McBride’s widely lauded novel is full of fragmented, floating sentences that sometimes feel like only gestures at sentences, like gestures at the things under thoughts, that real, pre-language stuff. It’s hard going at first, but once you let the language wash over you and form a rhythm, the book blossoms into a gorgeous stream of word and thought.

We are getting VERY excited about the release of Eimear McBride's debut novel, A Girl Is a Half-formed Thing, this month! To pass the time, we've put together a list of other spell-binding debut novels.

  • Galveston by Nic PizzolattoA dark and visceral read from the creator, writer, and executive producer of the HBO crime series True Detective. Need we say more?
  • Through the Woods by Emily Carroll: Hauntingly beautiful and creepy, award-winning comic creator Emily Carroll debuts with this collection of 5 beautiful graphic stories. A must-read for all.
  • I Am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes: This astonishing debut thriller has been hailed as the best book of the year by too many to count. With a Goodreads rating of 4.25 rating, we're sure you'll feel the same way too.
  • Mating for Life by Marissa StapleyThis well-written, emotionally-charged novel is enchanting from beginning to end as it explores love, marriage, motherhood, independence and family relationships.
  • We Are Not Ourselves by Matthew Thomas: An incredible vivid and realistic portrait of family life. Epic in scope, heroic in character, masterful in prose, We Are Not Ourselves heralds the arrival of a major new talent in contemporary fiction.
  • Good in Bed by Jennifer Weiner: This list wouldn't be complete without the novel that started it all for Weiner. This book is highly intelligent, with a successful heroine Cannie Shapiro. It's so good that when it ends, it feels like you've lost a friend.

Happy reading! :)

Fellow bookworms, be prepared to add some titles to your “to-read” list on Goodreads! Here’s a list of some of our most intriguing fiction coming early next year. We know it’s a little soon, but we just can’t contain our excitement.

  • The Deep by Nick Cutter: Nick’s previous title, The Troop, “scared the hell” out of Stephen King. Part horror, part psychological nightmare, this one is sure to have you sleeping with the lights on.
  • Blown Red by Susan Philpott: Loved The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo? You’ll love this.
  • The Damned by Andrew Pyper: A dark thriller about a survivor of a near-death experience who is haunted by his beautiful, vindictive twin sister. Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn calls Pyper “smart, thrilling, utterly unnerving.”
  • The Long Hello by Cathie Borrie: An incredibly touching memoir of a daughter caring for a mother with dementia. A beautiful and inspiring read.
  • Neil Flambe and the Bard’s Banquet: Another hilarious masterpiece in the series by one of our favourite authors.

 Happy reading!
