Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf

I just watch  Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf  It’s ok film ( even though I’m not the great fan of anime films) but there are some things that I don’t find really great:

Warning! Spoilers!

-  Sorceress who fights more with a bow then magic. Besides she wouldn’t stand a chance with a witcher in this fight-  before she will release an arrow he will kill her

- Fights with monsters are absurd sometimes -way to much powerful are signs that witchers using

- a plot of the film:

Witchers that creates monsters?I find it a little disrespectful to the books. Attack on them was not becouse they create monsters at some point but becouse of people’s prejudices, hatred, and fear - also the mages who took part in attacking Kaer Morhen. Not becouse of one  sorceress who seek revenge on witchers.

This thing that attack them - It,s a mix of Aguara from the Season of the Storms but also some mutated elf with Mara? WTF?  it looks Miss Lauren didn’t   know herself what supposed to this thing should be.

For me it is 6/10 . Not that I expect a lot from Netflix.

Episode: How does Yennefer relate to Geralt? How did you communicate with Henry Cavill as an actor?
AC: Henry is a great actor and a big fan of The Witcher universe. It is a great pleasure to work with an actor who knows so much about the project you are working on and loves this world so much. The relationship between Yennefer and Geralt is quite complicated. It’s literally a love and hate relationship. They are incredibly attracted to each other. Like a magnet. And this feeling never disappears. Yennefer needs Geralt although she doesn’t want to admit that. In fact, Yennefer is a character who wants to be independent in everything she does and thinks she doesn’t need anyone.
Episode: How does Ciri relate to Geralt?
FA: Ciri is a character who misses the concept of family and needs someone’s guidance. She needs someone to be there to protect her. She is also looking for someone who can teach her how to defend herself. Ciri’s and Geralt’s relationship is more than fate. It is about Ciri’s own wishes and choices.

“Asking what I love most about #TheWitcher is like asking me which of my kids I love most. (For the record, I have one who fights for the Resistance and one who is clearly on the Dark Side, and they’re both fascinating). There’s so much that drew me to the work. For instance - I think fantasy, in current tv, lacks a strong female POV. I’ve said it before and will say it again, I’m not looking to inject a strident feminist perspective on the source material. What I want is for female viewers to be able to recognize themselves in this genre they love. So when I read Sapkowski’s books, I was so thrilled. He’s done the heavy lifting for me. These women are strong and troubled and complex and scared and brave and real and sexual and funny and dark as hell. They are every woman I know. Which leads me to the monsters Who are just as complex, because it’s not as simple as good and evil. What happens when good actually creates evil? Nivellen, the Striga, Renfri, the silvan – these are character who have reacted to their circumstances, and isn’t that the most HUMAN experience in the world? And Geralt, who is a rare man of neutrality in this world of dichotomies – who is suddenly presented with the idea of destiny? Primer: destiny is a predetermined course of action, SHAPED BY INDIVIDUAL CHOICE. So where does that leave him? How does he stay a beacon of stability? This is the best way to summarize it: I’ve read the books, I’ve listened to the books, I’ve played the games, I’ve watched others play the games, I’ve read reddits and fan sites and the whole internet backwards and forwards, I’ve immersed myself fully and completely, and I STILL don’t know sometimes what Geralt or Ciri or Yen or whomever should do, or feel, or think in a given situation. I change my mind. I see it from the other perspective. Or more often, I see it both ways. As a writer, this is scary and nerve-racking and THE FREAKING BEST PART Because #TheWitcher isn’t one thing. It’s so many things, to so many people. Me included. That’s what I love about it. (How was that?)”

#so many yennefer vibes i'm gonna die 👀👀👀 who is she

Well let me tell you about my newly discovered dream cast for Yennefer

The actress is (I wear combat boots to interviews) Janet Montgomery.

She did an outstanding job playing a Witch on a show called Salem who in a lot of ways resembles Yennefer in both her ruthlessness and intense love for a certain fella. Not too mention appearance…Triangular face, pale, dark eyes, slightly long nose, oh duh, the hair too….I mean is this not Yennefer coming from her bedroom quietly angered that she was awoken before noon?

UM.

Did I mention she’s a morally ambiguous bad bitch witch in this show and it’s awesome.

Interview with Tomasz Bagiński

I decide to translate it all.

It was supposed to be a movie, it would be a serial. Why?

T.B.: History has grown. In the meantime - and on the Witcher project I'm working four years now - cultural switch has been set. Genre films - apart from the pre-Oscars, when more ambitious production occurs - are increasingly turning into circus shows. It is difficult to think of the "Witcher" as a colorful, thoughtless brawl. So we felt that such deep literature as Andrzej Sapkowski's prose gather  wind in sails  first and foremost on television, multi-episode narrative. Where will not be limited even by the length of the season, because after all, and the number of seasons can be arbitrary, is subject to what dictates the story.

How faithful will you stay to the  books?

T.B.: We will try to rely mainly on the literature of Andrzej Sapkowski, because it is a multi-layered prose. On top of that we actually have a fantasy story full of monsters and action. But when we read deeper, we reach the next layers, up to the level of archetypes, philosophy almost. The unique feature of this series - the world, heroes, Andrzej's entire writing - is that it can be received on so many levels.

This is an event in Polish literature?

T.B.:  It is no big surprise that Sapkowski and his Witcher have become so popular and iconic, not only in Poland but also abroad. It is also no coincidence that this book has become a great basis for a brilliant game that has been a business success. In Polish culture this is a rarity. Polish fantasy literature is a high test, but the character's creation is often limp and the screen is fed primarily by characters. Those whose fate we want to follow with whom we want to stay, which also differ from each other, because after all in Sapkowski every one on this characters  speaks differently, has its own tics, behavior.

What is it in Geralt itself that it is worth making him a serial hero?

T.B: Geralt of Rivia is a moral compass of the world, in which there is no clear division between good and evil, and that is the reality around us. Even in the Cold War, the division was as clear as in "Star Wars" - the empire of evil and noble rebellion. It was known to which groups you should belong.. Today, even the last part of "Star Wars" introduces nuances: rebels are nasty types and they need redemption, and the empire seems to has it’s own rights.  The Witcher is an example of a hero who, in this world of mad, competing ideas, none of which is clearly good or bad - is trying to find the right path. He says: such things you cannot do, such things need to be done, and such choices are necessary. A bit like a guy who will defend the weaker who is beating up in trolley. Archetypal defender. And it is thanks to it there is  something fantastic in him - such characters we want and need.

You say that thanks to it in  Sapkowski there  is something basic Polish. Why?

T.B: Becouse Sapkowski from the beginning described the world from the perspective of Poland, which was always in interface, developed in the clash of East and West. In Poland - contrary to what we are used to say - we are not tribes, you can not qualify us to one particular camp. Even if we start to hold up to something, it soon starts to pinch us - we already have a libertine nature, we are non-controllable. Geralt is similar.

Does the world of the series need clear divisions? Good knights, evil dragons, heroes whom we would like  without hesitation and those we hate from the first meeting?

T.B: If you are watching modern series, you see that this division is long gone - their structure is much more complex, and there is more intelligent psychology out there. The best characters today are those who have good intentions. Another thing is what comes out of this intentions.

Wait a second what about a "Game of  Thrones"? Is it not it that we know from the beginning which of the Westeros kingdoms are "good" and which are causing us aversion?

T.B: You might be surprised. If I had to interview the audience thoroughly, I am sure that there would be people who understand Cersei, her difficult choices and why she is so cruel. And those who would argue that this entire Ned Stark bunch is an overly sensitive sociopaths who is overly afraid that some sort of winter is coming. People are different - and in modern entertainment the most interesting thing is that it is try to tell the difference.

After the speculation about the actors, you joked that Tomasz Karolak could play the role of kikimore. What about the main actor idea? Which stories will you use,  which you will give up?

T.B: I apologize to our viewers and readers for being such a sphinx guarding the mystery - I know the fans would like to know right now more about our casting ideas, what stories  we want to adapt - but many of these things could influence the later process,  many of them are also tade secret . For all of this time will come.

And how - as far as it can be betrayed - look  the process of working on such a complicated plot that must be "The Witcher"?

T.B: I can not say anything but what is general know. Working on the show, more than the film is a teamwork, also at the stage of creation. Stories are written by many scriptwriters, episodes are directed by a number of directors, everything is consulted with the producers and department heads. Big human machine

You cannot reveal who among the full-blooded heroes of Sapkowski will appear on the show. What about  characters beside Geralt are for you, Tomek Bagiński are the key, the most interesting?

T.B: From all stories or novels I prefer specific moments. And what kind of characters I like, will not be particularly controversial. There are such heroes, without  it is difficult to imagine this story: Ciri, Yennefer or supporting characters: Bonhart, Vilgefortza or Regis. How exactly it will be in the series and what characters appear - here please be patient.

Dragon,  Baba Jaga, Twardowsky - in your work there is recently a whole lot of Slavic legends and clues. Where does it come from?

T.B: I will not tell stories from the plains of Arizona or country music biography, because I do not know anything about them. I was born here, here I live and this is my cultural background. It is not a burden, but a tool that can be used - it is extremely interesting and exotic for the rest of the world. Just as Peter Jackson sits in New Zealand and makes films there, using everything he sees around him, so we can use this great European plain like Poland. I really really strongly believe that at this point in the East and West we have built a strong cultural identity, although our archetypes we do not used for years, we considered them as dump. This Pole is untouchable - it is our greatest strength.

How much do you think the CD Projekt and its "Witcher" contributed to the promulgate of Slavs?

T.B: The CDP guys did a great job with this adaptation, so no one will take that from them.. It was a great game and it was a success. The more such companies and people who are so professionally and reliably approaching their work, the sooner Poland will develop. Games also did not undermine the characters and literacy of Andrzej Sapkowski, although it is true that the policy of some publishers harmed the reputation of the writer himself.

He sometimes talked about the game without much flattering.

T.B: It is worth reading these statements with understanding and in a specific context. These statements are much less controversial than what the media around them has unleashed. There is no easy correlation between games and books between books and series or movies. For example, few people suspect that a book was written after a movie. In the case of games the relationship is less obvious, and books written for games are often very literary second league. The publisher's policy  to add to the books covers from the "The Witcher" games automatic add them to that category and right now it’s necessary to correct that.   That does not change the fact that games were extremely popular and in some markets increased the recognition of the Witcher brand.

Is your experience and cooperation with Netflix a guarantee that everything will go well with the series?

T.B: In life, only taxes and death are guaranteed. But even the latter may soon change

And the biggest risk you can imagine in relation to this production?

T.B: Media! Because they are taking up the time we could devote to work. ( laugh ). You will be able to write that "Baginski chased journalists, told them nothing. He is a boor and a beet, worse than the infamous writer Andrzej S. " And there will be another Witcher controversy. People will read. that.

What are your thoughts regarding Andrzej Sapkowski's input on the Witcher games versus his published works (good, bad, and ugly as that input can be picked up as), in addition to news that he will be working directly with the people bringing us the Netflix series?

Avatar

Okay, here we go.

The games are great by themselves, but I don’t think they properly interpret Sapkowski’s work. I’ve heard him say both good and bad things about the games, but I overall think that he has a distinguished distaste for the games, and for a good reasons. It’s his baby essentially, and it’s his world and characters. They messed up a few things in the games (not to mention the first Witcher game is disaster, I personally think)

So I’m really happy that he’s going to be such a big part of the Netflix show and I think it’s the only thing that really gives me hope about the show. He’ll definitely fix the things the games didn’t (cough* yen and ciri and no love triangle* cough)

Interview with Sapkowski and Bagiński about their involvement in Netflix series and comparisons to Witcher game, Game of Thrones and old tv series (ENG translation)

translation:  toudi815

-The witcher is today treated as a product, but also our national treasure, probably many people have very high expectations of the planned series. Aren’t you afraid that it will not meet yours and fans expectations. In the end it will be a production made for a profit, so it might lose original atmosphere and simplify or complicate narration?

AS: Everything is possible. Maybe the production will meet the expectations, maybe not. And most likely: will meet for some, and won’t for the others. When, we will see, we will judge the final product. Earlier disputes, deliberations, prophecies, anxieties and existential fears are rather pointless.

  • Will you influence the script and the production? I read that you are involved, but I am interested in its scope. Will you be a screenwriter, co-writer, co-producer? As long as it is not too early to announce such details.

AS: I will be a consultant. It means that I will consult.

  • It Immediately raises associations with Game of Thrones, excellent film production, prose no longer mention. Are not you afraid of comparisons?

AS: When thirty years ago began to publish stories and books about the witcher, I was also asked. In the beginning: are you not afraid of comparisons with Lem? A little later: are not you afraid of comparisons with Tolkien? Still later: Are you afraid of comparisons with Conan? The answer was always the same. No, I’m not afraid. And who wants to compare things incomparable, is a fool. And whom do such senseless associations, is a fool also.

  • What do you think of cooperation with Tomasz Bagiński? He might be a very strong point of this project?

AS: Very strong. It’s hard to find a stronger one. If not for Tomek, there wouldn’t be this project at all.

  • According to the official announcement, you will direct at least one episode in every season of the series. Is this the only contribution of you and Platige Image to this project?

TB: I’d really like to say about that, because I know the answer to this question well. But this is one of the information that I cannot give at the moment. I can only apologize, but not all the questions that will surely intrigue readers, I will not be able to answer. I’m obliged to keep it secret. For now , it is just too early to talk more about production and how exactly we will be involved in this project. I cannot say also when we will shoot, what actors we will have, how many episodes, and how big budgets will be

  • Sure, it’s understandable to us. But Platige Image has already gone up on stock, so there is something to enjoy and hopefully this contribution will be big enough.

TB: [Laughs] I count on the same thing, but let’s also keep in mind that not many Platige Image actions are aviable in official market, so the course leaps are relatively easy to call. It is not a big stock exchange company, stock market trading is also not staggering.

  • Basic question: just in case: do you know how to make a better golden dragon than the one shown in the 2002 “The Hexer” series?

TB: This is a question that I consider to be rhetorical and allow myself to refrain from responding.

  • There are books, there was a serial, there is a game. Spectators will surely put a lot of demands before the new show. Are you not afraid that this requirement, both in Poland and in the world, won’t be meet, as din the case of TVP series? Although - in my opinion - it had a lot of good points , like Grzegorz Ciechowski’s brilliant music or great pictures.

TB: I think it makes no sense to put an equality sign here. These are two completely different productions, arising in other times and conditions. A lot of people are working on this production that we will be doing with Netflix. The people who deal with it are great professionals, world class. I think such concerns are premature, we do not pay attention to it now. Sure, it is a very difficult work, a difficult industry and we want the project to be of very high quality. We’ve done a lot to get that right. This is not a one-man project by Bagiński, as it often appears in our media. This is a big effort of a large group of people, many of whom are more talented than me.

  • But there are also comparisons to two other things. For “The game of thrones,” which is a high-budget HBO production. I will not ask if the new Witcher will have a similar budget and momentum. But it will probably be compared to this show, perhaps it will be overshadowed. In the end those are two fantasy stories of a somewhat similar nature, and climate.

TB: And that is - I think - the only resemblance. And “The Witcher”, and “GOT” are original fantasy novels, and, indeed both are fantastic. But the resemblance ends. Stories are completely different, they touch other values, they talk about them in a different way. The only similarity is that here and here are the knights and swords. And maybe dragons. But in fact these stories differ in almost every way. The story written by Andrzej Sapkowski is much more contemporary, talks much more about our world

What we will do will be significantly different from what the creators of “GOT” did. Outstanding on the show. I think we will easily avoid comparisons. These productions will not even compare. We do not want the “The Witcher” to be either Netflix or Polish “GOT.” The witcher will be the witcher and will have it’s own name and value.

  • They will be also comparisons to the game, which is also visually sophisticated and in some way shaped Geralt’s image, the way he moves, what he speaks and what he is like. Is not that a bigger challenge, since the game has met millions of people? Will not it be too far away from their “game” prototype?

TB: I believe that the game is an outstanding production and to CD Projekt did their job exceptionally. I know many persons from their team and I have a great respect for their work. But novels written by Andrzej Sapkowski give the possibility of other interpretations of the same story. It seems to me that this threat does not exist, and fans will be able to make friends or like a hero who will not be a copy of the characters from the game. Both productions derive from the very literary material created by Andrzej Sapkowski. There will be many similarities, but when it comes to how visuals, we will look for our own path.

  • You have already dealt with the transfer of Polish legends and stories to the screenWill these experiences help you a little bit with the Witcher?

TB: These are completely different projects, but … I never hid and I do not hide that I’m a Pole and that in this culture I grew up. So the Slavic themes in my heart and I will return to them. It is also something very interesting and exotic for an international audience. It seems to me that it can be used as a visual setting just like Vikings culture, samurai or Indian. This is in some way unused, valuable, very interesting visually, musically, climateally part of the world culture, which has so far been a little bit on the side track. And I have the impression that fashion is now on Slavicity and this kind of emotions. It also falls into the larger program that we want to introduce in our studio, related to the notion of culture, which is a conglomerate of different issues where culture, technology, business - and it’s on a large scale. The point is that behind every product, subject, for all that surrounds us, there is a kind of history. And this story is sometimes more important than the product itself. The Polish culture has not always made good use of this potential, which is gigantic. And we have a whole bunch of great creators who are successful all over the world.

It was announced that Netflix will make a TV series based on The Witcher books and most people are missing the point….as in they hope to see events that are game-only on the screen. Since it’s been said clearly that it’s going to be based on the books, I don’t get how people don’t understand that. Sapkowski will be working with the team and I trust him to wield a metaphorical whip each time they will try to screw up with his characters. I hope they take inspiration from what GoT did well, but also learn from GoT’s mistakes. The Witcher books are a lot shorter and the number of characters isn’t as big as those present in ASOIAF which might actually be a very good thing. The main characters are Ciri, Geralt and Yen. What could the show focus on? Obviously the books. There is lots of quality content in them and you are missing out if you don’t wanna read them and just limit yourself to the third game. What we could actually see in the show: Geralt and Dandelion roaming the world and going on adventures, Geralt meeting Yen and the outcome of their interaction with the djin, meeting Borch Three Jackdaws, Geralt fighting the striga, Geralt meeting a pregnant Pavetta and Duny and the events that take place at that feast etc. There’s really a lot of amazing moments that would look great on screen as there are short stories and the saga.

Who will be the actors? Nothing is sure as of now, but Sapkowski said at an event that years ago he would have liked Kevin Costner to play Geralt, but since he is too old now, he also said he would like Mads Mikkelsen. I think the author knows best haha how his characters actually look. If it’s going to be Mads or someone else….since it’s based on the books I expect to see characters looking different from the games. A few examples:

-Geralt has dark eyes (not permanent cat eyes like in the games) and hates having a beard.

-Yen looks very youthful (she has the skin of a 16 year old) and has a mane of curly black hair (not the flat and almost straight hair she has in the games), her face is also distinctive (long nose, receding chin, pronounced cheekbones etc). I see many fans favoring Eva Green….but I think she’s not exactly the right pick since she is not that youthful looking (she’s gorgeous don’t get me wrong). I hope they will keep her striking purple eyes and not go the GOT way of stripping Daenerys of her famous purple eyes. It doesn’t even have to be full on contacts. If they use an actress with light colored eyes they can apply a discrete purple tint in post production in close-up scenes.

-Triss has chestnut hair (not fiery red) and she doesn’t wear plunging necklines due to the scar she has on her chest. She’s also not as prominent in the books as she  is in the games…as in she has very few scenes (I think Dandelion is more prominent than her). There is also no additional romance between her and Geralt since that one time when she used magic to sleep with him. I think this might put some fans off, but the books are the books and that’s how it is in them.

-Ciri-> I’ve seen some fancasting that is hilarious: Margot Robbie and Cara Delevingne. Again…people are missing the point. When Ciri meets Geralt in Brokilon she is 10-11 and at the end of the last book she is a teenager (15-16 years old)…so it’s more likely they will choose a child actor that grows up with every season (similar to what GoT did with the Stark children). Ciri is often described as scrawny so I can’t see how someone like Margot Robbie could play her. Galahad describes Ciri as being a girl, not yet a woman.

This is the news from the production company:

17/05/2017  Polish Author Andrzej Sapkowski’s Fantasy Franchise to be Brought to Life as  English Language Drama Series Netflix is developing and producing a new English language drama series based on The Witcher, the globally popular fantasy saga from Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski, that has entranced legions of fans worldwide. Known collectively as the Witcher Saga, Sapkowski’s eight novels and story collections center on “witchers” – hunters who develop supernatural abilities at a young age to battle deadly monsters. The New York Times bestselling books have spawned a major video game franchise and have been translated into over 20 languages.     “Andrzej Sapkowski has created a rich and memorable world, at once magical and familiar,” said Erik Barmack, Netflix Vice President, international series. “We couldn’t be more excited about bringing Netflix members around the world.”  “I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories, staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over thirty years writing,” said Sapkowski. “I’m excited about our efforts together, as well as the team assembled to shepherd these characters to life.”   Andrzej Sapkowski will serve as a creative consultant on the series. Sean Daniel (The Mummy franchise, Ben-Hur, The Expanse) and Jason Brown (The Expanse), partners at the Sean Daniel Company are executive producers, along with Tomek Baginski (Oscar nominated short The Cathedral, BAFTA winning The Fallen Art, Ambition) and Jarek Sawko (The Fallen Art, Another Day of Life) from Platige Image, the Polish production and visual effects company. Bagiński will also direct at least one episode of each season.   “The Witcher stories follow an unconventional family that comes together to fight for truth in a dangerous world,” said Sean Daniel and Jason Brown. “The characters are original, funny and constantly surprising and we can’t wait to bring them to life at Netflix, the perfect home for innovative storytelling.”   Added Platige Image’s Tomek Baginski and Jarek Sawko: “There is a moral and intellectual depth in these books which goes beyond genre.
