On February 19, 1942, in the wake of Pearl Harbor, Executive Order 9066 was signed, which authorized the evacuation of all persons of Japanese ancestry from the West Coast. Consequently 110,000 Japanese people who lived along the Pacific coast of the United States were interned in War Relocation Camps. The Nomura family of Oakland, California avoided this fate by moving to Madison, Wisconsin during the voluntary evacuation period. The girls shown here are the three daughters of Henry Nomura-- Violet, 14, and twins Judy and Gloria, 10. They were photographed by Hikaru Iwasaki outside their new home on September 17, 1944.
