look I know it’s supposed to be a joke but that “irradiated wasteland” is the unceded homeland of the Paiute and Shoshone peoples and consists of fragile Mojave and Great Basin desert ecosystems that are actively being exploited and destroyed by mining interests who utilize the perception of desert as wasteland to justify their destruction of indigenous lands and communities. the joke's not funny. fuck off with this.
also, as to the "irridiated" part of this - here's an article by High Country News on cancer clusters in indigenous communities in the Southwest resulting from nuclear tests at the Nevada Test Site (itself located on the ancestral homeland of the Western Shoshone and Southern Paiute) and the US government's continuing failure to compensate affected families. it's a horrific crime that the US government committed against its own citizens and the joke's not fucking funny.

"The Western Shoshone tribal nation has faced numerous ongoing assaults against their lands and bodies. Unceded Western Shoshone lands, Newe Sogobia, encompasses 60 million acres spanning from from the Mojave desert in California all the way to southern Idaho through eastern Nevada [1]. The 1840s California gold rush brought large numbers of settlers to Newe Sogobia. Settlers brought violence, federal troops, overgrazing, water scarcity, deforestation, and game depletion. The 1863 Ruby Valley Treaty rightfully acknowledged Western Shoshone ownership of the land. However it permitted non-Natives resource extraction with royalties paid to the Western Shoshone [1] . Unsurprisingly, the United States has failed to uphold this treaty. In the early 1900s federal departments began referring to Newe Sogobia as “public lands” without any legal grounding. In 1979 the US government presented the Western Shoshone with a $26 million settlement for Newe Sogobia. The Western Shoshone rejected the offer.[2] To this day, the Department of Interior has been working to coerce the Western Shoshone into signing.
Despite the fact that Newe Sogobia remains unceded, the US government claims jurisdiction over 80-90 percent of the lands. Western Shoshone have received no royalties despite extensive resource extraction and exploitation of Newe Sogobia. These lands are one of the largest gold-producing areas in the worlds and hold great potential for geothermal energy production [1] . In addition, the Department of Defense has conducted extensive nuclear weapons testing on Newe Sogobia and has long advocated for permanent nuclear waste storage in Yucca Mountain."

The global food economy is massively inefficient. The need for standardized products means tons of edible food are destroyed or left to rot. This is one reason more than one-third of the global food supply is wasted or lost; for the U.S., the figure is closer to one-half. The logic of global trade results in massive quantities of identical products being simultaneously imported and exported—a needless waste of fossil fuels and an enormous addition to greenhouse gas emissions. In a typical year, for example, the U.S. imports more than 400,000 tons of potatoes and 1 million tons of beef while exporting almost the same tonnage. The same is true of many other food commodities and countries. The same logic leads to shipping foods worldwide simply to reduce labor costs for processing. Shrimp harvested off the coast of Scotland, for example, are shipped 6,000 miles to Thailand to be peeled, then shipped 6,000 miles back to the UK to be sold to consumers. The supposed efficiency of monocultural production is based on output per unit of labor, which is maximized by replacing jobs with chemical- and energy-intensive technology. Measured by output per acre, however—a far more relevant metric—smaller-scale farms are typically 8 to 20 times more productive.

The irony of doing deforestation in a land that already has nearly no forests, only to place some giant bird-killing things there in the name of “green energy.” Don’t let me even get started about how much harmful manufacturing processes need to take place to make wind turbines.

Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) confirmed to Full Fact that an estimated 13.9 million trees were felled for wind farms on land that it managed (which is about 10% of Scotland’s land and one third of its forests).
But it also said that over the same period 272 million trees were planted in Scotland by all land managers (not just FLS). This number does not include replanting commercial trees that have been felled, and on average FLS plants 25 million trees per year of this type.
FLS added that, “To date, the amount of woodland removed across Scotland’s national forests and land (managed by FLS) for windfarm development is not even 1 per cent of the total woodland area managed by FLS.”

I know most of tumblr is thinking about the USA right now. but fuck the nz government right now too. tomorrow, the treaty principles bill, the 'worst, most comprehensive breach of Te Tiriti in modern times' is being introduced to parliament early, because there were activations planned country wide and the cowards decided to pull it forwards. fuck this government. a friend of mine had to go home early, crying. I've been in shock all day since it came out.

the treaty principles bill is essentially "redefining" the articles of te tiriti under david seymour's dumbass belief that acknowledging and putting into effect any policy or legislation that does this means that te tiriti is giving māori "special privileges" that no other people in aotearoa have and therefore is racist. so it basically seeks to redefine the two parties within te tiriti from māori and the crown to "all new zealanders" and the crown. effectively this destroys the whole point of te tiriti and would remove any/all protections for māori as tangata whenua* and undermine rangatiratanga** completely. its insidious and disgusting

he had promised to fully deregulate and privatize food safety inspections in his second term. this is to favor massive producers and reduce their costs at the expense of public health and safety. the reason why I make immediate mention of this is because anything that can be construed as “culture war” makes the news and everyone finds out about. these things, however, happen quietly because they aren’t sensational stories for the media to profit off of clicks with. the recent numerous recalls can be tied back to these first term rollbacks, which went over so quietly and discreetly no one demanded reinstatement during the Biden admin.

yeah, screens are a fucking disaster for safety. i think a lot of non-drivers don't realize how much of car safety comes from the fact that you NEVER EVER need to be looking at a component to control it. You are looking at the fucking road. You might glance at a display to see its state, but once you've done that, you manipulate controls by touch without looking at them, because otherwise you are not looking at the fucking road and that is how you get killed.
