Nasa’s New Horizons spacecraft has made the first visit to Pluto, speeding past at 14km per second. In the released image from Nasa, we can see the “heart” of Pluto and the dwarf planet’s dark equatorial belt. As we wait for more photos from the New Horizons spacecraft, here are some of our favourite non-fiction books on Outer Space and Space Travel.

Go behind the scenes at Nasa with this exclusive and unscripted photographic documentary of the astronauts, engineers, scientists, technicians, and ground crews that contributed in saving the Hubble Space Telescope.

Jeopardy! champion and bestselling author Ken Jennings has created an interactive trivia book that will allow your inner astronaut to explore outer space. With great illustrations, cool trivia, and fun quizzes to test your knowledge, this guide will have you on your way to whiz-kid status in no time!

Did you know that ancient people all over the world looked at the stars and saw constellations? Or that a science fiction author named Jules Verne predicted the first moon landing? Or that astronauts from different countries take turns living on board the International Space Station? Houston, you’re cleared for takeoff and ready to become a History of Fun Stuff Expert on space travel!

The combination of funny, colorful illustrations, and zippy text that links one fact to the next will make young readers forget that these books are also highly educational.

Ride, Sally, ride.

Today marks the 64th birthday of Sally Ride!

Most people know Sally Ride as the first American female astronaut to travel in space. But in her lifetime she was also a nationally ranked tennis player, a physicist who enjoyed reading Shakespeare, a university professor, the founder of a company that helped inspire girls and young women to pursue careers in science and math, and a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. From Sally Ride’s youth to her many groundbreaking achievements in space and beyond, Sue Macy’s riveting biography tells the story of not a only this a pioneering astronaut, but a leader and explorer whose life, as President Barrack Obama said, “demonstrates that the sky is no limit for those who dream of reaching for the stars.”

Sally Ride: Life on a Mission is a NSTA-CBC Outstanding Science Committee 2015 pick for Outstanding Science Trade Books for Students K-12.
