For the anon who has dry sensitive skin

I highly recommend switching from using a salicylic acid serum 4 times a week to a more gentle lactic acid serum or glycolic acid serum 2-3 times a week, which better suit dry and sensitive skin.

For retinol start using a low percentage either 0.1% or 0.3% paired with a good moisturiser.

I hope this helps!

A little addition to the skincare ask 🎀 Thanks for chiming in!

Hii^^ I have dry sensitive skin and I’ve been thinking on trying out retinol but i’m also using salicylic acid ( serum 4 times a week nightly) and vitamin C (serum in the morning)

i use spf consistently but i’m not sure on how to incorporate it into my routine?

Do I switch between it and Bha (Pm) and keep using Vit C daily or what do you think i should do?

i still want to incorporate all 3 of them into my routine

Hi flower,

I'm not an expert or licensed specialist, I'm just going to share how I incorporate it into my routine from the research I've done online.

Example routine, in order:
  • Monday AM: Vitamin C > sunscreen
  • Monday PM: SA cleanser > moisturizer
  • Tuesday AM: Vitamin C > sunscreen
  • Tuesday PM: moisturizer > Retinol (depends if you prefer to apply moisturizer and then retinol, or combine the two, whatever works for you)
  • Wednesday AM: Vit C > sunscreen
  • Wednesday PM: BHA > moisturizer

Rinse repeat.

Explanation:

In the morning SPF is essential of course. And Vit C is best used in the morning, as it has antioxidant properties and protects your skin better from the Sun, moreso if combined with sunscreen. But if you combine Vit C with Retinol or other harsh products, it can cause skin irritation or sensitivity (source).

Meanwhile Retinol should only be used in the evenings (if you use in the morning, even with sunscreen it still exposes your sensitized & freshly regenerating skin to the sunlight which can cause issues). And same with any chemical exfoliants like SA (salicylic acid) or BHA (beta hydroxy acids) - only use them in the evening to let the skin regenerate and heal before exposing to sunlight again.

And lastly, it's not recommended to use chemical exfoliants and apply retinol right after - it's too much for the skin, so it's best to do only one per day. Retinol one evening, exfoliating next evening, etc, as per the routine above.

Hope this helps! 🎀

I thought I’d share my latest habits so that it may hopefully inspire others as well.

Starting with the Scorpio Full Moon from 15/05/2022, I decided to challenge myself every day with new habits and routines that propell me in the direction of my goals, but also improve my wellbeing and mental health (we’re all about the holistic glow up here, ladies).

1. Matcha latte

I started drinking matcha daily, along with lemon water. I already drink black tea for the energy kick (or green if I don’t need extra energy) every morning instead of coffee, along with a glass of water. I tried matcha latte after being curiously spurred by all that girl reels on IG and honestly, I fell in love with it. I don’t resonate with running with the crowd for trends, but matcha is a good one. It has amazing benefits for your health, tastes great, and it’s also green.

2. Daily greens

Adding a big, nutritious salad to my lunch every day. Packed with goodies and topped with my favorite dressing: tahini + lemon. If you haven’t tried this combo, and want to incorporate more salads into your diet, you should definitely give it a taste.

3. Going to the gym with a trainer

Hiring a personal trainer and going to the gym 2-3 times a week has been a longtime aspiration of mine.

I have wanted to make going to the gym part of my lifestyle for a few years now, but after several failed attempts, I realized it had to be my way in order to be sustainable long term. I have high standards and expect quality for any service I go for, and as such have not been satisfied with the trainers I’ve worked with in the past (I can write a separate post on that if anyone is interested). Even so, I refused to give up!

I kept switching trainers until I finally found the perfect one for me, and I’m so happy I did. I know myself well enough that I do need a mentor to guide me. Worrying about researching posture, anatomy, movements, what to eat or how to formulate my workout plan, was not the way to go for me. I prefer an expert to do it for me, and all I have to do is show up and get the exercises done, so I can spend the rest of my time & energy on my other goals. Besides, having a mentor waiting for you at the gym, who motivates and uplifts you, makes a huge difference in creating consistency & good habits when you’re right at the beginning!

4. Jogging, long walks

Doing cardio (jogging, jump rope, long walks) at least once a week. I have found that cardio, particularly jogging, does wonders for my body and my mental health. It boosts mental clarity, alleviates anxiety, clears my head. That boost of endorphins is better than anything you can do in the four walls of the house, there’s only so much you can journal, blog or paint your way out of negative thought patterns.

I’m a nocturnal animal, so I knew that integrating jogging into my routine would not be sustainable long-term if I forced myself to do it in the morning. (Scheduling it for the evening when I don’t need to slather myself in SPF50 is also an appreciated perk.)

I’ve also been making it a focus to add yoga and stretching into my routine – daily if possible, but especially after strenuous workouts.

5. Leveling up my skincare

Using sunscreen, Vitamin C serum and retinol in my skincare regimen consistently. Vitamin C is a new one, but I’m enjoying La Roche Posay’s Vit C10 serum so far, after seeing it recommended by every dermatologist on Youtube.

6. More homemade food

Less takeout, more homemade food. Cooking is not a favorite pastime, but I love wholesome, home-cooked food made with love – it does have a different energy than when you just order in. I’ve been enjoying baking bread, looking up vegan recipes and just creating meals from scratch.

7. Rescheduling negative thoughts

Any negative thoughts after 9 PM are postponed until next day. No use stressing over things you can’t do anything about, and which may be caused simply by fatigue! All you need is some chamomille tea, a hot shower, and a good night sleep. Tackle tomorrow’s worries tomorrow.

Hi darling!

Skincare is a tricky thing, because everybody's skin is different and as such has different needs. What works for one person may not work for another.

Firstly, you should start with my top skincare tips post so you understand the basics, function of ingredients, and which products are essential or not. You can also check out my skincare tag if you're interested in additional reading.

That being said, here are the basics from my routine and what currently works for me:

Morning routine:

Vitamin C serum: La Roche Posay - Vit C10 This helps brighten complexion, softens skin and helps to fade any blemishes, scars, etc. Pro tip: keep your Vit C serum in the fridge, Vit C tends to oxidize and turn orange with time, even if i doesn't affect its efficiency.

Sunscreen: La Roche Posay - Anthelios for Face SPF50 This is what I've been using for 2 years now, it's popular for good reason. Although I will say they recently changed the formula from completely dry to a little oily, and I prefer the former.

Night routine:

Cleanser: CeraVe - SA Smoothing Cleanser This is a chemical exfoliant (with Salicylic Acid) which is great for acne or break-out prone skin, to be used 2-3 times a week. For daily use I recommend CeraVe's classic cleanser, the Hydrating Cleanser.

Moisturizer: Bioderma - Hydrabio Riche Gentle, moisturizing, rich but not greasy. I always go back to this. (It's for dry skin, but if other readers have oily skin, try the Hydrabio Legere version instead.)

Skin-barrier repair (optional): La Roche Posay - Cicaplast Baume B5 This is a holy grail if you have damaged skin from using too many products, exfoliants, sunburn, etc. It's very gentle and soothing, and really does improve skin overnight. You can use it for face, body, even lips, but for that I prefer the product below.

Skin-barrier repair for lips (optional): La Roche Posay - Cicaplast Baume for Lips This is my go-to for intense hydration and repair (ie. chapped lips, wore drying lipstick all day, etc). Leave it on overnight and you'll wake up with smooth, plush lips ready for the day.

Retinol: The Ordinary - Retinol 0.2% in Squalane, CeraVe - Resurfacing Retinol Serum, La Roche Posay - Effaclar Adapalene 0.1% Topical Retinoid Retinol essentially regenerates your skin, helps with fine lines, wrinkles, scarring, etc. I'm still looking for the best retinol product, but I would recommend either of the above, all of which are direct recommendations I've found by dermatologists via Youtube or IG.

Conclusions
  • The only essentials you need are: cleanser, sunscreen, moisturizer. Everything else helps, but isn't necessary.
  • If you choose to add new products to your skincare routine, always add 1 at a time. That way you'll know which one is or isn't working for you.
  • Create the skincare routine that works for you. Don't go running after trends and trying out a hundred different things. Only test 1 product at a time, and when something works for you, keep it in your routine.
  • If you can afford it, reach out to a dermatologist to recommend products that are tailored to your needs. Most of the products listed were recommended by my dermatologist for mine.
  • If that's not an option currently, start following board-certified dermatologists on social media instead of taking advice from random people online as fact. You'll learn so much from their tips, plus it's free! I like watching Dr. Dre and Shereene Idriss, they are both entertaining and educational.

Hope this proves helpful, and let me know how your routine comes together. 💜

Currently focusing on leveling up everything to do with skin: tools, products, make-up, skincare routine, treatments, as recommended by my dermatologist. I'll be sharing my tips & experiences along the way. Here's my list which I'm going through one by one, testing products and if I should integrate them into my permanent routine: 💅✨

  • moisturizer (found some good products, still exploring)
  • chemical exfoliant (found holy grail)
  • retinol (currently testing)
  • sunscreen (found holy grail)
  • chemical peels (tbd)
  • dermabrasion (tbd)
  • high quality, cruelty-free make-up for pale skin (still exploring)

Skincare tips: Retinol

  • If unsure, start with the most gentle sort of retinol (retinol esther, or the 2nd most gentle, pure retinol - read how it works here).
  • Consistency over intensity. It's better to use a gentle product consistently over weeks, months, years, than it is to use an aggressive/strong product over a brief period.
  • Less is more.
  • You can use retinol regardless of your skin color, just start slow and on the low, gentle end of retinols.
  • What it does: thickens the skin, encourages cell turnover / skin regeneration. Smooths wrinkles and fine lines over long-term consistent use.
  • How much to apply: a pea-size amount is sufficient for the entire face.
  • When to apply: in the evening, after doing your skincare routine, on a clean & dry face. Avoid applying in the morning, as retinol makes your skin sensitive to sun damage, and retinol itself also breaks down under the sun, making it less efficient in the mornings.
  • How often: 2-3 times a week (ie. Monday - Wednesday - Saturday). Keep up this routine to see if your skin tolerates it well, if it does (and this may take even a year to adjust) you can increase the frequency to every night.
  • What season to use: you can use retinol all-year round, just make sure you are protecting your skin with sunscreen, as it makes your skin photo sensitive.
  • When using retinol, be careful with these areas (as in the skin there is more sensitive, so apply less product + more gentle retinol): around the mouth, neck, chest.
  • The only time you need to use retinols specially made for the eye area, is if you have very sensitive skin and standard retinols irritate the delicate skin around your eyes.
  • Be careful with using any acids* in your routine. Do not use them at the same time (ie. same evening). Alternate the days for each: if you apply retinol one evening, use acids the next evening only.
  • If you have underlying skin conditions (eczema, rosacea, etc), check with your dermatologist first before testing out retinol.
  • Retinol is not recommended to be used during pregnancy.
  • Don't exfoliate on the same nights you use retinol (ie. salicylic acid or other acids*), as it's too aggressive on the skin.
  • For most retinol products, it is best to apply moisturizer before, to use as a buffer, and then apply the retinol. This includes the chest & neck areas.

Lumen's Top Skincare Tips

  1. You don't need expensive products or a 15-step skincare regimen to have good skin. It is enough to cleanse and moisturize. Anything else is extra: an exfoliant helps with smoothing the skin and removing dead skin cells. A toner helps balance PH and tighten the skin. Sunscreen protects your skin from sun damage. Serums can add a boost of moisture, or help targeted areas in targeted ways (evening out skintone, lightening dark spots, etc) based on your needs. Vitamin C brightens your complexion and also helps your sunscreen become more potent. Retinols help regenerate the skin by encouraging cell turnover, thus improving fine lines and wrinkles, and so on... All of these things help improve your skin, but they are not essential.
  2. Use sunscreen regardless of your skin color. You can vary the SPF depending on the season, using SPF50 for summer, and reverting to SPF30 for the other seasons, but try to protect your skin. An important thing to note is that you don't need to slather yourself in sunscreen all day every day even indoors; just be responsible with your use of it, ie. if you know you'll be spending more than 15-30 min outside, put a little something on. Avoid extremes, balance is best.
  3. No, using sunscreen doesn't interfere with your vitamin D absorption, according to dermatologists.
  4. No, you don't need to cleanse twice a day. It is enough to cleanse once at night to remove the build-up from the day. Doing so again in the morning only strips your skin of its natural oils, which might cause more issues (oily skin/sebum, dry skin etc).
  5. Chemical exfoliants (gently exfoliating the skin) are better for the skin than physical ones (which can cause tears in the skin after long-term use).
  6. Aloe vera gel is great for soothing irritated skin, sunburns, as well as generally helping regenerate the skin barrier.
  7. Treatments like chemical peels and dermabrasions are best to be scheduled outside of the hottest season (autumn or winter is best) - as it is regenerating, the skin is more sensitive and the sun can cause more damage.
  8. Acids can be very beneficial for the skin (lactic acid, salicylic acid, etc), but you should be very attentive with how you use them! It's not an area where you should DIY with mix-and-match approach to see what works, I've heard many stories of people getting burns, inflammations and irritation because they were using too many acids, essentially destroying the skin's barrier. My rule of thumb is stick to one product, and if I need something more I will do some research + ask my dermatologist to confirm if the product is suitable for my skin & needs - or the other way around, depending on the situation.
  9. If you find something that works for you, stick to it. You don't have to keep switching up products because that's the trendy skincare thing to do. No, your skin doesn't "get used to it and stop responding", that's not how skin works.
  10. Even in skincare, less is more. Overexfoliating, overcleansing, using too many acids and products in general can cause more issues than if you have a simple cleanse+moisturize routine.
  11. When trying out new products, try to test 1 product at a time, by integrating it into your routine. That way you can tell if it's working for you or not. If you test multiple new products, you won't be able to tell which one is working for you or not.
  12. Staying hydrated shows in your skin's health, we all know this. Drink at least 1-2 liters of water every day. It flushes out the toxins and really does give you that glow!
  13. Drinking green tea regularly is also great for clearing your skin. I like to start my mornings with 1-2 cups of green tea or black tea every day.
  14. Moderation and an open mind will help you in skincare too. If you're passionate about natural skincare and organic ingredients, don't be wary of anything that contains "chemicals". It's good to be open minded, educate yourself and understand the many options out there and how they can benefit you.
  15. On the same subject - if you're strict on dermatologically-tested, scientifically-proven professional skincare products, it's okay to experiment with natural ingredients too. It's a false belief that every oil is bad or will congest your skin, or that essential oils are all irritants and whatnot. Each has special qualities and attributes, hence why it's important to do your research before trying them out according to their respective instructions.
  16. There's no such thing as perfect skin, don't be fooled by all the filters which are so standard on social media. Everyone has pores, everyone has some scars or dark spots or congested pores at some point. Just take care of your skin, do what you can, and be confident as you are! The secret to good skin is not in luxury creams, 30 step routines, complicated rituals and expensive facials. The secret is simply a combination of selfcare + selflove. Love your skin, treat it with care, and honor it by being confident in it.

Roses are my absolute favorite flowers for their fragrance, beauty and skincare benefits all in one. Beside hazelwater, rosewater is my go-to toner to regulate PH of the skin, toning as well as the refreshing glow it gives. You know the rosewater is effective when after the first use your skin already feels tighter. I always choose mine in organic versions, to use skincare that is as clean and pure as possible.

Lumen’s Skincare Routine

Morning:

  1. Refresh: splash face with cold/icy water for a couple of minutes.
  2. Toner: spray rosewater toner over face and neck.
  3. Moisturizer: apply a light oil (sweet almond or rosehip oil) to maintain moisturized skin as well as help in the next step with massage.
  4. Massage: use Rose Quartz face roller methodically, always starting from neck to the top of my forehead. This helps with: puffiness, lymph drainage, skin elasticity and just all around feels amazing in the morning, especially if you run the roller under cold water. Also, I heard in a specialist’s video that your skin is ‘open to suggestion’, and it’s true. These daily movements / exercises / massages sculpt your face with time (within reason).
  5. Perfume (an optional yet luxurious step): as last step I like to apply DIY oil-based roller perfume on my pulse points, namely the sides of my neck and wrists. It’s my signature self-made perfume containing my favorite elements and was so much fun to create, as well as easy. You just need a scent-free oil base (like sweet almond, or grapeseed) and add 5-10 drops of preferred essential oils - and voila, done.

Night:

  1. Cleanser: natural, gentle soap which is free of preservatives, fragrance, etc.
  2. Toner: a few sprays of rosewater or hazelwater.
  3. Moisturizer: a serum I created from multiple oils (argan, sweet almond, avocado).
  4. Massage: depending on my mood, I will use a Gua Sha jade for methodical face massage, or just use my hands following the same movements. Whether jade roller, Gua sha or massage via hands, this is always done after applying moisturizer/oils on the skin, otherwise you’re just tugging and scraping at your skin.

I made some small changes to my skincare routine and frankly my skin’s never been better. I invested in a collection of pure, organic oils (almond, argan, avocado, shea butter, castor), a Rose Quartz face roller, and a jade Gua Sha, and started implementing them into my routine with frequent massages and more frequent moisturizing than usual. It leaves my skin glowy, clear, soft and always moisturized.
