my dog will near-nose touch with the degus and the guinea pigs we had, both while they're out and through the cage bars. she grew up with degus around & has outlived our first pair, and is now protective of our second pair (will bark if someone she doesn't trust enough goes near them, especially if I their caretaker I am not right there with them). On the degu side, the first pair were more indifferent but had no qualms about the dog. the girls now move to front of the cage when dog stops by

Thanks for your input! 😊 I would personally be wary of mixing predator and prey animals, but it sounds like it's working with yours.

Are the rats and degu curious about each other or do they not really give a care? I did some cursory research, and understand for the most part they can't coexist. But do they think about their similar looking neighbor?

The degus and rats live in separate rooms and have no interactions with each other. They're probably aware of each others scents, and sometimes hear some squeaking, but seem unbothered by this. I've not had many positive experiences with introducing degus to other degus (they're tiny but vicious), so I wouldn't even try to mix species. It depends on exactly what you mean by coexist, but keeping them in the same cage wouldn't be possible as they have different dietary requirements. Degus are diurnal, while rats are nocturnal, so I would expect them to disrupt each others sleep to an extent, even if they seem to largely sleep in shorter naps. I don't think they have any particular opinions on their similar looking neighbours, but they're also not within range to have much of an opinion.

I know some people here have many different species in the same room, if anyone fancies sharing their input 😊

We have degus and dogs. The dogs mostly ignore the degus, unless they’re making a stink. One set of degus has trained our Boston terrier. They squeak, she barks and runs to the door, degus are protected from intruders.

One of our degus lives alone in her cage but in eye and ear sight of the rest (yes I’m aware. There’s good reason for this). She’s tries to 1v1 either dog whenever they’re near her cage. They give her a lot of space. I believe in the rage of our tiny Combat Wombat and I think she could take the dogs, not that we’d ever give her a chance.
