Alice Roosevelt, daughter of President Teddy Roosevelt, with her dog Leo, a long-haired Chihuahua. When her father took office in 1901 following the assassination of President William McKinley, she became an instant celebrity and fashion icon at age 17. She was known as a rule-breaker in an era when women were under great pressure to conform.
