The Many Faces of Simon Lewis
Today marks the publication of Simon Lewis’ very own collection of short stories. Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy traces his path to becoming a Shadowhunter. Simon has had a lot of changes throughout the Mortal Instrument series starting out as Clary’s best friend and unrequited love interest, to a vampire and now a Shadowhunter-in-training.
So we’ve decided to run through all of our favourite faces of Simon Lewis including book, movie and TV versions of him.
Simon, the Human: Sure, Clary only has eyes for Jace, so it’s easy to forget that Simon is a heart-throb in his own right. And unlike Jace, he’s oblivious to it — we’re looking at you flirty-girl-in-the-coffee-shop. Plus, who hasn’t fantasized about kissing a musician? This is the Simon we’re first introduced to, and we love him for his kind heart. Simon is the ultimate loyal friend — who else would sit through a bad slam poetry night to support you?
Robert Sheehan (movie) as Simon Lewis: We loved Robbie as Nathan Young on Misfits, so we weren’t surprised by the ease in which he tapped into the quirky/dorky personality of Simon Lewis. Robbie brings his signature wit and humour to “movie Simon,” and is without a doubt the scene-stealer of The Mortal Instruments movie.
Simon, the Vampire: Have you ever met a Jewish Vampire before Simon Lewis? Simon’s transition into a vampire is a period of struggle and growth; he doesn’t associate with other vampires and tries to maintain human routines. And although Simon changes physically (he no longer needs glasses, had super strength and speed), he’s still the same nervous and insecure guy who’s not quite sure how to casually date two women at once.
Alberto Rosende (TV) as Simon Lewis: We may be biased here, we got to meet Alberto on the set of @shadowhuntersseries, and he’s just as good looking in person as he is on screen! The beauty of a TV series (vs Movie) is you get to spend more time developing a character — and this has definitely worked in Alberto’s favour. He’s just the right amount of awkward, nerdy, dorky and best friend material with a hint of a selfish side; we think Alberto has captured the many sides of Simon’s personality perfectly.
Simon, the Shadowhunter: The events of City of Heavenly Fire left Simon stripped of his memories, and Simon isn’t sure who he is anymore. So when the Shadowhunter Academy reopens, Simon throws himself into this new world of demon-hunting — only he’ll have to deal with the prejudices against him for being an ex-Downworlder. Find out what sort of Shadowhunter Simon will be, and the path he took to get there in Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy.
