Booklandia: The Comings and Goings in the Land of Literature

(Your Friday News Round Up)

What’s new in the world of books you ask? The publishing industry is always hustling and bustling and we’ve rounded up some of the headlining news from the last two weeks.

In case you were living under a rock, BookExpo America (BEA) took place last week in Chicago, IL. It seems all of Hollywood had a meeting and decided it was the year of celebrity memoirs: Amy Schumer, Bryan Cranston, Carrie Fisher, Anna Kendrick – the list goes on, trust us.

Speaking of Hollywood, some of our favourite books are getting the big screen treatment. Grab some tissues and watch the brand new trailer for The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman. They’re already talking Oscar buzz for Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander. Also recently announced is the adaption of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series. Get a peek at the stunning Idris Elba in costume as The Gunslinger.

The Internet was a buzz this week when Jenny Han announced (very tastefully) that she will be releasing a third installment to her Lara Jean series—Always and Forever, Lara Jean. This will be the final book in the series and a follow up to To All The Boy’s I’ve Loved Before and P.S. I Still Love You. We absolutely adore this series and also that cake.

Have you ever wanted to publish your own book? This week Wattpad announced the launch of Wattpad Studios, a multi-channel network for its platform of over two million creators. They are hoping to partner with the entertainment industry in order to source stories for print, film, television, and digital platforms. This is your chance, writers!

Author Iain Reid, was featured on the Humans of Kingston Facebook page. He talks about his new thriller, I’m Thinking of Ending Things and the reasons he keeps gravitating back to Kingston, from living on a farm to now as a writer.

The author whose books lined our bookshelves growing up, and as adults is officially on Tumblr! Judy Blume will be sharing insights into her writing, images, playlists, and much more.

And now to end our weekly round up, we present you with a gif of Idris Elba fully aware of his magic powers.

‘Till next time, Readers!

"When I first read Forever, I was in the throes of my own first romantic relationship (with a boy named Michael, natch). Like Katherine, I was completely enamored and thought we’d never break up (spoiler alert: we did). Like Katherine, I was simultaneously intrigued and terrified at the prospect of having sex with him (spoiler alert: we didn’t. Unlike Katherine, I just wasn’t emotionally or mentally ready for that step, a conclusion Forever helped me reach). Forever was like the kind older sister who held my hand and walked me through that whole experience. ” —Kristen Scatton, at Bustle

Guess who visited our 42nd Street building on Monday? That’s right, beloved authors Judy Blume and Eric Carle popped by to help us unveil our list of the top 100 children’s books of the last 100 years, which, of course, featured their works — Blume’s Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing and Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar. You can download the list, or pick one up in any NYPL branch. The two legends participated in a panel discussion and read from their works. Carle then signed his new book Friends for over 100 people (that book is not out until November, so NYPL folks got a sneak peek). Blume visited our acclaimed free exhibition The ABC of It: Why Children’s Books Matter (which she dubbed “excellent, excellent” and “amazing” - check out the photos of her looking at her book in the exhibition, and sitting in The Phantom Toll Booth car). She also took a photo in our new NYPL photo booth. So visit us soon, see the exhibition, and take your own photo. Come on, you know you always wanted to be like Judy Blume.

All the childhood book feels right now.

That last picture though.

We did always want to be like Judy Blume. (Once one of our marketing ladies tweeted with her about Kanye West and it was the best. thing. ever.)
