Happy Friday, Bookworms! Here’s what the team at Simon & Schuster Canada is reading.

Andrea, Digital Marketing Associate: I’m currently re-reading Kim Harrison’s The Drafter before I dig into the second book in the series, The Operator. I love any story line that involves time travel, and Peri Reed is the epitome of strong kick-ass female protagonist that readers all love and need. I’m falling in love with these characters all over again and am picking up on details I missed the first time around. Bonus: the prequel novella Sideswiped is included in the mass market paperback (which I had previously not read).

Siobhan, Editorial: I’ve stepped beyond my normal reading horizon and have been reading Jasper Forde’s dystopian novel, Shades of Grey—and no, it’s nothing like Fifty Shades of Grey. It’s a fun and highly weird tale set in a futuristic world where all aspects of society are ruled by the colours you can and cannot see. I’ve only just dipped in, but it’s been a treat so far!

Jordyn, Sales Operations Assistant: I just finished The Hating Game, by Sally Thorne, which is a steamy romance novel featuring two coworkers who totally hate each other. It’s hard to find a good love/hate relationship book because the transition from hating to dating can be easily unbelievable. This book, however, totally nails it! I love the intensity between Lucy and Josh, and while the sexy stuff is slow-burning, there are quite a few lines in there that make you pause and say “daaaaamn”. I’m not going to lie; I had to take a water break at a couple points. Highly recommend!

Happy Friday, Bookworms! Here’s what the team at Simon & Schuster Canada is reading.

Alexandra, Marketing Assistant: I’ve been completely obsessed with Armando Lucas Correa’s The German Girl these past few days, and I plan to spend my whole weekend finishing this one. It’s a tragic story that follows a young girl and her family as they are forced to leave Nazi-occupied Germany on the St. Louis, a ship meant to provide safe passage to Cuba only to be turned away once it reached the shore. It’s a tragic story that is, unfortunately, based on a true story.

Jordyn, Sales Assistant: I just finished The Woman in Cabin 10, by Ruth Ware. It’s currently out in the UK and coming out in Canada in January 2017. This book is full of tension and mystery, followed by a huge helping of self-doubt. I was so hooked on solving the mystery that I powered through it in three days! I definitely recommend it, though maybe not if you’re about to go on a cruise!

Breanna, Marketing Intern: I just finished reading page turner, Brain on Fire, a memoir written by a 24 year woman living in NYC who mysteriously contracts a neurological disease. This book was a perfect balance of narrative, and scientific jargon, and it made me paranoid enough to WebMD every common discomfort or oncoming cold, believing it was something much more sinister.

Happy Friday, Bookworms! Here’s what the team at Simon & Schuster Canada is reading.

Shannon, Publicity Assistant: I absolutely loved Amy Schumer's The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo. The balance between important issues and laugh-out-loud personal anecdotes won me over. I feel like I know her now.

Siobhan, Publishing Intern: My heart has been breaking bit by bit over the last few weeks as I have been working my way through Hanya Yanagihara’s A Little Life. Read it. You will fall in love with the characters and the depth of their pasts. But be forewarned, you will be forever changed for knowing this story.  Breanna, Marketing Intern: I’m currently savoring the last pages of M.L. Stedman’s The Light Between Oceans. I highly recommend it to the reader who enjoys a love story dashed with a strong dose of “the sad.” The thought of Michael Fassbender portraying a very wounded Tom in the recent film adaptation, which I have yet to see, promises more heartache for me to look forward to.

Happy Friday, Bookworms! Here’s what the team at Simon & Schuster Canada is reading.

Holley, Publicity Assistant: I am currently reading The Wonder by Emma Donoghue. After listening to her speak at the Toronto Public Library a few weeks ago I had to get a copy! It is a beautiful novel that takes place in a 1850s Irish village that is baffled by Anna’s fast.

Jordyn, Sales Operations Assistant:  I just finished The Assassin’s Blade, by Sarah J. Maas. It’s a fantastic collection of short stories about Celaena’s backstory and history with Sam. While it can be read any time throughout the series, I read it after Queen of Shadows so that I wouldn’t power through Empire of Storms and be sad that I have to wait so long for the next book! Alexandra, Marketing Assistant: I have been in serious thriller mode lately -- Amy Stuart, Ruth Ware, you name it, I'm reading it. So of course I had to pick up Iain Reid's I'm Thinking of Ending Things. I've only just started, but I'm already so intrigued by this plot!

Happy Friday, Bookworms! Here’s what the team at Simon & Schuster Canada is reading.

Andrea, Digital Marketing Associate:  I just finished Transferral by Kate Blair; set in an alternate modern-day London where diseases can be transferred from one person to another (and guess what? Only criminals get sick). It’s an interesting premise used to explore deeper themes such as ethics, racism and classism. A fast-paced read you can finish in one sitting. A great debut!

Jacquelynne, Marketing Assistant:  These three GIF’s explain my love/emotions about Empire of Storms. Rowan and Aelin Reading the Book Overall Excitment. Alexandra, Marketing Assistant: I’ve been devouring In a Dark, Dark Wood. It’s the perfect level of creepy for me to read. I’m OBSESSED with this book and I’m stealing every second to read a little more.

Happy Friday, Bookworms! Here’s what the team at Simon & Schuster Canada is reading:

Holley, Publicity Assistant: I was thrilled to see that Aravind Adiga has a new book coming out. I loved his previous novel THE WHITE TIGER! His newest book, SELECTION DAY , is an intriguing story about a family and relationships. Using cricket as a catalyst, we get to observe two young boys grow up in a household that has a strong determination to create the best and second best cricket stars. (On sale January 2017)

Caitlyn, Marketing Assistant: I cannot get enough of JULIET’S ANSWER: One Man’s Search for Love and the Elusive Cure for Heartbreak by Glenn Dixon. This is Glenn’s true story of travelling to Verona, Italy, and working as a scribe of Juliet, trying to help those searching for love. If you enjoyed Eat Pray Love and that fun movie, Letters to Juliet, then you’ll devour this when it comes out in Jan. 2017.

Jordyn, Sales Assistant: This week I’m reading THE HAPPINESS EQUATION by Neil Pasricha. It’s full of actual things you can do to help yourself be happier, and some really interesting mindset changes to help with that. I’ve already started using some of his suggestions, and so far so good!

Happy Friday, Bookworms!

Here’s what the team at Simon & Schuster Canada is currently reading:

Jordyn, Sales Assistant: This week I started Owl and the Japanese Circus by Kristi Charish, mostly because a coworker slid it across my desk in a super subtle way and told me I had to read it. It’s basically Indiana Jane meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with more stealing and sarcasm. I know these books have an intense fan following, and I’m excited to jump on that bandwagon!

Holley, Publicity Assistant: I’ve just finished Ruth Ware’s In a Dark, Dark Wood and LOVED it. The eerie setting is perfect for the dark twists on what was supposed to be a fun hen night. It has made me slightly concerned for the bachelorette I have to attend at the end of the summer!

Shannon, Publicity Assistant: Andi Dorfman’s It’s Not Okay is a must read for all fans of The Bachelor franchise.  I love getting a glimpse into all the behind-the-scenes action.  Lots of juicy gossip.  Pass the popcorn!!

5 Signs You'd Rather Read a Book Than Go Out Tonight

A long weekend equals an extra day of opportunity for friends to lure you out of your dwelling, make you put on clothes that aren’t pajamas, and force you out on the town. To these friends, we summon our inner Meghan Trainor, and straight up say “NO”.

We’ve all been there and we all know there’s about 9 books we’d rather be reading instead. Bustle.com has compiled 5 signs you'd rather read a book than go out tonight:

1. You've Already Accepted That You Like Books More Than People

If you go out, there are people. If you stay in, you can just spend the night with a good book, which, let's face it, is what you really want anyway.

2. You Just Started a New Book

You knew you'd be hooked right away and you started it anyway, and now you can't possibly abandon it like that.

3. You Spend More Time Picking Your Next Read Than Your Next Outfit

It's not intentional. It's just that your To Be Read stack is growing by the week (OK — by the day), and you only have so many outfits for the occasion anyway.

4. You'd End Up Bringing A Book With You Anyway

Because if there's one thing we learned from Rory Gilmore, it was to always have a book with us.

5. You've Been Hunting For A Way Out Since You Agreed To Go

Because if you're being honest with yourself, you already knew your weekend was all...booked.

Happy Long Weekend, Bookworms!

Happy Friday, Bookworms!

Here’s what S&S Canada is currently reading:

Andrew, Marketing and Publicity Intern: I JUST finished Sarah Raughley’s FATE OF FLAMES. SO. GOOD. It’s the kind of book that sucks you in with action right from the get-go and keeps you there with relatable characters and a magical world. You’ll love it if you loved RWBY and Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Catherine, Publicity Manager: I’m midway through Adam Haslett’s sophomore novel, Imagine Me Gone, about one family’s experience with mental illness. So far it is devastating, beautiful, surprising, and utterly captivating, and I will no doubt be found curled up with it (and a big box of tissues) this weekend.

Jordyn, Sales and Operations Assistant: I’m reading The Scorpion Rules by Erin Bow. Any book set in the future AND ruled by a sassy AI is dystopian heaven for me! I can’t wait for the next book to come out this fall!

Holley, Publicity Assistant: I recently finished Jessica Valenti’s memoir Sex Object, a great look into the toll sexism takes on women’s lives expressed through Valenti’s own personal experiences. Her honesty resonated with me in a very powerful way. I highly recommend this book!

Happy Friday, Bookworms!

Here’s what the team at S&S Canada is currently reading:

Catherine, Marketing Assistant: I’m about 60 pages away from finishing Joe Hill’s epic novel, THE FIREMAN.  It’s also my very last day at S&S Canada. This pretty much sums up my feelings about both of those things. :(

Jordyn, Sales Assistant: This week I started OWL AND THE JAPANESE CIRCUS by Kristi Charish. It’s basically Indiana Jane meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with more stealing and sarcasm. I know these books have an intense fan following, and I’m excited to jump on that bandwagon!

Happy Friday! Here’s what the team at Simon & Schuster Canada are reading:

Loretta Eldridge, Marketing Manager: The descriptions in LITTLE HEAVEN by Nick Cutter are visceral, gory, and wonderful. Cutter is a man with a terrifying mind.

Andrea Seto, Digital Marketing Associate: I'm reading PRECIOUS CARGO by Craig Davidson. I've only read Craig's horror fiction (written under the pseudonym Nick Cutter) prior to this, so it's refreshing to read a different genre from him. This touching and honest story about his time as a school bus driver proves Craig knows how to get an emotional reaction out his reader without having to gross them out with tapeworms.

Caitlyn Veiga, Marketing Assistant: I am loving DARKTOWN by Thomas Mullen so far. It’s centered around racial tensions in the Atlanta police force. I can’t help but notice it bears so many similarities to recent racially charged events in society. The only difference is this book is set in the 1940s.

Jacquelynne Lennard, Marketing Assistant: I just finished A COURT OF MIST AND FURY by Sarah J. Maas and this is my emotional stance on it:

Enjoy your weekend, readers!
