Happy Friday, Bookworms! Here’s what the team at Simon & Schuster Canada is reading.

Alexandra, Marketing Assistant: I’ve started Faithful from Alice Hoffman, and it’s the perfect book if you want your heart broken. Hoffman’s writing is poignant and poetic, and I’ve been laughing and crying my way through this unbelievable read.

Jordyn, Sales Operations Assistant: I’m currently reading Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake. I’m a sucker for fantasy books about a trio of sisters each with different kinds of magic (stemming from my childhood love of Tamora Pierce). This one took some settling into, but as the cast of characters grows and Beltane approaches I can tell things are going to get intense!

Breanna, Marketing Intern: I’m currently dipping into James Franco’s short story collection Palo Alto, and I must admit that Franco is a much better writer than he is an actor. I am pleasantly surprised by his ability to evoke a dreamy California haze, and to capture the everyday thoughts of restless  suburban teenagers.

Happy Friday, Bookworms!

Here’s what S&S Canada is currently reading:

Andrew, Marketing and Publicity Intern: I JUST finished Sarah Raughley’s FATE OF FLAMES. SO. GOOD. It’s the kind of book that sucks you in with action right from the get-go and keeps you there with relatable characters and a magical world. You’ll love it if you loved RWBY and Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Catherine, Publicity Manager: I’m midway through Adam Haslett’s sophomore novel, Imagine Me Gone, about one family’s experience with mental illness. So far it is devastating, beautiful, surprising, and utterly captivating, and I will no doubt be found curled up with it (and a big box of tissues) this weekend.

Jordyn, Sales and Operations Assistant: I’m reading The Scorpion Rules by Erin Bow. Any book set in the future AND ruled by a sassy AI is dystopian heaven for me! I can’t wait for the next book to come out this fall!

Holley, Publicity Assistant: I recently finished Jessica Valenti’s memoir Sex Object, a great look into the toll sexism takes on women’s lives expressed through Valenti’s own personal experiences. Her honesty resonated with me in a very powerful way. I highly recommend this book!

Leave the theater wanting more?

We’ve paired up this week’s popular film releases with some similar reads!

These are sure to satisfy your fix long after the credits have rolled:

Similar to Will in Me Before You, Nastya Kashnikov experiences an unspeakable tragedy that leaves her broken inside, unable to let anyone in, that is until she meets Josh Bennett.

X-Men meets Heroes in this story about six Californian teens who have powers that set them apart from the average high schooler. This is the first in a series of action-packed adventure.

These are two sequels kids will go crazy for! Like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Cosmoe and the Galactic Hotdogs crew are back at it again to fight off danger in another space adventure.

Like Connor in Popstar, Jonny Valentine is trying to salvage his plummeting career. This book is a more serious take on the celebrity life gone awry, but both characters have been influenced by real-life celeb Justin Bieber.

Happy Friday, Bookworms!

Here’s what the team at Simon & Schuster Canada is currently reading:

Jacquelynne, Marketing Assistant: Many people have recommended EXIT, PURSUED BY A BEAR by E.K. Johnston to me, and I've finally picked up a copy. It started out as any teen book would, but it quickly turned into so much more. I can't say much without spoiling it, but you're thrown into a mess of emotions and chaos, left devouring page after page. I can see what all the hype is about!

Alex, Editorial Intern: I’m diving into a book that’s been on my list for a very long time now: THE GUNSLINGER by Stephen King. Frankly, it’s a travesty that I haven’t read it sooner.  King’s world is thoroughly depraved, seething with all sorts of awful secrets and downright vile people. But even on this sunny spring afternoon, I can’t think of anywhere else I’d rather be.

Caleigh, Freelance Editorial Assistant: I'm right in the middle of reading THE LOVERS, Rod Nordland's incredible true story of two young people from Afghanistan who, just like Romeo and Juliet, grew up in different feuding families, and fell in love. Unlike the Shakespearean characters, though, they also faced honour killings and intense political scrutiny as they tried to escape the strictures of their culture to be together. And the story's still ongoing! Just yesterday, the two arrived in New York after being granted asylum. I'm captivated.

Caitlyn, Marketing Assistant: I must have been living under a rock because I finally got my hands on Allie Brosh’s HYPERBOLE AND A HALF. Seriously, drop what you’re doing right now and go read it. I have never encountered essays or images that were so relatable to me that they had me scaring people on the subway with my laughter. For example, who doesn’t love cake this much?

Here’s what the team at Simon & Schuster Canada is currently reading:

Sarah, Assistant Managing Editor: Megan Miranda’s All The Missing Girls is a wild roller coaster ride of suspense and intrigue. Did I mention the story’s told backwards? You can’t make a small town, missing girls, and past secrets any more unsettling! If you liked Jessica Knoll’s Luckiest Girl Alive, you’ll love this book.

Brendan, Associate Editor: I cracked open an advance copy of S.J. Kincaid’s The Diabolic four days ago. That means that for the past three nights, I’ve been dreaming about spaceships, intergalactic politics, and zero gravity, so I’m happy.

Adria, Publicity Director: I am currently “auditioning” books (reading the first 30 pages – I’m not the only one who does this, right?!) to see which make the suitcase-cut for my Caribbean vacation. My shortlist includes: All That Man Is by David Szalay, Freedom by Jaycee Dugard, and The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware. The truth is, I think they’re all coming with me (and then some).
