affirmations and words have a great power over our mind. What I mean by this is if you, as a writer, consistently jump to the phrase “Oh no, I have writer’s block again” every time your words don’t flow effortlessly, you’re basically teaching yourself to have that mental block every time you’re not being 100% productive - and that never helps.

Being mindful over the above is the first step, in my experience, to getting inspired again. In today’s day and age, we are constantly assaulted by information, we see influencers displaying in the most aesthetic manner a life that seems set to 100% Productive Mode, but that is an illusion, I assure you. It is a misleading and harmful belief to have, that you need to be at your best all the time, churning out masterpieces. Much like nature itself, we go through waves, through seasons and phases where we are most active and full of renewed energy, and other times when we need to recharge and replenish, having used up our threshold of creativity. And that is ok!

Here and now I will tell you it is perfectly normal and healthy to be gentle with yourself, and allow your body, mind and spirit to recover, in whatever way it needs to. Maybe you like to read books and sleep to recharge. Maybe you need to disconnect from social media for a week or two, live in the present and let yourself be mindful of the chirp of birds, the slow movement of the Sun as it sets, re-attune yourself to the natural rhythm of gentle living. Or maybe you simply need to completely remove the artistic worries from your mind and go on a vacation, let your mind be in a relaxing and receptive mode, so that it can absorb new information. Trust in this natural flow.

Know that there is a reason for everything going on in your body. It is not a broken machine which needs to be coaxed and forced into functioning optimally; it’s an intelligent design which intuitively knows when it’s time to be active, and when it’s time to be passive. Give yourself that rest as part of this healthy mindset, and watch how your creative flow changes. At least, it has worked so for me.

Sincerely, Lumen

How To Write Magnetic Content As A New Blogger (Blogger Series)

So you’ve just finished setting up your blog, now what? There are 5 key things you need in order to make sure your blog is set up for success by creating magnetic content for your new audience. Let’s get right into it!

1. Authenticity

The most important thing you need in order to write magnetic content as a new blogger is authenticity. But what do we mean by authenticity exactly? It means that the value and information you provide to your audience is done so with integrity. It’s not just an ad for a product that you have zero association or belief in.

All the products, services and things you recommend, by default you are associating them with your brand, so if you’re filling your blog with things you don’t believe in, readers will know. If you were in their position, you wouldn’t want to be underestimated either would you? You’d want quality content, not just someone who’s in it for the monetary gains alone. There’s nothing wrong with monetizing your business, your blog, whatever you’re passionate about doing, but it is important to do it with authenticity  – that way you’re setting yourself up for success down the line!

Otherwise, if you’re not exercising caution and setting standards and principles about what you’ll present on your blog, this may become a liability down the line in terms of your reputation and brand. That’s why it’s better to stay on track from the start and not shoot yourself in the foot.

2. Confidence

As humans, we are naturally drawn to strong-minded people who boldly claim their path, we look up to them and admire them because in the end, we all aspire to reach the same level of confidence.

Confidence is magnetic, it relays to others that you... Read more

There’s nothing quite as soul-healing as coming back home to your magical world. To inkstained fingers and scribbling and sketching on paper, whirling up new ideas, playing with watercolors and acrylics and oils. Organizing lists and polishing chapter titles, reading older snippets and connecting the dots to create new ones. Finding the frayed edges of the latest chapter’s latest paragraph, and picking them up one by one to yet again weave a beautiful tapestry that opens the door to my favorite realms. It’s good to be home.
