Why is "Die with a Smile" the perfect song to imagine Jean waking up form a terribly long nightmare, panting, tears already falling down his cheeks and mixing with the sweat drenching his skin, and about to have a panic attack, and then he looks to his side, and there he finds Marco, who was sleeping peacefully up until just a second ago, but has now woken up, and is already reaching for Jean, but Jean's brain is only able to process the need to hug him tight, tight, tight, so tight as if the world would end if he ever let go, because it had already ended once, in that nightmare of his, and he's not going back to that hell, he's not going back to a world without Marco

I always considered "counterattack mankind" as Jean & Marco's, and Sasha's unofficial theme.

With a bright future ahead, Marco represented the hope of those within the walls, mankind's beating heart. And he was crushed.

Jean's never ending moral struggle represented humanity itself. If he failed, everyone would perish. But if he succeeded, then there'd still be some hope left.

Then there's the orchestral version, which belongs to Sasha, who reminded us all that we're all part of something bigger than us, we all belong, and that having each other's backs is what makes us human.

It's no coincidence that this soundtrack was played in key scenes (Marco's "you're not a strong person and that's why you're special" speech to Jean, and Sasha's selfless charge against a titan to save Kaja) back when aot was still about humanity's struggle to survive against an unknown doom, and celebrated that struggle.

Characters like Jean, Marco and Sasha are reminders that mankind is worth fighting for. That each one of us is special, that we're not alone, and as flawed and weak as we might be, that we can do anything.
