It just doesn't make sense at all for Daryl and Carol to stay platonic. You're telling me that in 12 whole years, Daryl and Carol just never once thought about each other in a romantic way. Bc if they did, they'd *definitely* want to go there. It's literally laughable to think that two unrelated, sexually compatible adults with that much love, respect, and chemistry just wouldn't go there in their heads.

They didn't grow up together. They met when they were in their 40s. Having a sibling-like relationship would be if they're sexually incompatible or if they knew each other as children.

I get that people want to see more male-female friendships depicted on screen, but keeping this one platonic just isn't realistic. You're essentially trying to deny the sexuality of two allosexual adults who deserve to have sexually fulfilling relationships 🙃. The beautiful thing about them is that they *can* be platonic, but they don't have to be. They'd still love each other just as much if they aren't romantic, but that doesn't mean they don't get to be romantic as well.

And that brings me to the prevalent issues with de-sexualising middle-aged women, in particular.

One day, I will be a middle-aged woman, and I'd like to see what I have to look forward to represented on-screen. Currently, I'm being told by this narrative that it would just be impossible, out of the question, a thing of no existence, for a man of my same age, who I am compatible with in every way and who loves me in every other way, to love me romantically. How nice.

It's a joke because Carol is literally one of the hottest women to exist. And the one man who she loves with her whole heart, and who also loves her, doesn't want to share intimacy with her. Lol, ok.

PaleyFest 2024

TWD DD: TBOC panel. Spoilers alert - non linear thoughts below.

First time at PaleyFest - small venue, I was in the third row. They were quite strict about no pics, but I snuck a few .

We saw the fourth episode of TBOC, and it was much better than I expected. Carol has some epic scenes and some funny dialogue, although I'm looking forward to a re-watch as I couldn't understand some of the non-native English speakers dialogue without my trusty subtitles.

The long-awaited reunion scene happened early in the episode to thunderous applause, Carol met Isabelle for a few seconds the end of all the nunsense, and Genet says au revoir, hoisted on her own petard.

Then a long schlep through the French countryside to meet the older couple seen in clips - you all are going to love this couple, especially the woman (sorry, bad with names!) who takes the time to give Carol a much-needed hug.

Caryl's dynamic was a bit off (and I think intentionally so) as they try to find their way back to their friendship. They'll get there. The parallels between Ezekial/Carol's and Isabelle/Daryl's relationship is very strongly drawn: Laurent is the French Henry that brought these 2 together - they're not soulmates. I know I'm forgetting stuff that stood out to me while I was watching, and I'll kick myself during tomorrow's re-watch.

The panel was fairly typical - everyone seemed in a good mood, nothing really major was revealed. Lots of talk about the reunion, the new type of walker, what it was like to film in France (and Norman really needs a new story rather than repeating for at least the third time about how the French film differently than they did back in Georgia). The host asked the audience if we were sad to see Isabelle die and I'll admit to saying "No" a bit loud.

Chad Colman was in the audience in the first row, and both Mel and Norman were excited to see him there and there were a few exchanges between them.

Mel didn't stick around for signing/photographs although she did stop to sign something and for a quick pic with the family in front of me as she left the theater. I was so glad for them as they had traveled from Germany and were heading to Atlanta to see the sets either today or tomorrow, so I'm sure it was a highlight for them. I saw her leave the building but she didn't stop there either. She looked great, though (and I really loved her boots!)

Tribeca Film Festival - DD: TBOC

So I just got home and really enjoyed the first episode of TWD: Daryl Dixon - The Book of Carol. The show runners asked people not to spoil too much about the episode or the discussion, and since I work in a creative field, I'm going to adhere to their wishes although I realize people are going to people. Super minor spoilers ahead, so ignore if you want to wait until September.

Key takeaways in no particular order:

  • Episode 1 is heavy on Carol which is SUCH a relief as I find the French cast a bit dull at times
  • Carol does something so morally...questionable that I get why people don't love her but damn it was great to see Melissa McBride act her ass off
  • I'm fairly certain (spoiler here) that Cherokee roses don't grow in Maine
  • The talk afterwards only lasted a half hour and not much was revealed. I took a super short video of Melissa that I'll try to post although I'm sure someone has posted the entire talk by the time I upload.
  • Norman spoiled that Caryl meet up in Episode 2, but in such a way who knows if that is true...
  • Norman and Melissa did a lot of communicating via eyes and mouthed words - it was too cute to watch
  • There was talk of "thing being resolved" and about how the original series left things unsaid that gave my little shippers heart some hope
  • Ask me stuff if you want, I'll try to answer.
