How do athletes balance their ambition and relationships; which comes first? Novelist Chris Cleave explores these questions and more in his latest page-turner, “Gold.” The author stopped by Library HQ on Saturday to discuss the new book, which follows two long-term friends as they battle it out for Olympic gold. Cleave talked about his hands-on research for the book, which included training for a race. He also interviewed cyclists, trying to pinpoint what it felt like to win or lose. After a month of intense 20-hr a week bike sessions, Cleave noted all he felt was “sadness and pain.”
July is jam-packed with author events. Find out who else is coming here.

Echoing the adrenaline-fueled rush of a race around the Velodrome track, Gold is a triumph of superbly paced, heart-in-throat storytelling. With great humanity and glorious prose, Chris Cleave examines the values that lie at the heart of our most intimate relationships, and the choices we make when lives are at stake and everything is on the line.
At my Canadian publisher’s party last night, hand baked cookies with Gold logos individually painted & purple medal ribbons. More than somewhat touched. Had to pretend I had something in my eye.
