not to give pirates of the caribbean too much credit but it really is the only major franchise Ive seen that was able to pull off the “historical and mythical exist at the same time” with any sort of success
#like how on land theyre in history but on sea theyre in mythology really communicates the wonder and love the #pirates have for the sea so much better than long soliloquies or good cinematography #and then the meta narrative is constantly indicating that the spread of empire and greed for money is driving it away #man……………………………………………………………….. Building on this its so funny how everyone has a globe but the moment the pirates hit the seas they sail off of the end of the (flat) world. its all in the details etc etc
#pirates of the caribbean#PotC#yeah#the first three movies were genuinely great movies it's a great trilogy#with really good writing on many levels the themes and the symbolism etc.#clever build up and character driven storytelling where everyone's motivations made sense and everything evolved etc.#and it really annoys me when some people act like those three movies were just dumb fun adventure movies#like yes they are adventures based on their genre but people seem to say that like it suggest this trilogy had no artistic merit#and that is so completely wrong#or some people even say that only the first one was a fun adventure movie and good but nothing more and the second and third are bad sequels#I think anyone who believes that probably didn't pay attention while watching and just decided in advance that sequel must be bad#in fact the second and third movies have even better meaningful narratives than the first and yet they build on the first so well#personally at worlds end is my fav it's darker in tone than the first 2 but it's also a beautiful movie and it all comes together#they only turned bad starting from the fourth movie from that point on they had a different creative team different writers#frankly they should never have continued it after the third movie and in my mind it will always remain a trilogy#text post#textposts#posts I commented on#tropes
