Walden BACC
Tess stared as her wife sat up in her coffin, her mouth smeared with blood. She was pale as death but she was awake, and she gazed up at her with a mixture of confusion and fright.
"Hayden! Yes, it's me! I can't believe it, you really are back! I wasn't sure if it would work..."
Tess felt giddy with joy.
She had brought Hayden back! Nothing else mattered, nothing at all!
"What do you mean? If what would work?"
Her wife did not seem entirely aware of her change, or the events which had transpired. She gazed down at her hands as though seeing them for the first time, then touched her fingers to her lips. She pulled them away, frowning at the red smear left behind.
"Is that...Tess, what am I doing here? Tell me what's going on!"
Tess threw her arms around her wife, luxuriating in the feel of her body against hers. For this, she would have given almost anything.
"I don't...I don't understand...I feel so strange...."
Tess remembered how confusing and disorienting the world felt after the change. Everything looked different; everything felt different: the colors were richer, the smells stronger, the light blinding to the eyes.
It could be overwhelming.
"What is the last thing you remember?"
"I was at the clinic...we were talking, and then..."
"Your body couldn't take the strain any longer. It began shutting down, your organs failing one by one. We tried to resuscitate you but...you died."
"- is alive, and well. We saved her, but couldn't save you. So, I..."
Suddenly, Tess was afraid. What if Hayden did not want this, and would end up hating her for it? She wanted to enjoy the reunion a little longer, but the consequences of her actions would not be delayed.
"I turned you into a vampire."
"I couldn't let you go. Forgive me, but I couldn't!"
"Tess...there's nothing to forgive."
"I - But you understand what I did to you..."
"You saved my life. So what if I must give up regular food and stay out of the sun? I was never big on tanning anyway."
"There is a bit more to being a vampire than that!"
"And I'll have you to teach me everything: how to be like you, feeding on plasma juice instead of blood, managing my urges so I can lead a normal life, more or less. With our daughter. Like we've always dreamed."
It all seemed too good to be true, but when Hayden pressed her mouth to hers, Tess could have wept with happiness. Hayden tasted of blood and her lips were cold, but the kiss was genuine and full of passion, and Tess felt a hunger stir within her that had not stirred for a long time.
Why did she have the the distinct sensation that it was all a dream?
That none of it was real?
