Who can’t wait for Lord of Shadows by Cassandra Clare, out May 23, 2017!?
You seemed like maybe you didn’t want to be alone…
For all the MarkxCristina fans out there:)
(26/30)
Cristina spread her hands apart in bewilderment, and winced. Mark’s expression turned to one of concern.
“You’re not in pain?” he said.
“No,” she said. “Are you?”
“You’re near me,” he said. “There is no reason for me to hurt.”
— Lord of Shadows
A Q&A With Lady Midnight Author, Cassandra Clare:
1. If you could choose anyone, who would be your parabatai?
Probably Holly Black.
2. When you first started writing City of Bones, did you envision the Shadowhunter world being so extensive – spawning three different series?
Not exactly. I knew I was working with a big world, but I didn’t realize I was going to keep having ideas for for novels I wanted to set in it.
3. Will any of The Mortal Instruments be making appearances in Lady Midnight?
You’ll have to wait and see!
4. Can you tell us a little bit about the Last Hours snippet you shared with everyone on social? What is in store for that book? Will it be a series? Who is that series revolving around?
The Last Hours is set in Edwardian London. It follows the children of the characters from the Infernal Devices: James and Lucie Herondale, Cordelia Carstairs, Matthew Fairchild, Anna and Christopher Lightwood, among others. TLH will be a trilogy, and it is partly inspired by the Charles Dickens novel Great Expectations.
5. Do you ever think you’ll write another series of books outside of the Shadowhunters world?
I already am! I’m co-authoring a five book middle grade series, Magisterium, with Holly Black. The third book will be out in September. Magisterium tells the story of a kid who has been raised to hate and fear magicians, only to end up attending magic school himself. It’s been fun to work on a project with Holly.
6. What was the writing process like for The Bane Chronicles and The Shadowhunter Academy short stories? Did you have a hard time with other authors writing within your world and with your characters?
The hardest part is making sure everyone is solid on the facts of the world, so we can preserve consistency from story to story. Mostly I’m just excited to see what other authors come up with when they write about the world I spend so much time thinking about!
YOUR FAN QUESTIONS ANSWERED:
1. Hi, from the Atlantic coast of Canada! When did you discover your love of writing? @JessicaConnors
I can’t remember exactly. I’ve loved making up stories for as long as I can remember. When I was about thirteen, I wrote a 1,000 page romantic epic called The Beautiful Cassandra, based on the story Jane Austen wrote about her sister when she was twelve. It was terrible, but boy did I have fun writing it.
2. Aside from demons, does the book, Lady Midnight, introduce other evil creatures as well? - Mawie Sue
There are definitely some unusual enemies in the Dark Artifices. I can’t say more without getting into spoiler territory!
3. Will the Dark Artifices be a series of instruments similar to ‘The Mortal Instruments’? - Jamari 518
The Dark Artifices are not physical objects like the Mortal Instruments were. You’ll find out what they are in the series!
4. Cassandra, what recent books have you been reading? Are there any that are your favourite? - Jill
I just read Salt to the Sea, by Ruta Septys, and I enjoyed it. Other recent favorites are If You Could Be Mine by Sara Farizan, and Dumplin’ by Julie Murphy.

3 on a YA Theme + 2: Diversity in #YA
As we all know it’s very hard to find diverse novels within the young adult genre, or any genre for that matter. But we at Simon and Schuster Canada believe we have a great line up for diverse books when it comes to race, sexuality, bullying and much more.
We Are The Ants by Shaun David Hutchinson
We Are the Ants is a realistic contemporary novel with a twist. Henry deals with many of the modern issues facing teens today: depression, losing his boyfriend, family troubles, and bullying. The twist is Henry has been abducted by Alien’s and he has the choice to end it all. This book touches on MANY teen related topics, and we think is a wonderful change in the YA genre.
The Scorpion Rules by Erin Bow
In the future, the UN has brought back an ancient way to keep the peace. The children of world leaders are held hostage—if a war begins, they pay with their lives. Not only does this book have a fantastic love triangle, where a boy and a girl are both vying for the same girl, but it also brimming with racial diversity. It’s perfect if you’re looking for a strong science fiction novel, with a heck of cast of characters.
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz
When Aristotle and Dante meet at the swimming pool, they seem to have nothing in common. But as the loners start spending time together, they discover that they share a special friendship—the kind that changes lives and lasts a lifetime. Aristotle and Dante discover that you shouldn’t ashamed of any type of love - whether it be familial or romantic.
Stand-Off by Andrew Smith
Ryan Dean should be concentrating on his future, but so far he is haunted by his past, the extremely high expectations his coach has for him and avoiding Nico, his dead friends brother. Sexuality, coming of age and mental illness are all discussed within the second installment in the Winger duo.
The Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare
Everyone knows the portmanteau (or ship) known as Malec, but really what does that mean in a diversity post. Magnus, and Alec, a warlock and teen Shadowhunter, become more than allies in The Mortal Instruments series. Although based in a fantasy world, Alec goes through some life changing choices, like coming to terms with his sexuality, disappointing his parents and family heritage, as well as being true to himself.
So there you have it! Spice up your reading list this year, and start adding a whole wack of great YA fiction, with a ton of diversity in it.

These 4 young adult novels are out between January and March 2016, and we cannot wait for everyone to read them!
See why these books are all the buzz for the 2016 new year:
- The Impostor Queen by Sarah Fine
- Unhooked by Lisa Maxwell

This is one of the most beautiful trios in all of YA history (obviously, I’m excluding Harry Potter since it’s not YA).
I love this art *swoon*
3 on a YA Theme: Shadowhunters
With the new Shadowhunters TV show coming up, as well as the next installment in the Shadowhunter series - Lady Midnight - we thought it would be a great idea to suggest other titles that are similar to that of the Shadowhunter theme.
Underworlders, Urban Fantasy and the Supernatural all play into these books as well as the Mortal Instruments series.

Sneak Peak: Lady Midnight Excerpt
Its finally here, the sneak peak to Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare we’ve all been waiting for.
Sneak Peak:
Normally if Julian told her he didn’t need her with him, or that he had to do something alone, she wouldn’t have given it a second thought. Sometimes events necessitated splitting up.
But the night before had solidified her feeling of unease. She didn’t know what was going on with Jules. She didn’t know if he didn’t want her with him, or did but was angry with her or angry with himself or both.
She knew only that the Fair Folk were dangerous, and there was no way Julian was facing them alone.
“I’m going,” she said, and headed toward the door. She stopped to take down Cortana, which was hanging beside it.
“Emma,” said Diana, her voice tight with meaning. “Be careful.”
The last time faeries had been in the Institute, they had helped Sebastian Morgenstern wrench the soul from the body of Julian’s father. They had taken Mark.
Emma had carried Tavvy and Dru to safety. She had helped save the lives of Julian’s younger brothers and sisters. They had barely escaped alive.
But Emma hadn’t had years of training then. She hadn’t killed a single demon herself, not when she was twelve. She hadn’t spent years training to fight and kill and defend.
There was no way she was hanging back now.
