I'm thinking about how stage direction would fit into a dsmp stage play and I think the dsmp has more than enough freedom to "break free" from the stage, meaning that the cast could use the entire theater to tell their story. I don't think doomsday could work if the cast was only allowed on the stage. imagine techno on the stage, he's center. he barely moves throughout the event. dream and phil are in the mezzanine, similar to how they were on the obsidian grid during doomsday. tommy and tubbo are running through the house, flying past audience members in confusion. ghostbur later walks down the center aisle, through the house. phil is now center stage, his ghost son below him. and ghostbur refuses to join phil on stage because he feels more connected to those who were running chaotically through the house earlier. god it would be so good

eret leads the l’manberg army to the button room through the centre aisle of the house, mirroring the long hallway they went through to get there, the opposing sides bursting from the wings when the button is pushed on stage. jack climbing out of the pit when he comes back to life after having fallen into lava. tommy shouting up to dream on the balcony during the final disc confrontation. the catwalk being used as part of pogtopias set design, giving the impression of how narrow and cavernous it was. tommy walking the “prime path” through the audience, really making them feel part of the play

the dsmp as a stage play would be like- tommy looking tiny standing alone at center stage, but when wilbur is there his words and gestures and pacing takes up so much space. the blocking is always overlapping, especially when a lot of characters are in a scene, but techno always faces the audience, and he grins at us and smiles, holding his fingers to his lips. as wilbur’s monologues turn to soliloquies, and eventually everything he says is in some way begging the audience for help, tommy asks who he’s talking to. he has no answer. it’s tommy gasping for breath, littering the stage with his blood as he teeters around, wilbur rushing to his side, dream demanding mellohi while wilbur’s pulls the arrow from tommy’s chest. the stage lights go up, the stage lights go down, the microphone schlatt uses for speeches is too loud and full of feedback, tubbos shrieks from inside the box, niki and jack disappearing into the audience. an empty stage save for wilbur’s body surrounded by rubble.

okay SO we're talking dsmp as a play and I have literally been thinking about this for the best part of two years here's a thing. characters breaking the 4th wall, there are only four (during s1):

1. Dream. puppeteer-style popping in and out to change the story/make it more exciting for the audience because he's in control, he's the one who brought them here, say. doesn't directly interact with them but acknowledges them, a nod here, a wink there.

2. Techno. outright asides in the middle of dialogues scenes, never looks to the audience on the punchline but you know it's a joke for them. LOTS of soliloquies - his speech in the bunker post-manberg festival where he talks about the rocket launcher springs to mind.

3. Tommy. isn't actually aware there's an audience, mostly doing it for the bit (picked it up from Wilbur + Techno), but makes a disproportionate amount of 4th wall breaking jokes.

4. Wilbur. at the beginning of the play he is completely unaware of the audience, but as he starts to spiral he begins to see them more and more, performing to them in a way that makes sense to us but seems unnatural to the other characters. the whole 'chekhov's gun' thing is him aware that we are waiting for that outcome, in button rooms scenes he's constantly looking back for our approval. (also during his spiral you'd start to hear train sounds in his worse scenes but that's part of another post.)

anyway it is so cool we're talking about this I finally get to share my nerdery
